  1. 2.  Sigurd Kristofferson (Syver C) SOINE was born on 26 Oct 1842 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (son of Christopher Larssen SØYNE and Anne Sjugurdsdatter LAJORD); died on 11 Jul 1874 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

    Born in Søyne 50/, øvre.

He came to America with his family in 1853. He was 12 years old when his parents died. Syver was taken in by an English family, where he learned to speak English, and he eventually forgot Norwegian. He joined the Union Army on August 22, 1862; he was 20 years old. He was in Company D of the 10th Regiment of the Minnesota Volunteers. He fought at Gettysburgh with Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea. Syver enlisted under the name of Chrstopherson. After the war Lars, Syver, and Ole reunited in Goodhue County and there Syver met and married Sonneva Ellingboe in 1867. They had 3 sons. They moved to Wang township in Renville County. Syver was killed by a runaway, while haying in July 1874, and he is buried in a Wang cemetery.

The Union Army was recruiting in Minnesota in the summer of 1862 when Sever Christopherson enlisted as a private in the 10th Minn. Volunteers from Warsaw, Rice Co. The Regiment, under Col. James H. Baker, had orders to travel to New York and then to the Gulf via steamer; but before recruitment was complete the Sioux Indians in western Minnesota began misbehaving and the Regiment was sent to bolster other troops fighting around New Um, Nicollet Co. The captured Indians were sent to Mankato army post where they were courtmartialed and executed in February of 1863.

The winter of 1862/1863, the Regiment spent doing guard duty on the frontier, building stockades, and training. In camp at Henderson until February when they were ordered to Mankato to participate in the execution of the Sioux Indians.

In the summer of 1863, the 10th Minn., and other regiments took the offensive against the Indians, beat them up, and chased them across the Missouri River. On both campaigns Sever marched through the area where he would later homestead (in Renville County), but which was an Indian land in 1863 and 1863.

On the 18th of September 1863, orders arrived at Ft. Snelling, which was the main army post in the Minn. District (old Ft. Snelling is located across the river from Minneapolis and south of St. Paul) for the 10th to report to St. Louis, Mo. And they traveled by boat to Dunleith, by rail to St. Louis. There the Regiment did garrison and provost duty as there were several military prisons for prisoners of war, for "stragglers" (a euphemism for deserters who got caught), 5 forts and many supply warehouses. It was at St. Louis that Col. Phelps resigned and Capt. C.L. Davis took command of Co. D.

On April 22, 1864, the 10th Minn. left for Columbus, Kentucky, and on June 19, 1864 they were sent to Memphis, Tenn. On July 13, 1864 the Rebels attacked them at Tupelo Hill, under Gen. Bedford Forrest who was protecting Gen. Hood's withdrawal. Gen. Forrest withdrew in an orderly fashion and the 10th pressed after him. Through the fall, the unit had several skirmishes in pursuit and harassment of the Rebels.

On Dec. 15 and 16, 1864, the 10th and other units assaulted Gen. Hood's earthworks and the last battle of Nashville ensued. After taking casualties, the 10th succeeded in driving out an exhausted Confederate Army. The 10th had the task of pressing on Hood's rear, which sent them up against their old foe, Gen. Bedford Forrest. The 10th pushed on to Mobile Bay participating in the battle at Spanish Fort.

The war was over and the 10th returned to Ft. Snelling via river steamer and were formally mustered out of the Union Army on August 19, 1865.

That's what Sever's unit was doing from 1862 to 1865, but what Sever was doing is another matter. His war records show that he was present at all of the Indian Wars, and that he went south from Ft. Snelling to St. Louis. However, his records show that in May of 1864 he was in the Post Hospital in Columbus, Ky. because of sickness, not specified. Half the the casualties in the Civil War died of illnesses such as typhoid smallpox, dysentery, and just plain old pneumonia. His records say he was ill through the fall of 1864/1865, and that he was forwarded to Ft. Snelling the middle of Aug. 1864 and was ill until Oct. 20th when he resumed his duties at Ft. Snelling.

His papers say that Sever was 20 years old when he enlisted, that he was 5 ft, 9 inches, his eyes- gray, his hair and complexion -light. Sever Christopherson appears on the official roster of Company D.

Sigurd married Synneva Trondsdotter ELLINGBØE on 6 Jul 1867 in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Synneva (daughter of Trond Iversson ELLINGBØE (OPDAL, UVDAL) and Kjersti Helgesdotter KJERSTEIN) was born on 29 Jul 1846 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 17 Feb 1929 in Renville County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Synneva Trondsdotter ELLINGBØE was born on 29 Jul 1846 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (daughter of Trond Iversson ELLINGBØE (OPDAL, UVDAL) and Kjersti Helgesdotter KJERSTEIN); died on 17 Feb 1929 in Renville County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1929-MN-012894
    • Baptism: 6 Sep 1846, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

    Or Synnøve.

Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862.

Synnøve Trondsdtr died in Wang township, Renville County, on 17 Feb 1929. She emigrated in 1862 to the USA. She and Syver had 3 children together and moved to Renville County. After Syver's death in 1874 she moved back to Goodhue County with her 3 sons. In 1877 she married Ole G. Loe and they had 3 children, Sever, Gilbert and Christine. They then moved back to the homestead in Renville county, where she lived until she died in 1929.

Not in Minnesota in the 1870 census.

In the 1880 census, Ole G., 32, and Soneva, 33, were living in Wang Township, Renville County. Their children were Christ, 12, Thrond, 9, Iver, 6, Sever, 2, and Marit, age 5 months and born in January.

