John and Margaret were renting an apartment at 2555 Bryant Avenue S. in Minneapolis at the time of the 1930 census. John L. Jr. is listed (age zero) but Mary Margaret is not. John is 25, Margaret is 21. They were married at ages 22 and 19, respectively. All three are shown as having been born in Minnesota. Both of Margaret’s parents were born in Norway. John’s mother was born in Norway but his father was born in Wisconsin. John’s occupation is shown as artist in the engraving or engineering industry. Margaret has no occupation listed. (She would have just graduated from St. Olaf.)
The Ellingboes’ address is simply 26th and Bryant on Mary Margaret’s birth certificate.
John, Margaret, and 17 month-old John visited Europe in 1931. They arrived back in the U.S. in New York on April 16th aboard the S.S. Lafayette which had departed Le Havre, France, on April 8th. All three of them were travelling under U.S. passport 313558. Their address in the U.S. was Northfield, Minnesota.
In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, he was an artist for Augsburg Publishing House. He and Margaret lived at 5329 35th Avenue S.
He was listed in the 1933 Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition with a woodcut, Saint Luke.
In the 1935 and 1936 Minneapolis city directories, he was an artist for Augsburg Publishing House. He and Margaret lived at 129 E 56th.
In the 1938 Minneapolis directory, he is still an artist with Augsburg. He resides in Robbinsdale.
His work at Ausburg included illustrating Sunday School textbooks and other publications for children, including The Boy Who Fought with Kings, A Life of Martin Luther, and Little Koto, A Boy of Madagascar.
Inthe 1940 census, he and his family live in Robbinsdale. John was a college graduate, Margaret claimed two years of college. John was the art director for a publishing house. They owned their house, worth $5500, at 3363 France Avenue. (He gave the address as 3263 France in his draft registration on 16 Oct 1940.)
In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was a commercial artist at 423 5th Avenue S. He resided at RD 4, Richfield.
In the 1950 census, John and Margaret lived on Highway 5 in west Bloomington, not far from Bush Lake Road. He was a commercial artist at an art studio. He may have been independent by then because the census designation for his occupation is “owner” and not “employee.”
They lived at 7806 S 78th Street in Bloomington at the time the engagement of their son to Sonya was announced in September of 1951.
In the 1958 Glendale city directory, he was an advertising artist. He and Margaret lived at 4661 Lowell Avenue.
A November, 1959, article in the Star had him in Hollywood, California.
He designed the altar cross in the little chapel in Agnes Melby Hall at St. Olaf College in Northfield. He also did the painting of the St. Olaf woman guided by the spirit of Christ which hangs in the chapel.
According to the Minneapolis city directory, John Ellingboe was employed as an artist by The Bureau of Engraving, “a large Twin Cities printing company,” according to Crump’s Minnesota Prints and Printmakers. By the late 1930s, he was at Augsburg Publishing.

From the February, 1944, St. Olaf alumni magazine: “Augsburg Publishing House has just published a book which is the product of three Oles: Philip Dybvig, '23, and Randolph Haugen, '24, editors, and John Ellingboe, ‘27, artist. The book is "The Forward March of Faith," centennial publication of the Norwegian Lutheran Church. From the points of view of physical make-up, art, and literary content, the book is an extraordinarily fine piece of work.”
The March, 1947, alumni magazine notes that John Ellingboe illustrated a children’s book by the Hongs (”The Boy Who Fought With Kings”) published by Augsburg in 1946.
The June, 1952, alumni magazine notes that he was a member of the Alumni Council and that his address was: John L. Ellingboe ('27) Richfield Station, R.R. 4, Minneapolis 9.

“{John} did work for Augsburg. I have a few of the Christmas annuals that included his work and some original silk screen prints of native American sites in the SW. He designed their handmade Christmas cards every year and sent them out to family. They lived in Hemet for a time and raised Beagles there.”

On June 28, 1920 as Henry W. Fisher Jr., he married Gladys L. Helgesen at the District of Columbia. In 1937 he married Margaret Skelton Atwood at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Henry W. Fisher Jr. was the owner and operator of the H.W. Fisher and Son specialty grocer in Georgetown. It was open for 104 years. The store was founded in 1861 and pioneered retail sales of frozen foods in the District of Columbia in the 1930s. He was born in the District and attended George Washington University. During World War I he served in the Navy. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Board of Trade and the advisory board of the Riggs Bank. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees and the official board of Foundry Methodist Church. He was Recording Secretary of the Board of Directors of the District Young Men’s Christian Association and the board of the Methodist Home. He died at age 68 at his Chevy Chase home of a heart attack. Survivors included his wife, Margaret A. Fisher and two sons, John A. and Christopher Fisher, all of 4601 Merivale Road in Chevy Chase; one son, Henry W. Fisher III of Whittier, California and three daughters: Mrs. Harriet F. Bradley [1921-2013], a member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors of 828 Mackall Avenue in McLean, Virginia; Mrs. Jean F. Holmes [later married to Richard Arnold; 1922-1998] of DeWitt, New York and Mrs. Margaret F. Scott [married John Howard Scott] of Winnetka, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth F. Miller of Scarsdale, New York; Mrs. Carlyle Spiers of Rye, New York and Mrs. Louise Stumpe of Philadelphia. Services were held at Foundry Methodist Church at 16rh and P Streets Northwest. On March 23, 2023 our family lost and Heaven gained our loving Mother Marge Sorensen.
Marge was born on May 13, 1926 to Mable and Albert Guthmiller at their farm home near Freeman, South Dakota. She grew up in rural Freeman and graduated from Menno High School in 1945. In 1946 she married Heins Heinsohn of Scotland, South Dakota, and they farmed near Olivet, South Dakota. They were blessed with two children – Lori Ann in 1959 and William Heins in 1963. Heins died tragically in a farm accident on November 6, 1971. In 1978 Marge married Lorell Sorensen of Flandreau and added three grown children Maxine, Shirley, and Jon to her family. Marge eventually added 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren to her family, in addition to many, much loved, nieces and nephews.
Marge loved music and she participated in many choirs and concerts. Her biggest thrill was participating in the Billy Graham Choir. She attended First Lutheran Church in Brookings and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, V.F.W Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and Brookings Activity Center. Marge did volunteer work in numerous nursing homes and hospitals.
Burial will be at the Scotland, South Dakota, cemetery.
Grateful for having shared her life are daughters Lori Heinsohn/Jones (husband Dean Jones), Maxine Bergh/Sorensen (husband George Bergh), Shirley Suedkamp/Sorensen (husband Dick Suedkamp), and son Bill Heinsohn (wife Sharon Heinsohn). On Monday, May 2, 2012, at age 63, Barb was surrounded by her loving family as she made her final journey home. Barb was born on March 3, 1949 to Donald E. and Jean C. (nee Ellingboe) Peterson. She is preceded in death by her dear father and leaves her beloved mother, sisters Nancy (Scott) Nushart and Susan (Ric) Green and brother Jerry (Lyn) to cherish her memory. She is further survived by many family members, including 10 nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends, both old and new. Barb received her nursing degree in 1972 and worked a variety of acute care specialties throughout her career up to 2011. Her love of her Irish heritage was apparent by her six vacations to the Emerald Isle. Barb was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), volunteering her skills at a number of racing events around the country every year.
Resided in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
