Marjorie (Margie) Ann Peterka Swineheart passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 26, 2009; she was born Sept. 27, 1936, at Aitkin, Minn., the first child of Martin and Marie Peterka. The family later moved to California; then when Margie was 10 years old they moved to Idaho. She graduated from Orofino High School in 1954.

She married Carl Gibson in 1957 and moved to Columbus, Ohio. From this marriage she had three sons. The marriage later ended in divorce.

In 1974, Marjorie returned to Lewiston and raised her children. In 1977, she began a career as a homemaker (caregiver for the elderly) for the state of Idaho and continued the career until 1990. She later moved to Orofino and married Herb Swineheart in 2002.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Swineheart, and her parents, Martin and Marie Peterka.

Margie is survived by her three sons, Brett and Kathy Gibson of Lewiston, Greg and LeAnna Gibson of Waverly, Ohio, and Cameron Gibson of Gresham, Ore.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Gibson, Summer Gibson, Jamie Hannah Gibson, Casey Gibson and Clay McCartney; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Dale Daniels of Kennewick, Becky and Larry Beck of Orofino, Barbara and Garry Newbry of Cheney, Wash., and David Highfield of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She loved Orofino and all of her friends, classmates and the entire congregation at the Christian Covenant House where she was a devoted member.

Margie loved polka music and enjoyed dancing the polka in her younger days. She loved to laugh, talk and have fun.

She was particularly proud of her three sons; they were the apple of her eye. If Margie was about anything, she was about family, and she'll forever be in our hearts, never forgotten. Margie, we will miss you.

The celebration of life for Margie Swineheart will be conducted at noon Saturday at the Covenant House Christian Center, 12517 Hartford Ave., Orofino, with the Rev. Tristan Harvey officiating. She will be laid to rest at Wells Bench Cemetery. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel of Orofino is handling arrangements.

Marjorie L. Ekum, age 82, a lifelong resident of Monroe, died peacefully on Friday, December 3, 2009 surrounded by family and friends. ??Marjorie was born in Monroe on December 1, 1927 to the family of Nicholas and Edna Schmid. She had a passion for life and her Swiss heritage. In particular, Marjorie took great pride in raising the prize winning Brown Swiss herd on her mother and father's Meadow Green dairy farm located on the west side of Monroe. She won many awards for her champion Brown Swiss including a grand champion at the 1946 Waterloo Dairy Congress and the 1947 Wisconsin State Fair. ??After graduation from Monroe High School in 1946, she became the first woman to enroll in the Platteville State Teachers College School of Agriculture. ??Marjorie met Walter Ekum at Platteville and they were married on July 4, 1948 at the Union Presbyterian Church, Monroe. ??A source of continued pride for Marjorie was raising her family and supporting her husband in his business and eight year mayoral career with the City of Monroe. ??She demonstrated her generosity by donating a portion of land from the Meadow Green Farm and a park shelter to the City of Monroe which is now known as Sunset Park. ??She owned and operated the Chocolate & Nut Shoppe on the west side of the Square which she enjoyed for several years. ??She was a lifetime member of Union Presbyterian Church and in her leisure time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, playing cards and bird watching. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and volunteered her time to many charitable foundations and organizations. ??She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Maliszewski (Rick); her son, Eric Ekum (Anne); grandchildren, Ryan Maliszewski, Jeffrey Maliszewski, Nicholas Ekum, and Elizabeth Ekum; and a great grandson, Tanner. ??She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Lila Burns. ??Graveside services will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., at Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Rev. Marilyn Sandin-Ross of Union Presbyterian Church will officiate with a celebration of life to follow at the Ludlow Mansion. ??In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Marjorie's name for additions to Sunset Park. ??The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family. ??To send a condolence to Marjorie's family go to www.newcomerfuneralhome.net.

Marjorie Schlossman’s Twamley Family Research Tree

Father’s name Hennissen on her birth certificate; her mother’s maiden name Solem. Avis was adopted by the Hennissens. Her birth mother married a man who was not Avis’s birth father a few days after Avis was conceived.

She was appointed postmaster in Saint Vincent in Kittson County, Minnesota, in May of 1959.

She married Kenneth Halverson in Kittson County on 13 Jun 1960.

Avis (Hennissen) Halverson peacefully returned home on March 29, 2023, at Eventide on Eighth Care Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, after a brief illness. Many thanks to the staff at Eventide and Ethos Hospice.

Avis was born September 9, 1925, the daughter of Chris and Johanna Hennissen of Halma, Minnesota. Avis grew up in Halma. She graduated from Karlstad High School in 1943 then attended Bemidji State University and went on to teach primary grades in St Vincent, Minnesota.

On March 22, 1946, Avis married Ivan Twamley. They had one son, David. Ivan was the postmaster of the St. Vincent Post Office. When Ivan passed away in 1957, Avis took over as postmistress. There she met Kenneth Halverson, a widowed mail carrier from Walhalla, North Dakota. They married June 13, 1960, and Avis became step-mother to Geneal and Cordell Halverson. Avis and Ken blended their family with the birth of their son, Kent. They became residents of Jamestown, North Dakota, where they raised their family, including Tiny, their chihuahua.

Avis belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church and Christ Care Group in Jamestown. She worked as a teacher’s assistant in both the Eldridge and Spiritwood Schools. Avis continued to read the newspaper and keep up on current events throughout her life.

Avis left an indelible impression on everyone she met through her grace, humility and welcoming kindness. She enjoyed family photographs and her collection of spoons from her travels. Avis would often end a phone call with plans to chat again the next day, to which she would respond, “You bet. That’ll be fine.”

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, David Twamley and Kent Halverson; stepchildren Geneal Hall (Dick) and Cordell Halverson (Pat); grandchildren Ella Halverson, Jack Halverson, Julie Vomacka (Paul), Katie Hall (Merritt), Kristi Hall-Jiran (Brent), Ken Hall (Shayna), Jennifer Halverson (Anthony), Leasa Martinez (Richard), and Philip Halverson; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; special friends Joy Thiede, Tammy Lanaghan, Israel Carbajal, and Kris Kuelbs.

Avis is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and one grandchild.
