I did some checking and here is what I found: Dad's name was Grover Cleveland Banks and Mom's was Martha Hatton. I believe her middle name was Jane but I'm not sure.

I checked with Opal as she has dad's bible with some information. Dad was born April 30, 1884 in Kentucky (Campton) I believe. Mom was born July 10, 1880.

Dad passed away April 30, 1965. Mom passed away December 30, 1967.

They were married February 4, 1902.

They left Kentucky and arrived in Wisconsin in 1911, from there they went to Oklahoma and then came to Minnesota in 1917. They arrived in Aitkin and then settled in Ironton, Minnesota where he worked in the mines before buying a farm in Ross Lake Township, Minnesota.

Children from this union were Dave Crocket, Frank, Rose, Henry, Elizabeth and Mary (twins), Hafed (Jack), Hannah, Sara (myself) William (Bill) and Dixie.

I hope this will answer some of your questions. If I find any more information I will send it to you. I will be leaving Wednesday for the cities and then flying out to Arizona on Friday (March 25) with Ruth and Jerry. We will be coming back on April 4. I have been quite well this winter but not so good the last week as I fell and bruised my knee and then sprained my ankle so it has curbed my getting around some.

Hope this finds you all in good health and if you see Helen and Max say hello for me. Sara

    Notes:

Both of her parents were born in Kentucky. A 1900 census entry for Martha Hatton, daughter of William Hatton in Wolfe County, shows her as being born in July of 1882. Other sources say 1883.

The informant for her death certificate was her son Hafed of Aitkin. She died of pneumonia complicated by emphysema. Her “usual residence” was Lt. Pine Rt., Aitkin.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  David BANKS was born about 1840 in Kentucky; died on 28 Feb 1915 in Wolfe County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Definitely the father of Manerva. According to her birth record, he was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

His middle initial was C according to the death certificate of his son Grover.

In the 1910 census, a 70 year-old David Banks “sen” (for Sr.?) lived in Holly Creek with his 18 year-old son Smalley. Jack Watkins was his next-door neighbor. Living with David and Smalley were two boarders, William, 16, and Ettie Taylor, 20. David Banks was shown as married for 57 years.

A David Banks, a widower “about 76” years old and born in Kentucky to David Banks and Nancy Bailey, died in Wolfe County on 28 February 1915. The informant for his death certificate was Jack Wadkins of Vortex in Wolfe County.

The Kentucky marriage records show a 28 year-old David McDaniel of Floyd County marrying a 22 year-old Hannah Banks of Wolfe County in Wolfe County on 4 June 1874.

David married Hannah BANKS. Hannah was born in Jun 1855 in Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Hannah BANKS was born in Jun 1855 in Kentucky.

    Notes:

According to Manerva’s birth record, Hanah was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

In the 1880 census she is shown as Hanah Banks, 25, living without a husband, and shown as divorced or widowed, in Wolfe County, Kentucky. She has 2 children: son Adison E., 3, and daughter Minervia J., 1. She is shown as “keeping house”

Widowed at the time of the 1900 census (June 16th or 20th). In that census, she and her family were living in Holly Voting Precinct #5, Wolfe County, Kentucky. The family consisted of Hannah, a 55-year-old widow born in June, 1855, her son Grover C., a 16-year old single boy born in April of 1884, another son Johnnie, 13, born in June 1886, and another son, Smallie, 7, born in May, 1893. Also living with the family was a 28-year-old boarder named Dave Miles. Living next door was 63 year old Dave Banks who had two boarders living with him: a 6 year old boy named Bill Taylor and 13-year-old Ettie Mullins. Other than Hannah, everyone and his or her parents were born in Kentucky. Hannah’s father was born in North Carolina. (Dave Miles’s parents were born in Virginia.) Hannah is shown as having borne 7 children, 4 still living. Hannah is a farmer who owns her farm although it is mortgaged.

