Lucille Virginia (Hunt) Johnson, 90, peacefully passed away on January 17. Lucille was a life-long Ellensburg resident, a committed mother and wife, educator, and community volunteer.
Lucille was born on August 20, 1921, to long-time Kittitas Valley residents, Charles and Alice (Phare) Hunt, the oldest of seven children. She enjoyed attending grade school at Thorp Elementary, and the Number 6 School. After graduating from Ellensburg High School she completed an elementary education degree from Central Washington College of Education in 1944. Lucille accepted an emergency war-time contract in 1943 to teach in Ridgefield, WA. At that time an early morning teacher duty was to climb a look-out and watch for enemy warplanes. Lucille returned to teaching in 1958 and taught in the Ellensburg School District for 20 years.
Lucille married Melvin (Swede) Johnson on June 28, 1945 and raised four children:Keith, Anne, Patricia, and Laurie. Family and faith were central to Lucille's life. She loved her role as grandmother. Education was very important and she was so proud that all eight of her grandchildren shared this value. Lucille also enjoyed the annual Family Olympics. Lucille served her First Lutheran Church congregation in several capacities.
Lucille showed great humility, integrity, and kindness in all that she did. She volunteered for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She wrote the senior-interest column for the Daily Record for nearly 25 years. Lucille had been active in her education association, serving as its president, and was later active in the Retired Teachers' Association. Lucille also willingly looked after elderly relatives and regularly visited those family members.
Lucille's last years were spent at Kittitas Valley Health Center. There she exuded a certain radiance and had a smile and good word for all those who cared for her so well. The family is extremely grateful for the very special love and care given Lucille. Special thanks go to KVHC, to Pastor Dennis Hickman for his regular visits, and to Dr. Don Solberg for decades of great care.
Lucille is survived by her children Keith (Janet) Johnson, Poulsbo; Anne Bounds, Yakima; Laurie Johnson, Olympia; son-in-law, Robert Bacon, Vancouver; her eight grandchildren Maren Johnson, Brett Johnson, Jennifer Buster, Kirsten Koetje, Courtney Holbrook, Cari Waldal, Drew Stillman, Bryce Stillman and 14 great grandchildren.
