Iver Watterud, 93, Oldest Pioneer, Dies

Another pioneer of this vicinity passed on to his reward Saturday last. This pioneer was no doubt the oldest in these parts, he being Iver Watterud, who was 93 years of age at the time of his death. In spite of his advanced age, he had been up and around his home until about 10 days prior to his demise, which was caused by the hardening of his arteries, and other complications incidental to old age.

The deceased was born in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Norway, on the 14th day of April, 1846. At the age of 21 years, he came to the United States with his sister and her family. He spent two years in Iowa, and later accompanied the same family in a covered wagon, drawn by oxen, to Norwegian Grove, about 10 miles northeast of Rothsay. The trip took them six weeks. He settled on a piece of land in Norwegian Grove, where he resided for a year, before he was informed that the land in that township had not yet been opened for homesteading, so he came a few miles further south and filed on a homestead in Trondhjem, which has been his home for more than 70 years.

He married Miss Lise Sogn in 1873, and to them were born nine chilcren. His wife died in 1900, and five years later he married Mrs. Anna Olstad, to whom two children were born.

Besides being a successful farmer, Mr. Watterud aided his neighbors and other farmers for miles around in caring for the sick stock and horses, and carried on this practice up to within the past two or_three years.

He is survived by his widow, one brother, three sons and three daughters, as follows: Ole of Columbus, N. Dak.; Mrs. Jens Toso and Mrs. Anna Engens, both of Esmond, N. Dak.; Ingel of Harrison, Idaho; Mrs. Arthur Aas, who resides in the vicinity of the old home, and Mrs. Harold Walter of Pelican Rapids.

All the children, with the exception of Mrs. Engens, are home for the funeral, which is to be held Friday at 1 p. m. from the home, and at 2 o'clock from South Immanuel church, with Rev. H. Bjornson officiating.

There are also three step-children, forty-nine, grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Iver married Lise SOGN about 1875. Lise was born on 19 Apr 1852 in Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway; died on 14 Jun 1900 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