Reasonably consistent with this is the following possibility. A Hannah Hays, a married housewife, died on 10 Feb 1938 in Breathitt County which is adjacent to Wolfe County. Hannah Hays was shown as born on 7 Jun 1855 in Wolfe County to Loss John Banks and Hannah Watkins, both of North Carolina. This information was provided by Vivian King of Pence, Kentucky. Hannah died of apoplexy. The undertaker was John W. Banks of Pence. In the 1860 census, there is a John (b. N. Carolina), 51, and Hannah Banks, 40, living in Morgan County, Kentucky. One of their children is Hannah, age 6.

A Hannah Banks also died in Breathitt County on 20 Dec 1913 at the age of 77.

    Children:
    1. Adison E was born about 1877 in Kentucky.
    2. Manerva J was born on 20 Sep 1878 in Wolfe County, Kentucky.
    3. 6. Grover Cleveland BANKS was born on 30 Apr 1884 in Kentucky; died on 24 Apr 1965 in Aitkin County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Apr 1965 in Bennettville Cemetery, Hazelton Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.
    4. Johnnie BANKS was born in Jun 1886 in Kentucky.
    5. Smallie BANKS was born on 7 May 1892 in Kentucky; died on 9 Jun 1967 in Fayette County, Kentucky.

  3. 14.  William F HATTON was born in May 1840 in Kentucky (son of William HATTON and Betsy BANKS).

    Notes:

In the 1870 census (July 22nd), William F. Hatton and family were living in Precinct No. 3, Wolfe County. The family consisted of William F., 26, his wife Elizabeth, 23, and their children Benjamin F., 9, and William, 3. Neither William F. nor Elizabeth can read or write.

In the 1880 census (June 2nd), William F. Hatten and his family live in the 5th precinct of Wolfe County. There are several other Bankses and Hattons on the same census page. William’s family consists of himself, 39, Lizzie, 34, William, 13, Hiram E., 9, John A., 6, Green B., 4, and Sarah E., 10 months.

His first name an initial are not very clear in the 1900 census. At that time (June 1st), this person and his family were living on a farm in the 8th Magisterial District, Antioch, Wolfe County, Kentucky.

In the 1910 census, he and his wife and 34 year-old son Greenbery live in Holly Creek in Wolfe County. William is 71 and Elizabeth is 70. None of the three in the household can read or write. Their son Augustus lives next door.

Called Billey Hatton on his son Hiram’s death certificate.

An Ancestry tree has his name as William F. Hatton born in Morgan, Kentucky, between 1841 and 1844. That source claims he resided in Antioch, Wolfe County, in 1900 and in Holly Creek, Wolfe County, in 1910.

William married Elizabeth BANKS about 1859. Elizabeth was born in Aug 1842 in Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Elizabeth BANKS was born in Aug 1842 in Kentucky.

    Notes:

According to the 1900 census, seems to have had 9 children, 6 still living but the numbers are not clear. Those numbers are 11 and 8 in the 1910 census.

In the 1920 census, she is a 77 year-old widow living with her daughter Sarah’s family in Holly Creek, Wolfe County. Her 42 year-old son Green B. also lives with her.

More than one family tree on Ancestry.com has Martha Jane’s mother as Martha Frances Bush, b. 1856 in Grassy, Morgan County, Kentucky, and dying 4 May 1901 in Powell County.

    Children:
    1. Benjamin F HATTON was born about 1861 in Kentucky.
    2. William HATTON was born about 1867 in Wolfe County, Kentucky; died on 31 Mar 1948 in Letcher County, Kentucky.
    3. Hiram Edward HATTON was born about 1871 in Wolfe County, Kentucky; died on 19 Dec 1936 in Breathitt County, Kentucky; was buried on 21 Dec 1936.
    4. John HATTON was born about 1874 in Kentucky.

    9. Augustus HATTON was born in Jan 1885 in Kentucky.
    10. Ida BANKS was born in Apr 1896 in Kentucky; died in Unknown.
