In the 1910 census (April 23rd), Oscar Karlsrud, single, age 20, was a hired man on a farm in Hartland Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. (He is listed on the same census page as his brother Jørgen (George).) He had emigrated from Norway in 1909 and was still an alien at the time of the census.
Oscar registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. He indicated that he was living in Trenton, Pierce County, Wisconsin, and was married with 3 children. He had declared his intention to become a citizen but was not yet a citizen of the U.S. and claimed to be a citizen of Norway. He claimed to have been born in Gran, Hadeland, Norway. He is described as 27 years old, of medium build, medium height, blue eyes and light brown hair.
In the 1920 census (Jan 2 and 3), Oscar Karlsrud, age 30, was living in a rented home in Trenton Township of Pierce County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Oscar, Julia, age 31, Gilbert, age 6, Raymond, age 4, and Alden, age 2. Oscar’s citizenship status is listed as “Pa” and Julia’s as “Al.” Oscar was a section hand on the railroad.
In the 1930 census (April 28th), Oscar Karlsrud, 40, was living with his family in Eureka Township, Polk County, Wisconsin. The family consisted of Oscar, Julia, 41, Gilbert H., 16, Oscar R., 14, Henry A., 13, and Irene E., 7. The three boys were born in Wisconsin, Irene was born in Minnesota. Oscar came to this country in 1909, Julia in 1911. Oscar is a dairy farmer and Gilbert is a farm laborer. Oscar was 22 when he married 23-year-old Julia.
In the 1940 census (indexed as Karlasude), he was a farmer in Eureka Twp, Polk County. He had an 8th grade education and had made $1000 the previous year. Gilbert and Raymond still lived at home.
