In the 1940 census Bert (indexed as Bert Astendorf, at least in FS) and Myrtle lived in Los Angeles. They had both lived there in 1935 but not in the same house. He was a cab driver, she was a cashier at a produce market. He had been educated through the fifth grade, Myrtle was a high school graduate.

She was a 72 year-old widow in the 1895 state census and the 77 year-old widow Maren Qualy living with Anders and Anna in Kerkhoven Twp in the 1900 census. In that 1900 census, she is erroneously shown as having had only one child.

The Quale Family Tree on Ancestry has her dying in Minnesota in January of 1903.

In the 1895 Iowa census, she is Mary Ellingboe, divorcee. Living with her are Bella Ellingboe, 27, Halvor Austin, 22, Hendriete Johnson, 17, Johan Johnson, 15, and Klara Ellingboe, 10. {??} Mary and her family are Lutheran. Bella is a dressmaker. Halvor is shown as subject to military duty and entitled to vote. Johan did not attend school in 1894.

In the 1900 census, she is Mary Ellingbo, still in Springfield Twp, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She is a divorcee and her three youngest children Halvor, Henrietta, and John are living with her. She has had 11 children, 7 still alive. She came to the U.S. in 1861.

Called Marit Ellingboe in Henrietta’s marriage record.

She is not listed in the 1915 Iowa census.

Her daughter Sigrid’s birth record shows her father’s name as Anfind.
