14601 Marie Magenta. Vang A, p. 103, calls him Ola Knutsson Eltun el. Tasa, Synsteikra. ELTUN, Ole Knutson (I37074)

14602 Marie married her first cousin.

Oleanna Johannesdatter, 43, and her four children (Jon Martinussen, 11, Marie Martinussdatter, 7, Anna Martinussdatter, 9, and Hans Martinussen, 5) left Norway on 5 April 1882 on the feeder ship Tasso to Hull, England. Their destination was Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Her death certificate, for which the informant was her son Robert, says that she was born in Trondheim.

Living in Biwabik, MN, at the time of Martin Bye’s death in 1932 and Anna Bye Everson's death in 1949. Living in Biwabik at the time of the 1920 census (January 20th). All five children were living at home at that time.

According to Edna Cartwright, she was 9 when the family emigrated and 15 when her mother died. These dates are only slightly inconsistent with other information. According to the 1920 census, Marie immigrated in 1883 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1892.

The 1890-91 Duluth directory lists Marie as Mary. Mary Bye is shown as "domestic, John Orfald" and living in West Duluth.

Lived with Edna in her later years and "was well into her '90s" when she died (according to Lil).

Marie was referred to as Mary by many in the family.

An article in the August 11, 1918, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune, datelined Biwabik, was headlined “Biwabik Woman and Daughter Found in Woods Following Prolonged Search.” Marie and one one of her daughters became lost picking blueberries. The Home guard and firemen found them “a few miles from the town of McKinley, wandering helplessly about the woods.” They had been lost for two days and a night.

The Thursday, October 18, 1945, edition of the Brainerd newspaper noted that “Mrs. J.B. Orfald, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cartwright and daughter, Linda, of Biwabik visited with the John Eversons Tuesday.”

The Thursday, August 21, 1947, edition of the Brainerd newspaper noted that “Mr. and Mrs. Henry Norton of Chicago, Mrs. Arthur Cartwright and Mrs. J. B. Orfold of Biwabik visited with Mrs. Anne Everson and John Everson on Thursday.”

Minnesota death certificate shows the date of death as June 19, 1966 in St. Louis County (Minnesota Death Certificate ID# 1966-MN-015728). The SSDI shows her date of death as August 15, 1966, with the indication “verified with family.”

As Marie Orfald, she was living with her daughter Edna Cartwright and family in Biwabik in the 1950 census.

Another Marie Orfald died in St. Louis County on May 25, 1938. (Death Cert # 1938-MN-013506)

From her obituary in the Biwabik newspaper:

Marie Othelia Orfald, a Biwabik resident since 1898, died early Sunday morning at Virginia Municipal Hospital. She had been in failing health since April and had been admitted to the hospital on June 3rd.

She was born in Trondheim, Norway on April 28, 1873.

She was a member of the Biwabik Community United Church of Christ.

She is survived by one son, Robert W. Orfald of Virginia, and five daughters: Mrs. Jennie Goodman, Biwabik, Mrs. Myrtle Lehto, Chicago, Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Saxhaug, Virginia, Mrs. Mabel Norton, Chicago, and Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Cartwright, Biwabik. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 31 great-great-grandchildren.

Her pallbearers were Vernon Saxhaug, Virginia, Richard Dane, Lakeland, Daniel Norton, Chicago, and Robert, John, and Rickey Goodman, all of Biwabik.

Her death certificate gives her usual residence as 322 2nd Ave N in Biwabik. She died of cerebral thrombosis.
BYE, Marie Othelie Martinusdatter (I144)

14603 Marie Seyller (née Wernette), 100, of Aurora, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 16, 2020. She passed away in her daughter's home surrounded by her family. She was born on July 17, 1920, in Forest City, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Vernor and Clara (Austin) Wernette. Mrs. Seyller moved to Aurora in 1942 where she worked at Elgin Watch and later at Barber-Greene where she met her future husband Charles "Chuck" Seyller - whom she insisted looked exactly like Glenn Miller. They were married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Aurora on May 5, 1944. In the beginning of 1949, she had her one-and-only daughter Claire, and proceeded to be (what witnesses call) the best mother ever. Witnesses also say that she was the best Grandmother and Great Grandmother ever - although these witnesses may be biased.

