The Johan Lauritz b. 19 Mar 1855, bapt. 9 Apr, in Bodø (Salten) parish of Bodø town parish, Nordland, was the son of the unmarried couple Helena Pernille Larsdatter of Rodøgaard (sp?) and Carl Carlsen of Christiansund.

In the 1865 census, he is Johan Lauritz Carlsen, age 11, a poor orphan/foster son living on Vesterlie nedre in Skjerstad parish, Nordland. The farm is owned by Mads Olsen, age 49. His wife is Malene Hansdatter, age 34.

He is not the Johan P. O. Karlsen in the 1865 census or the Johan Karlsen in the 1875 census shown as the son of Karl Pedersen.

He is _not_ the Johan Edvard Mikal Karlsen, age 26, who married Ane Pauline Olsdatter in Meløy, Nordland, Norway, on 1 Aug 1881. That Johan’s father is shown as Karl Andreas Pedersen.

In the 1891 census, he is in Tysfjords and was born in 1855 in Bodø. He’s a school teacher and gbr. The rest of the household was his wife Anne Antonette Nomaren Olsdatter b. 1858 in Tysfjorden, the maid Helmine Pedersdatter, b. 1873 in Tysfjorden, the son Karl Hilmar Karlsen, b. 1885 in Tysfjorden, and the son Mads Elias Gustav Karlsen, b. 1888 in Tysfjorden.

In the 1900 Norwegian census, he was a school teacher living on the Hegholl farm in Beiarn, Norway. His wife is Anne Antonette, b. 1858 in Tysfjorden. In the 1910 Norwegian census, he was a gbr and schoolteacher living on the Hegholt farm in Beiarn, Norway. Everyone in the household was born in Bodin, Norway.

Beiarn is also a part of the Bodø Region, a statistical metropolitan region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Moldjord. According to Wikipedia: Bodin is a parish and former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The 672-square-kilometre (259 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1968. It was a large municipality encompassing all of the mainland area around the town of Bodø and part of the land on the southern shore of the Saltfjorden. Cheryl Dahl’s Wells Ross Family Tree claims he had a daughter Martha Carlson (1893-1925) who married Arthur Card Dawson. The Karlsens have no daughters in the 1900 census.

The Karlsen Family Tree on MyHeritage calls him Johan Ludvig Karlsen and has him dying in 1925.

He registered for the draft in Union County, Oregon, on June 5, 1917. Although his birthdate is given as February 4, 1890, his age is 28 so the draft registrar fumbled the subtraction. John E Anderson lives at 2108 Adams in LaGrande, Oregon, where he owns an auto garage. He is married with a wife and three children. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. (His brother Herman must have been living with him at that time. Herman used the same address.)

In the 1920 census, he is the 28 year-old John E Anderson, an automobile salesman living at 1808 First Street in La Grande in Union County, Oregon.

In the 1930 census, he is the 40 year-old John E Anderson, a wholesale and retail butcher living with his family in Coos, Coos County, Oregon. He is not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, he and Catherine live in Salem with their son Eugene and his family. John was an automobile salesman working 60 hours a week.

He registered for the World War draft in 1942 as John Edward Anderson. At that time, he and Catherine lived at 270 W. Miller in Salem, Oregon. He was employed by the Armsberger Motor Co. of Salem.
