Maginnis, Timothy F. 99 Nov. 06, 1913 Feb. 08, 2013
Lake Oswego resident Timothy Fernando Maginnis died on Feb. 8, 2013 at the age of 99. He was born on Nov. 6, 1913 in Glendale, the youngest of eight children of Thomas Francis and Joquina Badrena Maginnis.
He lived a full, happy and healthy life and was proud of the fact he did not need to take any medicine to maintain his health. He graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay in 1931. Tim studied civil engineering at Oregon State College and graduated in 1937. While he was a student at Oregon State, he worked on the construction of the Coos Bay Bridge. He married Alice Kloster on Aug. 10, 1937 in Coos Bay. After graduation from Oregon State, he worked for a construction company building Highway 101 near Cannon Beach and then for a mill near Amboy, Wash., which supplied railroad ties and other lumber to the military during WWII. He became interested in the accounting processes at these firms and studied accounting at night. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1943 while working for the I. D. Wood accounting firm. In 1945, he started his own accounting practice, together with his wife, Alice and, in the early years, taught accounting at University of Portland. It is not surprising that many of his early clients were in the construction or lumber business. In 1968, he formed a partnership with Joseph Carey which continues to this day as Maginnis & Carey LLP where his son, William is now the senior partner. Tim worked full time as a CPA to the age of 70 and part-time for an additional 17 years, at which time he retired from going to the office but avidly followed the stock market, the yearly tax law changes and all that was going on with his family, friends and the world.
From 1989 to 2007, he and Alice owned a condominium in Rancho Mirage, Calif. where they spent their winters, playing golf and tennis and socializing with friends. Prior to that, Tim and Alice owned a condominium at the Embarcadero in Newport and a boat "Alegria" which was large enough for deep sea fishing and many friends were invited to join them on fishing expeditions off the Oregon Coast. Tim was a strong believer in exercise and encouraged others to be active. He was very competitive at tennis, and when that became too strenuous, he took up golf with a passion which he played until he was 97. Tim served in the Oregon National Guard during WWII. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Portland City Club, Multnomah Athletic Club, West Hills Racquet Club, Columbia River Yacht Club, Sunrise Country Club of Rancho Mirage, Calif., Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants and other professional organizations.
Tim's wife, Alice, of 70 years died in 2008 and he lovingly cared for her in the last years of her life. Tim is survived by his four children, Susan, William (wife, Melinda), Robert and Mary; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, which total 21 direct descendants; and many nieces and nephews whom he enjoyed. He is survived by his devoted companion of the last four years, Dorothy Thomas and her family.
Tim's life will be remembered in a private family gathering. Remembrances may be made to University of Portland scholarship program or the Oregon State University engineering school. No flowers, please. | MAGINNIS, Timothy F (I20766)
