6412 Ernest "Bud" Addison Vincent, 75, formerly of Gordon, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the Carlton Nursing Home in Carlton, Minn. He was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Gordon to Ernest and Alma (Wold) Vincent. He graduated from Gordon High School, attended Superior State College for one year and attended Carroll College in Waukesha for two years. Mr. Vincent served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters during World War II. After his discharge in 1946 he moved to St. Paul where he worked for Webb Publishing Company until his retirement. He was a member of Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post No. 499 in Gordon and the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors include two sisters, Sue Bergin, Cloquet, Minn., and Olene (John) Holt, Duluth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Shirley Lannin, four half-brothers, Emory, Eugene, Gerald and Robert Vincent; and two half-sisters, Grace Johnson and Nellie (Lawler) Johnson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, with Rev. David Heyser, pastor of Presbyterian Pioneer Parish, officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post No. 499 of Gordon. Casket bearers will be Jon and Tim Bergin, John, Mark and Paul Holt and Harry Smith. Arrangements are being handled by the Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs.

6413 Ernest Engstrum, 82, of Rt. 2, a Wenatchee resident for the past 10 years, died in a local hospital early Monday following a brief illness. Born in Detroit Lakes, Minn., May 12, 1885, he moved to Moscow, Idaho when a young many. He married Winifred Daniels there June 23, 1915. He served as a maintenance carpenter at the University of Idaho for many years prior to his retirement. In May of 1956, Mr. and Mrs. Engstrum came to Wenatchee to be near their daughter here. Mrs. Engstrum preceded him in death Dec. 23, 1957. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Bill Dennis, Wenatchee, and Mrs. Ray Campbell, Genesee, Idaho; a sister, Mrs. Anna Jameson, Everett; and one granddaughter. ENGSTRUM, Ernest (I37516)
 
6414 Ernest James (E.J.) Schmidt, 92, of Omak, Wash, went home to be with our Lord Feb. 2, 2019. He was born in Gackle, N.D.  April 19, 1926 to Theodore and Emilia Schmidt, the sixth of eleven kids.

He arrived in Omak in a caravan of three car loads of family in 1942 on his sixteenth birthday, looking for work opportunities. The weather was so mild they believed they had arrived to the “banana belt”.  E.J. was proud to be the first to get a job in the Copple Orchard.  He graduated from Omak High School class of 1944. He attended two years of college at Eastern Washington College where he served as freshman class president and was manager of the 1945-46 EWC Hall of Fame basketball team.

E.J. married Mary Lou Sprowl, Sept. 4, 1948 and raised four children. His career in grocery began in North Dakota with the family store and continued by purchasing East Side Market from his brother Gordon, later E.J.’s Food Center in Omak and working for Shop and Save, Trading Post, Yoke’s, and lastly Okanogan Food Depot. His career as an orchardist began in 1959 when the family moved to their home and pear orchard on the Conconully Hwy.  The whole family worked together to plant more trees and grow beautiful pears.  They expanded with 20 acres of apples, eventually selling to son Mark and retiring to enjoy warm winters with golf and family in Arizona.

Dad was a kind, generous, and compassionate man who treated others as he would want to be treated.  He loved to give people endearing nicknames like “pard” or “kid”.  He was a member of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship and Okanogan Valley Golf Course.

E.J. enjoyed hunting birds with his brothers and sons and sports of all kinds.  He was an avid golfer, two time club champion and won many bowling trophies. Stop everything to watch the Zags or the Seahawks!  In early days, E.J. acquired a love for camping beginning with the Harriman family at Crawfish Lake.  Camping with grandchildren at Bonaparte was an annual event.  Dad loved family and was proud of his grandchildren; always eager to see what they would accomplish next.

E.J.  is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Jeff) Demmitt; sons, Chris (Tina) Schmidt, and Keith (Heidi) Schmidt, all of Omak area; and daughter-in-law, Patti (Steve) Cockfield, Malott, Wash.; six grandchildren, Eric Schmidt, of Bridgeport, Wash., Andrew (Alyssa) Schmidt of Savannah, Ga., Karl Schmidt of Riverside, Calif., Melissa (Yaron) Stern-Avni of Israel, Justin (Debbie) Demmitt of Omak, and Michele (Levi) Johnson of Spokane. Wash.; 3 great-grandsons, Owen Demmitt, Charlie Schmidt and Sa’ar Avni; brothers, Eloyen (Peggy) Schmidt of Puyallup, Wash., and Marlo (Judy) Schmidt of Mukilteo, Wash.; sister-in-law, Ruth Piper of Dryden, Wash.; brother-in-law, Darrell Carlton of Omak; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Pat and Cliff Klimek; and Mildred Buttrum.

E.J. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Lou; son, Mark; infant twins, Kirk and Alan; brothers, Donavan, Gordon, DeLyle, and Myron; and sisters Viona, Adella, Virginia, and Phyllis.

6415 Ernest Ordell Thompson, 90 of Emmons, Minnesota, died peacefully at the Lake Mills Care Center on Monday, February 25, 2013, surrounded by his children. He had turned 90 years old just three days prior to his death.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin and Pastor Bill Peters officiating.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, March 1, 2013, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ernest will be cremated after the service and inurnment will take place at Silver Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Ernest Ordell Thompson was born February 22, 1923, on the east side of State Line Lake, rural Freeborn County, the first born child of Selmer and Mabel (Larson) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church. He attended rural country school until the death of his father in 1940 when he stayed home to help his mother on the farm. He married Dorothy Jean DeVries on June 7, 1953, at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minnesota. They were married 42 years until her death in August 1995. He was employed for many years at the Albert Lea Coop Creamery and later by Mid-America Dairyman as a milk truck driver. He was also a mail carrier for a time in Mankato, Minnesota.

He loved going “Up North” fishing with his children and grandchildren and in 2012 celebrated the 51st Annual Thompson Family Fishing Trip. He spent many years “going to the farm” to help his brother Si farm. He attended the Britt Draft Horse show and could pick the winner most every time. Ernie loved his flowers, creating his “flower tree” every year, and he loved decorating for Christmas. His outdoor lights won several local awards and a spot on television. At one time he had over 15,000 lights displayed. He was a master at lefsa making, enjoyed eating lutefisk every Christmas, and watching his birds in the backyard while having coffee with his neighbors, Tom and Kathy.



Ernie is survived by his four children: Debra (William) Georgia, Lake Mills; Barbara Thompson, Lake Mills; Donald Thompson, rural Northwood; and Victoria Zobel, Lake Mills; his eight grandchildren: Brandon (Blair) Zobel, Omaha, NE; April Zobel, Kansas City, MO; Nolan Zobel, Ankeny, IA; Holly (Toby) Reynolds, Tishomingo, OK; Kim (Andre) Vargas, Tacoma, WA; Eric (Julie) Georgia, Tacoma, WA; Eli Georgia (Anna), Northwood, IA; and Emily Georgia, Miami, FL; his 13 great-grandchildren: Tricia Melton, Michael Baldwin, William Baldwin, Grace Reynolds, Elisabeth Reynolds, Max Reynolds, Andrew Vargas, Zachary Vargas, Mariah Vargas, Celina Georgia, Kendra Georgia, Annabel Georgia, and Erica Georgia. He is survived by his sister Helen (Robert) Edwin, three sisters-in-law, Beulah Thompson, Ardyce DeVries, Phyllis DeVries and his friend Rose Henderson. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents Selmer and Mabel Thompson, his wife, Dorothy, his brother, Lauritz Thompson and his wife Betty, his sister, Mavis Nordaas and her husband, Haakon, his brother Siram, his brother-in-law, Darold DeVries, sister-in-law, Ruth Dagner, and his son-in-law, Douglas Zobel.

He will be greatly missed.

6416 Ernest was institutionalized. The information on his draft registration of Sept, 1918, as Ernest Mousso, was provided by the St. Peter State Hospital. There was no signature by the applicant and no birth date provided. He is described as stout and of medium height with dark brown eyes and black hair. His nearest relative is his mother, Mrs. Harriet Mousso, 915 2nd Street N.E., Minneapolis.

His death certificate shows that he had been at the St. Peter State Hospital for 48 years and 3 months which means that he was committed in January of 1906 when he would have been 26 years old. Ernest never married. He died from heart disease.