In the 1900 census, Trond Ellingboe, 87 (born Feb 1813) and widowed, was living with his daughter, Synneva Loe’s family in Wang Township. Synneva, age 53 (born Jul 1846), was married 23 years to Ole Loe, age 52 (born January of 1848). Synneva had borne 11 children, 6 still living. Their children at home at the time were Syver, 22 (born Sept 1877), Kirsti, 18 (born Mar 1882), and Gudbrand, 13 (born Oct 1886). Ole owned the farm. Ole had emigrated from Norway in 1872, Trond and Synneva in 1862. Living next door was Ivar Soine and family, Synneva’s son from her first marriage.

In the 1910 census, Ole G., age 62, and “Soneva”, age 63, were living in Wang Township of Renville County with their son Gilbert O., age 23 (who was listed as head of the household), and their daughter, Christine, 28. Synneve and Ole are shown to have been married for 33 years although the “M1” next to Ole and the “M2” next to Synneva may mean that Ole was Synneva’s 2nd husband. Synneva has had 11 children, 6 still living, although this entry is erroneously shown for the single Christine. Next door, also a head of household, is Sever O. Loe, 32, single.

Ole G. and Soneva were living with Sever in Wang in the 1920 census. Sever may have been widowed at this point: the census form is not clear.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Christopher Larssen SØYNE was born in 1799 in Norway (son of Lars Gudbrandsen ØYLO and Marit Olsdatter HEMSING); died in 1853 in Michigan.

    Notes:

Shown as Christopher Larssen Heen on Lars’s birth record in the Vang church book. Traci’s tree refers to him as Kristoffer L Haenseiga.

In Jim’s Valdres Slekt tree, he is Christopher Larsen Heenseiga Søyne, #I11511.

    Jim’s notes: For a time he was a postman. Born on Hensbakka and took over as a tenant farmer from his father until 1833, when he became a tenant farmer on Øvre Søyne. from 1833-1848. Left for America in 1853 with wife and five children on the "Olave Kyrre." In the church book emigrant list, his name was "Soyne," but he used the surname "Hen" or "Heen" after immigration. Included in his household in the emigration list was a servant, Marit Håvardsdatter Lajord ( his wife’s niece, #23240), whom he married after his first wife's death. {Which would not seem to be possible unless there was a fair amount of time between his wife’s death and his death which are supposedly in the same year.}

Traci’s tree has him dying in Michigan in 1853. This makes sense from the notes for Sigurd.

Christopher Larssen Söine, 52, and his wife Anne Syversdatter, 49, emigrated from Vang on 12 March 1853 with their children Lars, 23, Anne, 20, Marith, 17, Syver, 11, and Ole, 10. Apparently traveling with them was a Marith something (maybe Klausdatter) Lajord, 23.

Christopher married Anne Sjugurdsdatter LAJORD on 1 Apr 1830 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Anne (daughter of Sjugurd Madsson LAJORD and Anne Madsdatter MYHRE) was born in 1805 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1853 in Michigan. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Anne Sjugurdsdatter LAJORD was born in 1805 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (daughter of Sjugurd Madsson LAJORD and Anne Madsdatter MYHRE); died in 1853 in Michigan.

    Notes:

    Or Anna Syversdatter.

Greg Fearon says that she died in Michigan of diphtheria with her husband and their daughter Marith.

    Notes:

Trond had been a farmer at Sygarde, Uvdal (gnr. 2/2) from 1833 to 1850. He took over the farm Bokkadn, i Bøkko, N. Ellingbø (now gnr. 33/3) in the Spring of 1850 when the previous owner, Jon Øysteinsson Ellingbø (Bø), emigrated to America with his family. Trond acquired the name Ellingbøe with the farm and kept it when he emigrated with his wife and 8 children (plus 2 granddaughters) in the spring (22 March) of 1862. Trond sold Bøkko to Knut Iversson Eltun on 25 April 1868 for 500 spd. It was said that Embrik and Helge Ellingbøe bought Bøkko from Trond and then sold half to Knut, and that Jon Endresson and Torstein, Helge's sons, each took over half of the remaining part (i.e., 1/4 part each). Most of the information after emigration of Trond and Kjersti was obtained from Lee Ann Ellingboe Randall.

He may be the Thomas Thompson, 56, living in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, in the 1870 census. The household consisted of Thomas, 56, Calista, 53, May 27, Ever 27, Andrew, 17, Betsey, 16, Ada, 12, Thomas, 11, and Betsey, 6. Only the younger Betsey was born in Minnesota. Next door was Torger Thompson with son Thomas, 6, and daughter Sarah, 3, both children born in Minnesota.

Trond settled in Renville County in 1871. According to the History of Renville County:

“Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 {presumably of Wang Twp} in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life.”

Land records show that the Benson land office issued Thrond I Ellingboe a 120 acre homestead on 3 Jun 1884. The land description is as follows:

    1 S½SW 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4
    2 SWSE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4

In the 1880 census. Trond, age 66, was a farmer in Wang Township of Renville County. He lived with his wife, Kjirsti, age 64, and their son Thrond, age 22. A few farms away lived another of Trond’s sons, Andris (A. T.).

In the 1900 census, Trond, 87 (born Feb 1813) and widowed, was living with his daughter, Synneva Loe’s family in Wang Township.

From the Wang Township section of the History of Renville County:”Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life. He died at the age of 89 years.”

    Birth:
