Sheila Diane Benson Cheeks, 68, of Winona, MN died Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Ostrander Nursing Home, Ostrander, MN.

Sheila Diane Benson was born September 3, 1947 to Vernon and LaVaughn (Vick) Benson in Lanesboro, MN. She was raised in Rushford, MN. Sheila married Robert P. Cheeks and they were later divorced. During their marriage, the couple lived in various countries and states, while Robert was in the service. They mainly lived in Illinois where Sheila worked for 6 Flags in Gurnee, IL.

Sheila was a big Minnesota Vikings fan. She always wore purple and would frequently visit Mankato, MN to attend Viking training camp. She also enjoyed playing Bingo.

Sheila is survived by her son James Cheeks, Winona, MN; her sister Nancy Benson, Winona, MN; four brothers, Terry (Linda) Benson, Foster, RI, Dennis (Pat) Benson, Fountain City, WI, Duane Benson, Winona, MN, Kenneth (Carol) Benson, Rushford, MN; her grandchildren, Nick and Cole Knutson and Zayden Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter Teresa Benson Knutson.

Sheldon L. Toso, 69, of Hoffman, MN, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sheldon was born May 30, 1941, in Baker, ND, to Otto and Magnhilda (Olstad) Toso. He attended school and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1959. On July 3, 1960, Sheldon married Beverly Dahl in Hampden, ND.

The couple moved to International Falls where Sheldon was an assistant manager for Woolworth’s. The family then moved to Devils Lake where he worked in a service station. They later moved to Moorhead where he worked for Mathison Tire in Fargo, and on to Duluth where Sheldon worked for Seiberling Tire Company and Mathison Tire. In November 1983, they moved to Hoffman where Sheldon and Beverly had “Toso’s Hoffman House.” He later went to work for Cenex in Hoffman and retired in 2006.

Sheldon was devoted to his family and loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed reading and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; sons, Dean (Donna) Toso of Moorhead, MN, Brian (Kelly) Toso of Little Falls, MN and Daryn (Nicolle) Toso of Fergus Falls, MN; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Erick, Derek, Blake, Kylie, Trent and Mitchell; and two brothers, Wallace (Arlyce) Toso and Dennis (Doris) Toso.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mavis; and four brothers, Howard, Orvin, Donald, and Alvern.

Sherman Adrian Mickelson, age 74, of Gays Mills, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 2009, surrounded by his family at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.??He was born on May 10, 1934, in Viroqua to Clarence and Ida (Nundahl) Mickelson. Sherman graduated from Viroqua High School with the Class of 1952. On Feb. 5, 1955, he married Lois Aspenson. Sherman worked at the Kickapoo Locker Plant until purchasing Westby Locker & Meats with his brother-in-law, Ronald Aspenson. In 1991, he purchased Mickelson’s Market along with his son, Steve, and worked there until his retirement. Sherman was the Gays Mills Fire Chief for several years. He also was an active member of Luther Memorial Church, Gays Mills and served as treasurer. Sherman loved his community, family and friends. He will be sadly missed by those who loved and knew him.??Sherman is survived by his wife, Lois Mickelson; four children, Debra Mickelson, Kristie (Mark) Brownie, Steven (Dori) Mickelson and Scott Mickelson; nine grandchildren, Hillary and Eric Mickelson, Rachel and Megan Brownie, Kyle and Tyler Mickelson, Cody (Katie) Brockway, Mindy (Aaron) Holbein and Taylor Mickelson; five great-grandchildren; his faithful friend, Sam, his dog; and two sisters, Becky Grangaard and Inky (Robert) Larson.??He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant brother; granddaughter, Amber Mickelson; three brothers-in-law, Ronald Aspenson, Art Helgerson and Kenneth Grangaard.??Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Luther Memorial Church in Gays Mills. Officiating at the service was Pastor Pam Loewski with burial in the Gays Mills Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mark Larson, Roderick, Roland and Adrian Aspenson, Dan, Robert and Allan Helgerson and Jay Kvigne. A visitation was held Wednesday evening, Feb. 4, 2009, at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua and again at church on Thursday prior to the service.?

Sherman D. Ellingboe, 71, of Pengilly, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth.

He was born at home in Kerkhoven, Minn. on Nov. 17, 1938, to Robert and Lillian Ellingboe and he grew up in Benson, Minn. Sherman was united in marriage to Sharon Resch on Nov. 29, 1980, in Anoka and had worked as a diesel mechanic for Advance United Trucking Company. He was an accomplished craftsman who enjoyed woodworking projects, fishing and playing cribbage with Sharon. He was a member of Nashwauk Lutheran Church.

Sherman Howard Buschow was born June 5, 1933, in Wells, MN. He was the firstborn to Alfred and Evelyn Buschow. His brother David, came along 2 years later. When Sherman was 9 years old, he attended Vacation Bible School at a church in his small town where he first decided to follow Jesus.  His little sister Dawn was born when Sherman was 17 years old.

After high school, Sherman attended North Central Bible Institute and began to prepare for full time ministry. During his senior year, a beautiful new freshman, Charlotte Dahlager, caught his eye, and it was love at first sight! Sherman graduated from North Central in June 1954. Now Reverend Buschow, a young man engaged to Charlotte, began his first pastorate in a small church in New Auburn, MN. Sherman and Charlotte were married in November 1954. Charlotte would now be by his side in life and ministry for the next 60 years.

Their baby boy, Daniel Sherman was born in June 1956. Along came Dan’s first little sister, Debra Jean in July 1958. During this time, Sherman and Charlotte pastored Buffalo Lake, and then began traveling as evangelists, preaching and singing in churches throughout the state of Minnesota.

