  1. 2.  Thomas Conrad PONATH was born on 22 Nov 1907; died on 26 May 1980.

Thomas married Claudia Josephine JESTIN on 6 Mar 1943 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. Claudia (daughter of Hippolite (Paul) JESTIN and Margaret Julia QUAID) was born on 4 Jul 1919 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; died on 15 Jun 2021 in Saskatchewan, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Claudia Josephine JESTIN was born on 4 Jul 1919 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada (daughter of Hippolite (Paul) JESTIN and Margaret Julia QUAID); died on 15 Jun 2021 in Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

Claudia Josephine Jestin was born to Hypolite (Paul) and Margaret (Quaid) Jestin July 4, 1919 at Watson Hospital. Mom’s first home was a log granary, the only building on their homestead section in Kermaria.

Mom was the oldest of four. Claudia, Robert, John and Margaret (then known as Babe). The family moved to Naicam as the children got older. Mom fell in love with Tom Ponath, and married during wartime in Regina, March 6, 1943. After the war, Mom and Dad purchased the Ponath homestead from his family and they started their own family: Linda, born 1947, Lyle Thomas, 1951 and Donna Lee 1957.

Claudia was very active in the Naicam community, volunteering with the Catholic Women’s League, Naicam’s Music Festival, Naicam’s Golf Course and Communities in Bloom.
Mom had many talents as well. She rode horses, square danced, curled, (bonspieled in particular!), sewed her own clothes and ours, embroidered many great works, crocheted, played piano, gardened, cross stitched and knit. Mom owned and operated the Sears Catalogue sales office in Naicam for many years, which in those days, was a very active franchise.

Tom passed in 1980 and Mom married John Knutson. Together they traveled the world. They were able to square dance in many of the countries they visited. They also square danced at the opening of the Olympics in Calgary 1988.

Mom and John spent winters in their home in Arizona. After John passed, Mom and Arizona neighbor Dan Moyer become special friends. Dan being from Iowa, would spend summers in Naicam and Mom would spend winters in Iowa and sometimes with Donna and Don in Arizona.

Claudia moved to Churchview Lodge 2012. Sadly Mom’s vision slowly went through Macular Degeneration. When her son Lyle passed, and after a bout of illness, Mom decided Parkland would be a good place to spend the rest of her time here on Earth.

Claudia was predeceased by her mother Margaret, father Paul, husband Thomas Ponath, brothers Robert Jestin and John Jestin (Gloria), husband John Knutson, son Lyle Thomas Ponath, great friend Daniel Moyer and recently brother-in-law Doug Mowat.

Claudia is survived by her sister Margaret Mowat, sister-in-law Margaret Jestin, daughter Linda Ponath, granddaughter Lana Lavoie (Shaun Larkin), great grandchildren Luke and Charles, granddaughter Janine Lavoie Harding (James Harding) great grandchildren Thomas, Olivya and Isabelle, daughter-in-law Terry Ponath, granddaughter Nicole and great granddaughter Kyra, grandson Michael (Ellen Elgersma), great grandsons Jesse and Bennett and daughter Donna (Don Rumberger). Claudia had many nieces and nephews and always remembered when their birthdays were and who they married. Her memory was remarkable.

    Notes:

Came to this country in 1883 according to Jan.

In the 1889-91 Minneapolis city directory, John J Quaid, 357 Lincoln, is a finisher with the Minneapolis Sash and Door Company.

Became a “naturalised” citizen of Canada in Kermaria, Saskatchewan, on December 15th, 1914.

John married Nanny Emma Rebekka (Annie Rebecka) LUNDBERG on 23 Feb 1896 in Foreston, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. Nanny (daughter of Carl Gustaf (Charley) LUNDBERG and Britta Maria (Mary Or Mare) SVENSDOTTER) was born on 10 May 1879 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden; died on 3 Feb 1936 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. 4. 15.  Nanny Emma Rebekka (Annie Rebecka) LUNDBERG was born on 10 May 1879 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden (daughter of Carl Gustaf (Charley) LUNDBERG and Britta Maria (Mary Or Mare) SVENSDOTTER); died on 3 Feb 1936 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

    Born in Berget, Berghem Sodregård.

The Anbytartforum entry for her indicates that her birth year was 1879. So does the Kånna 1877-1881 Household Examination (p.20).

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris.

She and her husband and children were living at 709 Jackson Street in Minneapolis at the time of the 1900 census. Annie had had two children, both still living (Mary Katherine and Margaret Julia).

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, the family was living with the rest of the Quaids in Foreston. John was a painter, had been in Minnesota for 21-and-a-half years and had been in Foreston for 5-and-a-half years. That may be incorrect: Josephine and the three girls had been in Foreston for only 3 years and 9 months.

In the 1910 census, the family was living on a farm that they owned with mortgage in Milaca Township. The family consisted of John J., 40, Annie R., 38, Mary K., 13, Margaret J., 10, and Annie J., 7. Annie is shown as having had 6 children, only the still living. (On the day the census-taker appeared at their farm, Annie would have been 8 months pregnant and two weeks away from giving birth to her 7th child.) Not too far was the farm of her father and his 2nd wife.

Lived in Naicam, Saskatchewan. In a Naicam history, Claudia Ponath contributed this on the Quaids:

“Mr. and Mrs. John J. Quaid and family came by train to Watson from Foreston, Minnesota, U.S.A., homesteading in the Byng District in approximately 1910. A year later, Mrs. Quaid’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Lundberg, settled on the same quarter with them. Mr. Quaid was one of the first Municipal Councillors and was one of the first who initiative to build a school so was elected to the school board the first year. Their family consisted of three daughters and one son - Mary, Margaret, Josephine, and Francis.”

Could not find the Quaids in the 1911 Canadian census.

Roy lists her birth location as Bergham Sodregard Berget, Sweden.

Terry says: “Incidentally, the Quaid house was the original town jail in Naicam. Very few people know that little fact. I was told by a previous owner that the walls are about two feet thick as he had tried to drill through it for some reason.”

    Her obituary:

Mrs. J. J. Quaid Laid to Rest

The death of Mrs. J. J. Quaid occurred at her home early Monday morning, February 3rd. Mrs. Quaid had been in ill health for some time but on Sunday suddenly took a turn for the worse and quietly passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. The many friends are comforted in the thought that the family was at her bedside when the end came.

Mrs. Quaid was 57 years old and was born in Sweden. She immigrated to the United States and later married J. J. Quaid. They came to Canada 23 years ago and settled on a homestead in the Byng district west of Naicam. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, and one son, Mrs. R. (Dick) Sharp, Mrs. Paul Jestin, Mrs. Fred Jestin, all of Byng district and Francis at home.

The funeral service was held at the home by Rev. Fr. Chrysostom. Burial took place in the municipal cemetery.

Pall bearers were Messrs. Fred Jestin, Paul Jestin, Dick Sharp, and Francis Quaid.
