A large article in the 28 Sep 1904 edition of the Minneapolis Times described Harriet’s “summer tour through Alaska.” Harriet claimed that the scenery along the White Pass Railroad surpassed the Rockies or even the Alps.
In the 1905 Minnesota census, she was Harriet P. N. Smith living at 18 Royalston Avenue in Minneapolis. That census shows her born in Connecticut to parents born in Connecticut. Harriet had lived at the Royalston address for 6 years and 1 month.
In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, she is Harriet P N Smith, identified as the widow of Seagrave, living at 1770 Emerson Ave S.
She is not listed as living in Minnesota in the 1910 census.
A Norton family history says that her parents were Isaac Ives Norton and Nancy Elmina Marcy. Of Harriet it says that her first husband was Alvert Norton, a distant cousin and a native of Blandford, Massachusetts. By him she had three children, all of whom died young.
An article in the Minneapolis Morning Tribune on 10 Nov 1917 notes that, at her death, Harriet’s estate was valued at $323,648. The article notes that the estate paid inheritance taxes of $19,818 to the state of Minnesota. The largest bequests were to Harriet’s sister, Fannie Robinson, nephew, and niece. Lillian Riggs was born February 1, 1931, in Omak, Washington, and passed on December 19, 2024, in Spokane. She married Kenneth Riggs in 1953 and had two daughters and then moved to Spokane in 1957. When Ken retired, they moved to Four Lakes, Washington.
She was kind-hearted, loved her family and was thankful for her friends. She attended church throughout her life. She was a seamstress, knitter, spinner/weaver, gardener, avid reader, and a fan of cats and dogs. When Ken passed, she remained in Four Lakes, moving in with her daughter and son-in-law in 2018 and entering memory care in 2022.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Gladys Lee; and by her brother, Burton Lee. She is survived by her daughters, Shirle Riggs and Sharon Riggs (Craig Miller). | LEE, Lillian E (I19725)