In December of 1959, their little 17 month old Debra Jean suddenly died and went to be with Jesus. Sherman (26) and Charlotte (24) determined in their hearts that this heartbreak would help to make them be “better, not bitter”. This sad part of their story gave Sherman and Charlotte a sweet compassion for others for the rest of their lives.

Sherman began to pastor the church in Wadena. One year after losing little Debbie, a new baby sister for little Danny, Pamela Sue joined the family. They moved to Alexandria to pastor in 1963, and a few years later, another baby girl, Juli Ann was born. Sherman continued to pastor in Alexandria, and moved to Winona to pastor there in 1972.

In 1974, Sherman and Charlotte were called to pastor the Anoka Assembly of God Church. Pastor Buschow was a visionary and along with the board of trustees, moved into a large building program on property at 3210 Bunker Lake Blvd, now Riverdale Church in Andover, MN. The church family was excited to move from near downtown Anoka to a larger, custom built facility on 20 acres of land to accommodate the growing congregation. Pastor Buschow was senior pastor at Anoka for 10 years. Sherman and Charlotte later pastored the People’s Church in Columbia Heights for 6 years, and then pastored at Hutchinson Assembly of God for a few years before retiring from 50+ years of serving churches across Minnesota.

After retiring from full time ministry, Sherman became the “Million Dollar Man” at Wickes furniture having over 4 million in sales during his time with the company. Sherman ministered wherever he went, and used every opportunity to tell people about Jesus, connected others to local churches, and even invited some of his customers who were new in town to meet Charlotte and have dinner in their home.

After his sales retirement, Sherman became the Chaplain for Epiphany Senior Living Center in Coon Rapids. Sherman and Charlotte held weekly services for several years together. Sherman would share a message, and Charlotte would lead hymns from the piano. They would also make room to room visits, loving on the residents and staff of the facility, and sharing the hope of Jesus.

Sherman's dear Charlotte was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away in June of 2014. By was determined to keep living, and to keep ministering. He continued to minister as Chaplain at Epiphany until April 2016 when Sherman had a stroke and was diagnosed with an early stage of dementia.

After his stroke, he was no longer able to live alone. Sherman moved to assisted living, with Juli and Dan as primary caregivers. In August 2018, Pam and Ryan asked to take on dad’s care, and the family moved Sherman to an assisted living home in Missouri, close to Pam and Ryan’s home. Sherman’s challenges were short term memory and self care. However, he could remember family, people, stories and ministry details. It was amazing to visit with him and hear him recall so many beautiful memories and stories of loved ones from all seasons of his life. If a person’s name came up, he could give details, all the way back to his childhood years in Wells, MN. He always remembered names of family and friends, and continued to pray for the needs of others in his final years.

Up to early 2020, Sherman was able to go to Pam and Ryan’s home, many times enjoying holidays, game nights, home cooked meals, making lefse, family visits and sun-filled days on the pontoon, either fishing or just relaxing until sunset.

2020 was a difficult year for all. For Sherman, this meant quarantine in his living quarters for several weeks at times, with no visits, only phone calls, or visits at his window - by which he was really confused as to why family would not just come through the door to come inside to be with him!

Summer of 2020 allowed for outdoor visits, which Pam, Ryan and visiting family took every opportunity to bring his favorite food and to have lovely picnic style meals as often as possible. He enjoyed eating fish, and was especially happy to have that meal brought to him!

Fall of 2020 came and because of weather, only pre-schedule, 1 hour visits were allowed, 6 feet apart and wearing masks. All of this was especially difficult for Sherman, with hearing issues, as he relied heavily on lip-reading to
communicate.

All the while he was still ministering. Up until January 14, 2021, with Pam’s assistance, Sherman was still sending video messages and prayers for his family, listing needs before the Lord, praying over us by name. Staff, caregivers, and fellow residents have told the family many stories of how Sherman would pray for them and share God’s love and plan of salvation with them. They called him “preacher man”! He was so kind, peaceful and always content, regardless of any limitations he had.

January 18, 2021, Pam went for her 1 hour visit, and dad was extra sleepy, not talking. She saw a rapid decline and called family to share her concern. Dan was scheduled for two heart procedures, so he was unable to go to Missouri. But Juli quickly left MN, to fly to Kansas City. After two days of only Pam and Juli with him in his small room, they knew he was getting close to saying goodbye. They asked Dad if he was ready to go to heaven. With a slight movement of his head, he nodded “yes”.

On Saturday, January 23, the family was able to arrange a medical transport and moved Sherman out of assisted living to Pam and Ryan’s home. This move allowed for more family to gather and say goodbye. 30 minutes prior to Sherman’s passing to heaven, Pam and Juli did a video call with Dan and prayed with him before he left for the hospital for his second heart procedure. 20 minutes later, as Dan was leaving for the hospital, Pam and Juli called Dan to let him know that Dad had gone on to heaven.

As Sherman took his final breath, he had loved ones near with prayer, stories and singing all around him. Family was with him singing “Blessed Assurance Jesus is mine- this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior, all the day long!” Sherman had a beautiful home-going. He is now with his Savior, his dearly beloved Charlotte, his darling daughter Debbie, and many family and friends that were waiting to celebrate his arrival. We know by the life Sherman lived, he heard from his Savior, “Well done, good and faithful servant! Welcome home!”

20 amazing grandchildren: Marissa, Derek & Jen, Amanda & Derek, Tim & Katie, Samantha & Mark, Leslie, RJ & Julieta, Josiah & Meghan, Jamie & Jareb, Jessica & Mitchell, Jake & Milanna and 19 precious great grandchildren: Brilee, Payton, Hadley, Brynn, Blake, Jett, Savannah, Madison, Kylie, Judson, Elle, MJ, Tinley, Jersey, Mica, Evelyn, Isla, Rhodes, and Charlotte.
