Her death certificate identifies her father as Severson. Her mother’s name was unknown to her son Arthur who was the informant. She died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

In a 1912 land ownership map, Lena H Bye owned about 180 acres in the northeast quarter of Section 24 of Tumuli Twp in Otter Tail County. That parcel is still ascribed to her (Lena H Bye) in the 1934 Fergus Falls rural directory. The particulars were 156.61 acres in section 24 of the Tumuli township.

Her maiden name is spelled “Schruth” in the Minnesota death index for Lloyd. It is also “Schruth” in the birth records for her two sons as recorded in Wisconsin Births and Christenings.

According to her marriage record, her parents were John F. Schruth and Marie T. Markes.

Ervin B. on his death certificate, which says his birth year was 1910.

In the 1927 Willmar city directory, he is Irving B Ellingboe, laborer for Western F Exp Co, residing with his parents at 202 Anthony.

In the 1930 census, he was a farm laborer on the Robert Young farm in Twelve Mile Twp, Williams County, North Dakota.

In the 1940 census, he was a farmer on a rented farm in Kerkhoven Twp. He had an 8th grade education, Hazel had had one year of high school.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he and Hazel lived at 207 W 28th Street. Ervin was a laborer for Williams Hardware.

In the 1950 census, he and his family lived in Minneapolis. He worked intermittently as a laborer in construction. Hazel worked as a salad girl in a restaurant.

His obit in the Star said that he had been a compressor operator with Twin City Sandblast.

In the 1940 census, Herbert, Cornell, Myrtle, and Mary (”mother”) lived on a farm in Kerkhoven Twp. Myrtle, with two years of high school, was a postmaster. Mary had had zero years of education, Herbert seven and Cornell eight.

In the 1950 census, Cornell and Myrtle lived in Norway Lake in Kandiyohi County. Cornell was a postal clerk, his wife was the post master.

Shown as illegitimate in her baptism record. The first daughter yet not named after her paternal grandmother because of the rule to name first children after dead spouses. Thus, she was named after Claus’s first wife.

Sponsors for her baptism were: Torbjørn Andersen Kleiven, Anders Andersen Mareim, Marthe Pedersdatter Kleiven, Sophie Pedersdatter Kleiven, Anna Pedersdatter Heidshammer.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Susanna Clausdatter, born in 1860 in Hafslo.

Was 4 feet, 10 inches tall but "a great woman, always jolly," according to Cora.

Lived in California for awhile with her five (?) children. Susan’s obit says that she spent 11 years in California but this doesn’t seem possible because she is shown to be in Franklin Township in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

Census-taker Torge Berge visited the Claus Bowe farm on June 13, 1900. The family consisted of Claus, 67 (born in June 1833), Carrie, 66 (born in Sept 1833), Sever, 34 (born May 1866), Louisa, 22 (born April 1878), Nils, step-son, widower, 46 (born Sep 1853), Andrew, adopted son, 37 (born Sep 1862), Susanna Monson, married, 39 (born December 1860), Martin, 10 (born March 1890), Clara, 7 (born May 1893), and Rhody, 4 (born May 1896). Louisa and Susan’s kids are shown as born in Wisconsin, everyone else was born in Norway. Claus, Carrie, Sever, Nils, Andrew, and Susanna emigrated in 1867. Carrie is shown as having borne 10 children, 7 still living. Susanna is shown as having borne 8 children, 5 still living.

Susan’s husband Thomas “Munston”, along with their son Albert and daughter Caroline (“Carrie”), are in Butte Township, Siskiyou County, California at the time (June 12) of the 1900 census. Thomas doesn’t have an occupation shown but Albert is already working in a box factory and Carrie is in school.

In the 1910 census, Susan and her family are back in Vernon County in Kickapoo Township. Albert Munson is the head of family (so he hadn’t changed his name to Ekum yet). Albert is 27, Susana is 47 and widowed, Martin is 20, Clara is 16, and Rhoda is 14. They own their farm but it is mortgaged. Martin is shown as a laborer, “working out.” Susana is shown has having emigrated in 1866. There are no entries for the number of children Susan has had.

In the 1915 Vernon County plat book, the family is in Kickapoo Twp, just over the line from Franklin Twp, on the road to Readstown. Albert Ekum is shown as the owner of 77.34 acres (85 in the Farmers’ Directory). Martin Ekum is shown as owning 80 acres in the Farmers’ Directory but he is not shown on the plat map so it probably means that he and Albert jointly own the same 80.

Census-taker Douglas Nelson visited the Anderson/Nundahl/Ekum farms (they were contiguous, apparently, which is consistent with Cora’s memory) on January 11, 1920, and found:

Martin Ekum, 29, owner of mortgaged property, farmer in general farming, an employer. Susan, mother, 51, [59? 61?] widow, immigrated in 1870, naturalized but no date shown. Rhoda, sister, 24, single, born in Wisconsin, no occupation.

In the 1930 census, Susan and Rhoda and Martin lived at 165 West Maple in Viroqua in a house that Martin owned.

In the 1940 census (indexed as Ekrem), Susan and Rhoda and Martin live at 165 West Maple Street. Susan is shown as the owner of the house, worth $400. She had a sixth grade education.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Anders Larsen, “foster son”, born in 1862 in Hafslo.

Andrew Bowe's biological mother was Carrie Bowe's sister. She died giving birth to Andrew according to Cora and this is confirmed by the church book. Andrew’s obituary says that Claus and Kari adopted him when he was one day old.

Andrew is not listed with the rest of the family unit in the 1870 U.S. census. Nor is he listed with the rest of the family in the 1910 census.

The 23 Apr 1890 edition of the Vernon County Censor describes an injury that occurred during a drilling operation on the Ole Lewison farm. “… a young man named Andrew Bowe had his right hand caught and frightfully crushed in the cog wheels. He was brought to this city and the wound was dressed by Dr. Gott who amputated one finger and thinks it may be necessary to remove more of them.”

Andrew never married. He is shown in the 1920 census living with Louise in Viroqua.

According to the 1920 census, was naturalized in 1890. May have emigrated in 1870 but the date is illegible. Shown as age 54 in the 1920 census which suggests birth ca 1865.

According to the 1930 census, emigrated in 1874.

In the 1896-1897 and 1897-1898 Duluth city directories, she is Emma Aune, a clerk for Johnson & Moe, who boards at 2221 W Michigan. In the 1898-1899, 1899, and 1900 city directories, she is Emma Aune, a clerk for Adolph Freimuth and who boards at 2221 W Michigan.

In the 1901 city directory, she is shown as Emma Aune, “seams Mrs. Mary Jensen, rms 2108 W Superior.”
