The St. Albans border crossing records show her as Magnhild Carlson, crossing the border and entering the U.S. at Sault Ste. Marie on August 12, 1914, arriving from Halifax, N.S., where she had debarked from the Mauretania on August 7th. She was headed for Clinton, Minnesota, where she would meet her brother Mads Karlsen, the person who had paid for her passage. Her father was Johan Karlsen of Hegholt, Buaren, Norway. She was 28 years old and was born in Bliaren, Norway. She had never been in the U.S. and was moving to the U.S. permanently. Her occupation is domestic and she is shown as married. She can read and write. She was 5 ft., 6 inches tall.
The Mauretania’s ship’s manifest agrees with the St. Albans record but has her age as 18 and says that her father lives in Hegholt, Bliaren. The Mauretania had sailed from Liverpool on August 1, 1914.
Her marriage certificate for her marriage to Orvis says that she was the daughter of John Carlson, no mother’s name shown. The witnesses to her marriage to Orvis were Mary Peterson and Maten Carlson (perhaps her brother Mads). She was 20 years, 9 months, and 19 days of age at the time the marriage license for her marriage to Orvis was issued. That day was 3 Apr 1917. Orvis’s age was said to be 23 years, 9 months, and 21 days. That would imply that Orvis’s birth date was 13 June 1893 and that Magnhild’s birth date was 15 Jun 1896.
Her obit was in the Great Falls Tribune’s 18 Sep 1980 edition. She came to the U.S. in 1914 and married Earl L Orvis in 1916. After he died in 1935, she married Joe Zagotta in 1941. She had a daughter Jona (Mrs. Bill) Munyon of Lewistown, Montana.
In the 1940 census, she and her son Earl lived in Shelby. She was 42 and was born in Norway. Five years earlier, she and Earl had lived in Valier.
Joe Zagotta’s obit calls her Magnhild Orvis Pederson and says that they married in 1940.
Magnhild’s daughter was called Mrs. Ronald Nelson in a brief notice in the Conrad Independent Observer in its 5 Dec 1957 edition.
Her death notice in the Great Falls Tribune on 18 Sep 1980 called her Margaret Zagotta and said that she had died at a local hospital. | KARLSEN, Magnhild Aleksandra (I29527)
