    Notes:

In the 1865 Norwegian census he is single and living with his parents and siblings on the Brænna farm in Jevnaker. His occupation is skrædder (tailor). In that census, although his mother’s birthplace is Flo parish, Hallingdal, his birthplace is Jevnaker.

The Jevnaker out-migration register shows Hans Andersen Vangseje, 22½, Gjertrud Jensdatter, 28, and Andrine Hansdatter, 1, emigrating to Amerika in April of 1868. Leaving at the same time, and the previous entry in the register, is Jens Torgerson Vangseje, 50, Ingeborg Andersdatter, 52, Torger Jensen, 26, Anders Jensen, 18, Iver Jensen, 14, and Johan Jensen, 12.

Jens and Ingeborg were living in Marion Twp, Clayton County, Iowa (Strawberry Point post office) in the 1870 census. Living with them were Ever, 16, and John, 14, as well as Hans (age 22) and Julia (age 25) Anderson and their infant son Anders.

In the 1875 Minnesota census, he is 29 year-old Hans Anderson living in Elizabeth Twp, Otter Tail County. Living with him is his 31 year-old wife Castro, and their four children: Anton, 6, Mary, 4, James, 2, and Iver O., 0. The three older children were born in Iowa, Iver was born in Minnesota.

In the 1880 census, he, as Hans Anderson Toso, lives with his family in Trondhjem Twp, Otter Tail County. Next door on one side is the Torger Toso family. On the other side is the Jens T. Toso family. Hans’s family consists of himself, 30, his wife Gertrude, 38, Anton, 11, Maria, 9, Jens, 7, Ivar, 5, Oline, 2, and Josephine, 3 months.

In the 1885 state census, he and his family live in Rothsay, Trondhjem Twp. The household consists of Hans A Tosø, 36, his wife, identified only as J, 43, Anton, 11, Maria, 14, Jens, 12, Iver, 9, Oline, 7, Otto, no age shown. Also living with him are his father, Anders Hanson, 66, and Lise Tosø, 55.

In the 1900 census, he and his family live in Trondhjem Twp, Otter Tail County. Living with him and Gertrude at that time were Oline and Otto as well as Lizzie, “step-mother”, a widow born in Norway in May, 1832. Hans and Gertrude came to the U.S. in 1869. Lizzie came to the U.S. in 1881.

Hans married Gjertrud Jensdatter TOSO on 29 Dec 1866 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. Gjertrud (daughter of Jens Torgerson TOSO and Ingeborg Andersdatter GRYMYR) was born on 16 May 1841 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway; died on 28 Oct 1928 in Esmond, Benson County, North Dakota; was buried in Bethany Cemetery, Benson County, North Dakota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Gjertrud Jensdatter TOSO was born on 16 May 1841 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway (daughter of Jens Torgerson TOSO and Ingeborg Andersdatter GRYMYR); died on 28 Oct 1928 in Esmond, Benson County, North Dakota; was buried in Bethany Cemetery, Benson County, North Dakota.

    Notes:

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, she is shown as having had 10 children, 6 still living. In 1910, she is widowed and living with her son Jens and family in North Dakota.

Some sources have her birth in Gran, Hadaland. That is inconsistent with the 1865 Norwegian census.

Gertrude lives in Isabel Twp, Benson County, North Dakota, in the 1920 census. She is a widow and lives on a farm adjoining her sons Jens and Iver.

    Notes:

According to Marilee, Anders took the surname Toso from a glassblower that he apprenticed under while in Norway. His original farm in Otter Tail County is still in the family.

Some sources say he was born in Hallingdal, Buskerud.

In the 1865 census, Anders and family lived on the Brænna farm (apparently not far from the Nordthosø farm of Jens Torgerson) in Jevnaker, Oppland. The family consisted of Anders Hansen, husmand med jord (tenant farmer with some land), b. 1821 in Jevnaker, Randi Olsdatter, b. 1821 in Flo, Hallingdal, and their three sons, all born in Jevnaker: Hans Andersen, skrædder (tailor), b. 1845, Ole Andersen, b. 1851, and Martin Andersen, b. 1861.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 7 Jun 1818, Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

He and his family lived in the Nordthosø farm in Jevnaker in the 1865 census. The family consisted of Jens Thorgersen “Smed Husmand med Jord” (blacksmith and tenant farmer with some land), b. 1820, his wife Ingeborg Andersdatter, b. 1816, and their five children: Gjertrud Jensdatter (“Hjelper Forældrene” - assists parents), b. 1840, Thorger Jensen (“Smed” - blacksmith), b. 1843, Anders Jensen, b. 1850, Iver Jensen, b. 1855, and Johan Jensen, b. 1857. Everyone except Ingeborg was born in Jevnaker. She was born in Gran.

In the 1880 census, he was Jens T. Toso living with his wife Ingeborg and sons Iver and Johan in Norwegian Grove Twp in Otter Tail County. Also living with the family is Anders Toso, age 57, “boarder.” Living next door is Hans Anderson Toso, age 30, his wife Gertrude, 38, and their children Anton, 11, Maria, 9, Jens, 7, Ivar, 5, Oline, 2, and Josephine, 3 months. Presumably, Gertrude is Jens and Ingeborg’s daughter. Hans Anderson may be the Hans Andersen living on the nearby Brænna farm in the 1865 Norwegian census.

In the 1900 census he is an 82 year-old widower living with son Iver and family.

Jens married Ingeborg Andersdatter GRYMYR on 9 Jan 1841 in Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. Ingeborg (daughter of Anders Gudmundsen GRYNMYR and Gjertrude Jensdatter) was born on 9 Dec 1816 in Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway; died on 29 Aug 1897 in Rothsay, Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried in South Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rothsay, Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
