  1. 2.  John ORTH was born on 13 Dec 1887 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; died on 30 Jul 1933 in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California.

    Notes:

In the 1895 Minnesota census, he lived in Minneapolis in a complicated household headed by what must be his grandmother, Mary Orth.

In the 1900 census, he lived in Minneapolis in a complicated household on Marshall Street in northeast Minneapolis. It seems to be headed by his grandmother, Mary Orth.

In the 1905 state census, he is probably the 17 year-old John Orth who is a student in Collegeville, Stearns County, Minnesota, probably at St. John’s University.

His occupation was bookkeeper according to his children’s birth certificates. The family lived at 5300 Aldrich Avenue when Alpha was born and 2624 Dupont Avenue S. when Florence was born.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, a John Orth, bookkeeper, lived at 801 West 53rd Street.

In between, at the time of the 1910 census, John, Eunice, and Alpha were living in Missoula, Montana. John was a bookkeeper at a factory. Both of John’s parents had been born in Minnesota.

When he registered for the draft in May of 1917, he did so in Seattle where he was a “worker in fruit.” He had been born on December 13, 1887, in Minneapolis. He said that he was married but had no wife or child under 12 who was solely dependent upon him. He was described as tall and slender with brown eyes and brown hair.

In the 1920 census, there was a divorced John Orth, age 32, living with Alfred H Orth in Seattle. John was a stenographer for the railroad.

In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, there was another John Orth, known as John Martin Orth, living in California. That John M Orth was the same age, roughly, as Eunice’s first husband, and had also been born in Minnesota. That John had a daughter Ruth, born in about 1912, and a wife Ida. In the 1930 census, that John M Orth was living with Ida and Ruth in Berkeley, California, where he was a shoe salesman. John was not a veteran and claimed that his mother had been born in Maine. That John M is probably the John Orth who died in Berkeley in Alameda County in March of 1977. That John was born on 8 Sep 1887.
