In the 1910 census, as Marie Lima, she lived with her son Reier and his family in Clackamas County, Oregon. She was recorded a second time in the 1910 census as Mary Lima, mother-in-law, living with her daughter Rakel Lee. In that second entry, she is shown as having had 12 children, 6 still living. (This latter number assumes Hanna has died.)

She came to the U.S. in August of 1894 with the Gustads as “L. Gustad.” She would not have had to have been married to Edward yet at that time to use the surname Gustad because she was also born on the Gustad farm on Averøy.

Called Eliza Young on at least two (Agnes, Eva) of her children’s birth certificates.

Called Elisa in the 1900 census and shown as 34 years old having been born in May of 1866 and having been married for 6 years. She emigrated in 1894. Shown as being unable to read, write or to speak English. Shown as having had 3 children, only two living.

Called Lucy in the 1910 census, 44 years old, married for 15 years. By this time she’s able to demonstrate that she can read and write and can speak English. Shown as having had 7 children, only 4 living. {These were Margaret, Agnes, Elsie, and Eva.}

Called Eliza in the 1920 census. Shown as age 52 which would suggest that she was born in 1867. Immigrated in 1894, naturalized in 1896.

She spoke to the WPS interviewer Mildred Monson in June of 1937. She said that they lived at the Cedar Lake farm for 16 years. In 1910 they sold this farm and came to the Cuyuna Range. Ed built their Cuyuna home in 1913. They lived in it for three years and then sold it. Then in 1917 they built not far from Serpent Lake, ‘where they now reside.’”

In that interview, Elise listed her four living children and said that she had four children that died very young. Elise made no mention of her daughter Elsie who had died 8 years earlier at the age of 20.

In his letter to Harold dated October 15, 1944, George mentions going to “Mrs. Gustad’s” funeral on October 7th. He says that Eva, Freddie, Agnes, and Margaret were all there.

Her daughter Eva (Mrs. W. C. Hartland of Ohio) was the informant for her death certificate. Elise died from pneumonia complicated by pernicious anemia.

She celebrated her 93rd birthday on May 1, 1959, according to an article in that day’s Davenport Daily Times. She was born in Motala, Sweden. Her only grandchildren were Amy’s three. However, the article also says that this older Amelia had six great-grandchildren; she actually had eight.

She changed her name on her Social Security record to Mary Lou Rice in February of 1966. Her original Social Security name, when she first registered in May of 1953 was Mary Louise Bye.

In the 1954 Klamath Union High School yearbook (Klamath Falls, Oregon), she was a sophomore and went by Mary Lou Bye.

In the 1955 Klamath Falls city directory, she was Mary L Bye, a clerk at Blocks Shoe Store. She lived with her brother, mother, and step-father Leo Boyle at 4680 Peck Drive in Klamath Falls.
