Both parents born in Canada.
Shown as age 12 in the 1870 census.
In the 1895 state census, he is called Alfred Fortier. He and his wife and his wife’s two youngest brothers live in Minneapolis. He is an engineer.
In the 1900 census, Henry, Lila, and Lila’s brothers are living next to each other on, apparently, the corner of 24th Ave. N.E., and Central Ave. E. in Minneapolis. Walter and George Ripley are living with the Fortiers. Edward and his wife live next door. Henry Fortier is a stationary engineer.
In the 1905 state census, Henry and family live at 2918 28th Avenue S. in Minneapolis. The household consists of Henry A., 49, Lila M., 36, Howard F., 2, and Anna Fortier, a 72 year-old widow who had been in Minneapolis for 6 months. Henry and his mother were born in Canada, as were their parents. Lila was born in Minnesota but her father was born in Maine and her mother in the West Indies. Henry is a steam fitter, Lila is a housekeeper. Henry has been in Minnesota for 40 years and his mother for 6 months. Henry and his family have lived at their current location for a year and a month.
In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he is Henry A Fortier, an engineer living at 506 East 18th Street.
In the 1910 census, Henry, Lila M., and Howard F. were living in a rented apartment at 1715 Fifth (doesn’t say whether it’s Ave. or St.) in Minneapolis. Henry is reported to have emigrated in 1860. Living with the family as a boarder is a single woman, 18 year-old Marguerite Buss, a magazine stenographer.
The Minnesota Deaths and Burials database as FamilySearch pilot gives the death of Henry “Forties” as 3 April 1921 in Minneapolis and his wife’s name as Lila Ripley. The MHS death index agrees. The 1921 death date would be inconsistent with the indication in the 1920 census that Lila was already a widow.
His death certificate shows him as the husband of Lila Ripley and his address as 1114 14th Avenue S in Minneapolis. He was a stationary engineer and he died at Minneapolis General Hospital which was the informant for his death certificate. (The death certificate shows his place of death as “Hopewell Hospital.”) He died from bronchopneumonia following asthma and emphysema. | FORTIER, Henry Alfred (I283)

An Ella Nordrum was listed in the 1895 state census as living in LaCrosse as female, born in the U.S. No other Nordrums are listed in LaCrosse. She seems to be living with Antona Hanson but that isn’t clear: it’s simply the name that comes before hers in the census listing.
Apparently caught twice in the 1900 census. Once as a lodger at 222 King Street and once as a servant for the John Rowles family at 214 North 6th Street.
In the 1901-1902 La Crosse city directory she is Miss Ella Nordrum, domestic, 415 S 5th.
Shown as Ella C. in the 1910 census.
In the 1940 census, she was a 56 year-old widow living with her daughter Marion and her family. Ella had a sixth-grade education.
Of Duluth at the time of her daughter Marion’s death.
Died as Ella Christine. According to her obituary in the Duluth newspaper, she died at home at 306 Worth Street in Duluth. (Her death certificate says she died at 4:40 PM at the Chris Jensen Home in Duluth.) She had been a Duluth resident for 80 years. No mention is made in her obituary of her husband. She had 21 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
Her cause of death was cancer of the uterus.
Her last name inferred from the death certificates of Gertrude and Marion. Confirmed by the La Crosse birth record. Ella was delivered by a Mrs. Mary Olson, presumably a midwife.
Appears from IGI to have had a brother Arthur born May 9, 1887, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This seems unlikely. | NORDRUM, Ella Kristine (I1305)

Both parents born in Norway.
Veteran of the first World War.
Sergeant, U.S. Army in WWI.
Registered for the WWI draft on May 26, 1917, Griggs County, North Dakota. (The registrar was the County Auditor of Griggs County and the draft card was then apparently forwarded to the officials in Lakeville.) At that time, although he listed his “home address” as Route 2, Lakeville, he was apparently living in Griggs County, North Dakota, as a parochial school teacher for the West Prairie and Norway Congregation. He was single and was described as tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and black hair. He was also described as “not disabled” but was “farsighted, has astigmatism, wears glasses.”
In the 1920 census, he lived with his sister Mina Brom and her husband in Minneapolis. He had no occupation.
The family name was shown erroneously as “Solberg” in the 1930 census. | SOBERG, Palmer Olaf (I418)
