Bruce Spillum, age 60, of Huron, South Dakota, died Sunday, September 11, 2005, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Bruce Dennis Spillum was born August 18, 1945, in Grand Forks, to Walter and Barbara (Nesvig) Spillum. He grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. He earned both his bachelor's degree and master's degree in Education from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Bruce was married to Jackie Thomforde in Grand Forks on June 11, 1966. He taught music in Wood Lake, Minnesota from 1965 until 1969, followed by ten years teaching music at Preston, Minnesota. In 1979, he and his family moved to Huron where Bruce taught elementary music for seven years. In 1986, he began teaching middle school English, which he taught until he retired in 2000. He was honored as the 1998-1999 Huron Middle School ""Teacher of the Year'. Bruce was a member of Riverview United Methodist Church where he was the choir director for many years. He was a member of the Huron Masonic Lodge #26 and El Riad Shrine Temple. Bruce was very active in musical activities in the community, including the Huron City Band, the Huron Symphony and various other groups. He was also a current board member of the Huron Symphony League.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jackie, of Huron; three daughters, Stephanie (DaNiel) Wood of Sioux Falls, SD, Heidi (Sergio) Vazquez of Highland, Calif., and Wendy (Shane) Talbott of Queen Creek, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Caden and Devin Wood, Matthew Gussiaas and Isabela Vazquez, and Kylie Talbott; his mother, Barbara Spillum of Pollock Pines, Calif.; his sister, Ida (John) Brady, also of Pollock Pines; many extended family members; and his special friends with whom he enjoyed playing cards and spending time. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter.
His memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 14th at the Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron, followed by Masonic rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., Tuesday at the Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Holt International Adoption Agency, Riverview United Methodist Church music fund, or the Shrine Children's Hospital. | SPILLUM, Bruce Dennis (I22420)