She grew up in the Lutheran Church and never missed an opportunity to tell you about this or her Norwegian ancestors. With her favorite Bible verse being John 3:16 and a favorite hymn of "Trust and Obey" both of which she learned in childhood and comforted her through her entire life. A favorite of hers would be to regale the nearest ear with how she taught her grandchildren these things and/or how she would hum them at the dentist's, doctor's, or any other office.

At the end of the day, what can be said about someone who lived 100 years on this earth? There's simply too much to include in witty, short sentences. She loved her life, her family, and Jesus. She loved trees, and having lived through the upper range of the Dust Bowl, always worried about them and animals during hot or dry weather. She loved her dogs and cats and without being the stereotypical cat lady, insisted on their personhood. She would joke that every couple should see Niagara Falls twice - once on their honeymoon and again to see the falls.

That's how it was with her - never too serious, but never too absurd and almost always impractical. She was magic. To ask her ten years ago about living to 100 was met with an "Eesh! Can you imagine?" but then at 100 she was amazed at how it all went by so fast. She joked about what she would tell people her "secret" was but ultimately it boiled down to "her kids, being Norwegian, and the Lord".

Survivors include one daughter, Claire (Larry) Rogers of Aurora; two grandsons, Eric and Leif (Julie) Rogers; and two great-grandsons, Charles Rogers and Luke Rogers. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Abram (Abe) and Herbert (Herb); three sisters, Inez, Ruby, and Kathryn.
WERNET, Marie Belle (I20976)

14604 Marie was born Sept. 21, 1914, on her parents' homestead in Rainbow Township, northwest of Ray. She was the youngest of the six children in her family. Her father, Anton Binde and her mother, Lena Flekstad Binde, had both immigrated from the Trondheim region of Norway.

In her autobiography, compiled when she was 84, she wrote about those growing-up years with her family on the North Dakota prairie, and about her experiences in the community, their one room country school, and their church.

She graduated from Ray High School in 1933. She attended the Interstate Business College in Fargo and following graduation, she was employed at North Dakota State University.

Prior to the start of World War II, she was offered a civil service appointment in Washington, D.C., as a stenographer at the Pentagon where she worked for five years.

Marie married Ernest Qualley May 26, 1945, in Washington, D.C., while he was serving in the Merchant Marines. In 1946, they moved back to their home community of Rainbow Valley where they farmed and raised their five children.

She was a very devoted mother.

She lived on the family farm until Ernest's death in 1988, when she moved to a condominium in Williston. In March, 2003, she moved to Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in Williston, and in September, 2003, she moved to Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, Mont.
Marie died at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, MT on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the loving company of her family. She will be dearly missed.

Marie was a member of the Rainbow Valley Lutheran Church and the ELCW, a member of the Champion Homemakers Club and the Sons of Norway.

Among Marie's favorite memories in her later years were her trips to Norway to visit extended family and the birthplaces of her parents. Her first visit had been with her sister, Agnes, in 1970 and the second visit was in 1993, with her daughter, Sandra.
Preceding Marie in death were her parents; her son, Darrell; her husband, Ernest; three brothers, Tom, Arnold, and Pete; and two sisters, Agnes Asleson and Annie Quale.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters; Ronald and his wife, Kathleen, of Lafayette, Colo., Lyle and his wife, Patti, of Williston, Sandra and her husband, Leonard Hall, of Whitefish, Mont., and Sharlene and her husband, Eric Jonson, of Snohomish, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Deanna (Qualley) Bergum and her husband, Derek, Cheryl (Qualley) Swanson and her husband, Kyle, Erika and Laura Qualley; Andrea, Vanessa, Rachel, and Jana Hall; Kara (Jonson) Smonson and her husband, Adam, Leif and Kindra Jonson; one great-grandson, Tranq Smonson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
