Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ella Kristine NORDRUM was born on 28 Apr 1883 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin (daughter of Hans G NORDRUM and Marie Amelia JOHNSON); died on 31 Jan 1971 in St. Louis County, Minnesota; was buried on 3 Feb 1971 in Bethany Cemetery, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1971-MN-002653
    • Social Security Number: 474-58-2603 According To Death Certificate

    Notes:

    Both parents born in Norway.

An Ella Nordrum was listed in the 1895 state census as living in LaCrosse as female, born in the U.S. No other Nordrums are listed in LaCrosse. She seems to be living with Antona Hanson but that isn’t clear: it’s simply the name that comes before hers in the census listing.

Apparently caught twice in the 1900 census. Once as a lodger at 222 King Street and once as a servant for the John Rowles family at 214 North 6th Street.

In the 1901-1902 La Crosse city directory she is Miss Ella Nordrum, domestic, 415 S 5th.

Shown as Ella C. in the 1910 census.

In the 1940 census, she was a 56 year-old widow living with her daughter Marion and her family. Ella had a sixth-grade education.

Of Duluth at the time of her daughter Marion’s death.

Died as Ella Christine. According to her obituary in the Duluth newspaper, she died at home at 306 Worth Street in Duluth. (Her death certificate says she died at 4:40 PM at the Chris Jensen Home in Duluth.) She had been a Duluth resident for 80 years. No mention is made in her obituary of her husband. She had 21 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Her cause of death was cancer of the uterus.

Her last name inferred from the death certificates of Gertrude and Marion. Confirmed by the La Crosse birth record. Ella was delivered by a Mrs. Mary Olson, presumably a midwife.

Appears from IGI to have had a brother Arthur born May 9, 1887, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This seems unlikely.

    Birth:
    LACR 100, p. 1102

Ella married Ole Christian ANDERSON, Jr on 10 Aug 1903 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. 1. 2.  Hans G NORDRUM was born about 1850 in Norway; died on 22 Nov 1918 in Scranton, Bowman County, North Dakota; was buried on 27 Nov 1918 in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Laborer according to Ella’s birth record

    Notes:

In the 1888-1889 La Crosse city directory, Hans Nordrum is a laborer and resides at 412 Jackson.

In the 1901-1902 city directory, Hans Nordrum “wks Dr Christensen” and rooms at 119 S Ninth.

In the 1910 census, he may be the 52 year-old widower “working out” as a farm laborer in Scranton Twp, Bowman County, North Dakota.

La Crosse Tribune, November 25, 1918:

Hans Nordrum, a former resident of La Crosse, died at Scranton, N.D., Friday, at the age of 68 years. Surviving are three children, Mrs. O.C. Anderson of Duluth, Gustave J. Nordrum of St. Paul, and Mrs. O.B. Johnson of La Crosse. The body will be brought to La Crosse for burial. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

La Crosse Tribune, November 26, 1918:

Funeral services for Hans Nordrum will be at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. D. Johnson, 1613, Winnebago Street. Rev. O. H. Myhre will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Hans married Marie Amelia JOHNSON. Marie was born in Norway; died in Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Marie Amelia JOHNSON was born in Norway; died in Unknown.

    Notes:

She seems to have divorced Hans and married Henry Mack. In the 1900 census, Nellie is shown as “daughter” of Henry and Mary Mack. In the 1905 census she was a boarder. In the 1900 census, Mary is shown to have had one child, and to have been married for 13 years to Henry. However, Mary Mack is also shown to have come to the U.S. in 1886 which would seem to rule out her being the mother of Ella and Gustave. However, the ELCA church records confirm that she, as Marie Amelia Johnson, was the mother of Gustav and Nellie. Wisconsin Births and Christenings confirms that she was the mother of Ella.

In the 1901-1902 La Crosse city directory, Henry Mack “wks S&K Mfg Co” and resides at 1631 Winnebago.

Marie A Mack (1858-1936) and Henry Mack (1854-1932) are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
