East Portland resident Donald Eugene Engel died Monday, March 28, at his home. He was 84.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 5, at Central Christian Church in Portland. Interment was at Alsea Cemetery in Alsea.

Donald was born March 20, 1927, in Oakland, Calif., to Arnold and Marcia Engel. He was raised in Albany and served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946.

On May 28, 1948, he married Lula Oldre. She preceded him in death in 2006. Donald married Elaine Grove on April 26, 2008, in Crabtree.

Donald worked as a farm co-op manager in Salem and Albany and as a rancher in Alsea. He retired from Philomath Forest Products in 1992. He moved to Portland in 2008.

Donald attended Immanuel and Good Shepherd Lutheran churches in Albany and Central Christian Church in Portland. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping. He was a volunteer firefighter in Alsea. Family was very important to him.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Sprague; and brother, Garth Engel.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Eileen Fligg of Wood Village and Karen Halliwell of Crabtree; son, Darrell Engel of Gresham; brothers, Bruce Engel of British Columbia, Canada, and Martin Engel of Canby; sister, Martha Cutler of Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
