Enlisted in the U.S. Army 27 Oct 1936, released 30 Sep 1957. Promoted from Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant in June of 1941.

In the 1941 city directory for Lincoln, Nebraska, he was a salesman for Miller & Paine Inc. and resided at 1035 B.

He was a major in the U.S. Army when he was reassigned from RyCom in the Pacific theatre to the U.S. in 1955.

He married the 26 year-old Addie Rene Walker (at that time she was Addie Rene Givens) in Clark County, Nevada, in August of 1978. She died in 1993 at the age of 40.

Laverne 'Vern' Tonsager 1940–2017 Circle Lake—Laverne "Vern" Tonsager, age 77 of Northfield, passed away surrounded by family on October 27th, at his home. Vern Darrell Tonsager was born July 19, 1940, in Northfield, Minnesota, to Ruby (Fredrickson) and Lester Tonsager. Vern was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was raised in Northfield and was a house painter for 55 years. Vern was an active parishioner and volunteer at Annunciation Church in Hazelwood, MN. Vern battled Leukemia for three years and Pancreatic Cancer for the last 18 months, facing the diagnosis with courage, and determination. Vern continued working until recently and deeply missed a hard day's work. He loved spending winters in Ft Myers and fishing on the ocean with his buddies and family. He spent three decades on Circle Lake where his hobbies were fishing and building houses. He cherished all of the time with his grandkids and great-grandkids more than anything else. Survivors include wife Gwen (Elzen) Tonsager; his children, Dawn (Brian) Cherwinka of Faribault, Troy Tonsager of Eagan, Kari (Brian) Amacher of Faribault, Tony of Waseca; his grandchildren Brittany (Zack) Sisk of Chicago, Illinois, Ashlee (Trent) Hering of Waterville, Kelsey Cherwinka of Faribault; Conner, Olivia, Landon and Caden Tonsager of Eagan; Marisa, Joshua, and Grace Amacher of Faribault, Kaylee and Allison Tonsager of Rochester; his great-grandchildren Chase Hering and Rylin Tonsager; his sister Darlene (David) Endres of Eagan. Preceding him in death were his parents Ruby and Lester Tonsager; mother and father-in-law, Alice and Henry Elzen; sisters Shirley Gould, Joannie Anderson, and Roxie Judkins. A memorial Mass will be held at 11AM, Monday, October 30th, 2017, at the Church of the Annunciation, 4996 Hazelwood Ave, Northfield, MN 55057. Visitation will be 9-11AM, prior to the funeral Mass at the Church of the Annunciation. Interment will take place directly after the funeral Mass at the Annunciation Church Cemetery.

In the 1905 state census, Dina and her four children lived on College Avenue in Northfield.

From the Faribault Daily News, Jan. 20, 1959:

Funeral services were held at the Vang Lutheran Church Tuesday, January 13, at 2 p.m. for Mrs. Dina Lockrem. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Mrs. Cyrus Midje was the organist. Pallbearers were Franklin and Clarence Thoreson, Arnold Ellingboe and Herman Kasa. Committal services were held at the Vang Cemetery in the family lot. Mrs. Lockrem was the former Dina Thoreson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Finkel Thoreson. She was born in this community September 20, 1867; baptized November 24, 1867, and confirmed May 21, 1882. She was married February 17, 1891, to Andrew K. Lockrem. They lived in Northfield for many years and since 1917, in Minneapolis. She passed away January 9, in Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter. Surviving are three sons, Fred, Arthur and Carl, all of Minneapolis. There are seven grandchildren, 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
