18423 Service number 328 82 84. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Fargo on January 3, 1941. As a Seaman, 1st Class, assigned to the U.S.S. Antares, he was a witness to, and survivor of, the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. He remained assigned to the Antares until November of 1942, when he was a Coxswain assigned to the newly-repaired ocean-going tug U.S.S. Vireo (AT-144). He was a BM2c on December 1, 1942. He remained with the Vireo throughout 1943, during which time he participated in resupply operations for Guadalcanal. The Vireo was attacked by dive bombers in April of 1943 and participated in the Battle of Kula Gulf in July of 1943. On January 11, 1944, he was assigned to the newly-commissioned U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay (CVE-75), an escort carrier also known as a “baby flattop.” This ship carried aircraft and crews to Pearl Harbor from the U.S. through March, engaged in anti-submarine warfare in May and June, and supported various missions around the Phillipines and New Guinea for the remainer of 1944 and into 1945. In early January, on the way to Lingayen Gulf, the crew of the Hoggatt Bay fought Japanese suicide planes. By mid-1946, Clarence was assigned to the U.S.S. Palau (CVE-122).

Referred to in a 2005 article on Pearl Harbor in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal as “Elizabeth Township native Clarence Lyngstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Poynter.”

Clarence Orville Lyngstad, 79, a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Home. He was born Sept. 16, 1921, to Carl and Martha (Olson) Lyngstad in Elizabeth Township, rural Elizabeth. He was raised and attended school in the Erhard area. He joined the Navy in 1940 and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II until 1946. On June 29, 1946, he married Doris Toso Bloch in Norfolk, Va. They lived for a few years in California and Fergus Falls. Then they lived for 20 years on South Turtle Lake near Underwood. Clarence worked as a painter for several years before going to work for the city of Fergus Falls. Clarence was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, VFW Post 612 and the American Legion all of Fergus Falls. He loved woodworking, gardening, picture framing and ice fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Esther (William) Muller, Myrtle (Wallace) Murphy and two brothers, Clifford and Marvin Lyngstad. Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters, Lynette (Roger) Hutchins of Fergus Falls, LaDonna (Mandus) Olson of Alexandria; one son, Deland (Sharon) Bloch of Savage; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence (Henry) Merz of Fergus Falls and several nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation: Monday from 4-8 pm with family present from 6-8 at the Olson Funeral Home, and resumes one hour prior to the services at the church. Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday October 17, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. Clergy: Rev. She was born at Emmetshurg, Iowa, and had lived in Minneapolis 43 years. She had been a clerk for the Veterans administration and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran church.

Survivors are a brother, the Rev. A. Gottfried Gjevre, Granite Falls, Minn., and two sisters, Marie, Minneapolis, and Hulda, Walla Walla, Wash.

Interment will be private. He was the dear son of Daniel and Kathryn Norton; fond brother of Jeffrey (Patricia), Steven, Kristen, Gregory and Kevin Norton; loving grandson of Jack Mortell, Mary Becker, and the late Henry and Mabel Norton; and cherished uncle of Kimberly, Michelle and Amanda Norton. 18428 Services for James D. Ireland, 80, of Jackson will be 1:30 p.m. today at United Methodist Church, Jackson. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Jackson.

Ireland died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Colonial Manor, Lakefield. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Osterberg Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge of arrangements.

James Donald Ireland was born July 7, 1928, in Wadena, the son of Roy and Irma (Van Dyke) Ireland. He served in the U.S. Army in the Infantry Regiment and the 82nd Airborne Division.

Survivors include: wife, Darlene Ireland of Jackson; son, Jeff Ireland of Fort Dodge, Iowa; daughter, Jody Nailor of Lansing, Mich.; step-children, Susan Schneider of Cazadero, Calif., Steven Carpenter of Jackson, Karla Thurmer of Boca Raton, Fla., and Karen Wells of Jackson; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Hill of Wadena and Patricia Conley of Spokane, Wash.

18429 Services for Kathy Holen, 61, of Marshall and formerly of Montevideo, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. There will also be visitation at the church for one hour before the service.

She died Friday, March 17, 2017, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kathy Jo (Lien) Holen was born July 26, 1955, in Granite Falls, the daughter of Robert and Donna Mae (Bakker) Lien. She was baptized and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church. Kathy graduated from Maynard High School in 1973 and later from Granite Falls Vo-Tech after studying to be a legal secretary. She worked for several attorneys as a paralegal. She was united in marriage with Todd Holen in June of 1988. They made their home in Montevideo. Kathy worked in Willmar at Western Minnesota Legal Services for over 30 years. She lived in Arizona for a few years before moving back to Minnesota. She was currently working at People Ready in Marshall. She enjoyed going for walks and doing crafts. Kathy was very involved with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her mother, Donna Mae Lien of Granite Falls; three sons, Jeremy (Alisha) Lien of Granite Falls, Chad Holen of Benson, and Christopher (Sarah) Lien of Lucan; nine grandchildren, Justin, Kaitlynn, Ashlynn, Seth, Ayla, Mason, Konner, Zoey, and Emily; and two brothers, Stanton (Joni) Lien of Maynard and David (Sue) Lien of Maynard.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents, Bernard (Alice) Lien and John (Grace) Bakker and her father, Robert Lien.

18430 Services for Laurie L. Wallin (Anderson), 45, of Osseo were Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Washburn-McReavy Columbia Heights Chapel.

She died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 1.

Mrs. Wallin is survived by her father, Ewald Anderson; sisters, Joyce (Conroy) Townsend, Susan Risinger, and Donna (Tim) McGrath; brothers, Robert (Marie) Anderson and Gary Anderson; nine nieces and nephews; good friends, Chris Wallin, and Syd and Anisa Thompson. If you know anyone who is depressed, please get help before it is too late.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Ardes.
