14556 Margaret M. “Peggy” VoPava, 59, of St. Anthony Park, died Dec. 13, 2009. She was born and raised there, later lived for a number of years at  Seal Hi-Rise and most recently lived in a nursing home for some time. She was an active member of St. Cecilia Parish, serving as one of its first Befrienders.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Rosalie, also members of St. Cecilia; sister Theresa Jean; brother Joseph; and fiancé, David Edstrom. She is survived by a sister, Mary VoPava, of Rock Island, Ill.; brother, Martin VoPava (Shelley); and three nephews.
 
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 17, 2009, at Church of St. Cecilia, with interment at Resurrection Cemetery.

14557 Margaret Quickel Smevog of 401-1 Holman Drive died peacefully at home on January 6, 2012 at the age of 87.

Mrs. Smevog was born July 17, 1924 in New Market, Virginia, to the late Michael C. Quickel and Georgia Rhodes Quickel. She graduated from Lincolnton High School and Lenior-Rhyne College.

She retired from teaching high school English with Cumberland County Schools in Fayetteville. After retirement, she served as a summer hostess for several years at Lutheridge Camp and Conference Center. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Conover andattended Shelby Presbyterian Church after moving to Shelby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Richard H. Smevog and her brothers James Quickel, William Quickel, George Quickel and Carroll Quickel.

Mrs. Smevog is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Susan and Sonny Lemus of St. Petersburg, Fla., Becky and Donn Buck of Morehead City, Anne and Charles Langley of Shelby; one son, Jimmy Smevog and Debbie Johnson of Conover; 6 grandchildren, Rick Lemus of Tampa, Fla., Philip and Jodi Buck of Shelby, Kristen and Brady Scheib of Kodiak, Alaska, Thomas and Catherine Couch of Shelby, Anna Langley of Shelby, and Michael and Rachael Smevog of Virginia Beach, Va.; five-great-grandchildren, Eliza Buck, Kyler Scheib, Mallory Scheib, Juliana Smevog and Jocelyn Smevog; sister-in-law Doris Quickel of Rockford, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Shelby Medical Associates and Hospice of Cleveland County for their wonderful care and also to acknowledge the dedication and love of Mrs. Smevog's caregivers - Cynthia Littlejohn, Leanne Clary, Rhonda Collins and Frances Smith.
