One of their children apparently named Gordon (b. 1 Jul 1962). Other children may be Leah (b. 1963) and Wayne P (b. 24 Aug 1959). He attended Andover Academy, Andover, Massachusetts.
He registered for the draft as Hazen Curtis Pratt on May 31, 1917, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge where he was a student. He was single. He claimed to have had previous military service with a “Naval Marine Force.” He was tall and of medium build with blue-grey eyes and brown hair.
He enlisted as a Seaman, 2nd Class, in the Naval Reserve and was commissioned as an Ensign on March 9, 1918. He was a junior officer in the Naval Reserve, and later in the U.S. Marine Corps, from at least June of 1918 through the end of the war. (He was made Lt. J.G. on August 27, 1918.) He was stationed at Miami with the Marine Aviation Detachment. According to his gravestone, he was a 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves during World War I.
His 1922 thesis for his B.S. at MIT was entitled “The design of pneumatic cylinder brake for an aircraft arresting gear.”
He and his wife Jean arrived in New York on June 8, 1925, aboard the S.S. Fort Victoria which had sailed from Bermuda two days earlier. At that time, the couple lived in Rochester, New York, at 189 Lake Avenue. (This may have been their honeymoon.)
In the 1930 census, he and his family lived in Rochester, New York, at 233 Sherbourne Road. He was a mechanical engineer for the Rochester Bureau of Municipal Research. They owned their house, worth $20,000, and they had an Irish woman, age 20, as a servant.
The California Passenger Lists show Hazen, Jean, Hugh, and Elizabeth arriving in San Francisco aboard the S.S. President Polk on 17 Jul 1934. The ship had sailed from New York on June 28th. The family lived in Rochester, New York, on 233 San Gabriel Drive.
He was living at the Curtis Hotel at the time he got his marriage license for marrying Mildred in 1941.
According to Millie Pratt Giddings’s obit, “Hazen Curtis Pratt {was} a founding member of the former Nob Hill Ski Club in Minneapolis. Hazen was a talented engineer trained at MIT, and the principal original designer of the Hoffman electrical enclosures still manufactured in Anoka.”
At the time his second son was born, he and Mildred were living at 5849 Emerson in south Minneapolis.
At the time his third son was born, he and Mildred were living at 7027 Newton Avenue S.
