    In the 1940 census, she and her husband John Stapleton, a trucker, and daughter Jacqueline lived with her parents in St. Paul. Marilyn was a high school graduate. John had had two years of college. In 1935, he had lived in Cloquet in Carlton County, Minnesota.

    Her obit in the 31 July 2005 edition of the Northwest Arkansas Times:

    FAYETTEVILLE Marilyn E. Paynter, 89, of Fayetteville died Saturday in Fayetteville. She was born July 15, 1916, in Northfield, Minn., to Thomas O. and Grace Thorson Ellingboe.

    She was a homemaker.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard K. Paynter; and a grandson.

    Survivors include one son, Scott Paynter of Red Wing, Minn.; one daughter, Jackie Costello of Fayetteville; sisters, Nona Hoffman of Ramona, Calif., and Betty Trumper of Minneapolis, Minn.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

    Memorial service will be held at a later date.

    Despite the obit, Marilyn had more than two grandchildren at the time she died.

He is short and of medium build with dark blue eyes and light brown hair.

    In the 1921 Northfield directory, his address is 109 S. Division and he is a clerk with Ellingboe Bros.

    In the 1927 St. Paul city directory, he is a salesman for Maurice L Rothschild & Co. He lives at 183 S Chatsworth.

    In the 1929 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, the notation for him in the Northfield section is Ellingboe, Thos O, moved to St. Paul.

    In the 1929 St. Paul city directory, he is a salesman for Maurice L Rothschild & Co. He lives at 995 Linwood Place.

    In the 1930 census, Thomas and his family live in St. Paul. He is 35 and a salesman in a clothing store.

    The 1930 city directory for St. Paul indicates that Thomas Ellingboe, a salesman for Maurice L. Rothschild & Company, and his wife, Grace Ellingboe, resided at 995 West Linwood Avenue. That house was built in 1892. The building is a 1 3/4 story, three bedroom, one bathroom, one half-bathroom, 1449 square foot, frame house, with a detached garage.

    In the 1931 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He and Grace live at 34 S Lexington Parkway.

    In the 1935 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He and Grace live at 955 Lombard.

    In the 1937 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He lives at 1049 Goodrich, apartment C. Grace isn’t included in his listing.

    In the 1940 census, he and Grace and Wenonah live in St. Paul at 1838 Laurel, a rented residence. Thomas and Grace each had two years of high school. He was a salesman in a retail clothing store and had earned $1920 in 1939. Living with them was their daughter Marilyn and her husband and daughter.

    In the 1941 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He lives on a rural postal delivery route.

    Their rural Ramsey County home, described as “at Labore Road and Edgerton Street” had a fire in April of 1945. The 3:30 a.m. fire had been discovered by Grace’s brother Lawrence who was staying with the Ellingboes while serving on a jury in St. Paul.

    In November of 1946, he was a passenger in, and the owner of, a car driven by his daughter Marilyn Stapleton (who would have been pregnant at the time and married to Howard Paynter) which was involved in a collision with a car owned and driven by Roy D. Guerin. Marilyn’s daughter Jacqueline was also a passenger in the car. The damages to the vehicles, and injuries to the occupants of those vehicles, while apparently minor, were the subject of a lawsuit in which Thomas was the plaintiff. The case was of some significance because it resulted in conflicting verdicts arising from a questionable instruction to the jury and had to be resolved on appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1949.

    In the 1948 and 1950 St. Paul city directories, he is still a salesman with Rothschild. He and Grace live on rural delivery route 7.

    In the 1950 census, he and Grace live in something Canada in Ramsey County. He is a salesman in a retail clothing store.

    In the 1956 and 1959 directories of the St. Paul suburbs, he is still a salesman for Rothschild. He and Grace live at 2827 Edgerton in Little Canada.

    The birth year on his draft registration was 1893. His birth date on his death certificate is July 30, 1894, which is consistent with the ages shown for him in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

Dec 1886), daughter Josephine O. (b. Feb 1889), Adolph A. (b. July 1892), and son Thomas A. (b. July 1894 or 1895). Ole and Bertha Strand live next door and son John M. Ellingboe lives on the other side of Ole and Bertha.

    John J. and Emma Ellingboe.  John J. Ellingboe, III, married Ambjor “Emma” Strand about 1874.  John was the son of John O. Ellingboe, II, and Margrete Klokergaarden, natives of Norway who immigrated to near Stoughton, WI, about 1849.  Emma was the daughter of Ole and Berit Strand.  Ole and Berit immigrated from Vang, Norway, when Emma was 8 years old, about 1865, to near Stoughton, WI.  John J. and Emma farmed in Wisconsin about 10 years before moving to Northfield.  At Northfield, John J. was a farmer, in addition he was a postal carrier for 20 years and worked in his son’s clothing store.  John J. and Emma had a family of:  John Morris, married Elese Hendrickson and 2nd wife, Thea Berg; Ole married Esther Elton; Martin married Lillian Harmer; Bertha married Hans Gunderson; William married Sadie Nelson and 2nd wife, Nellie Ducette; Josie married Olavus Anfinson; Osten “Adolph” married Elizabeth Rech; Thomas married Grace Thorson; and Joel married Madge Hamblin.  John M. first went into business as partner in Elton-Ellingboe general store in McGloughery Block, 4th and Division Street, Northfield.  Later, John M. and Martin started a men’s clothing store, Ellingboe Clothing located at 19 Bridge Square, which they operated for 41 years with the help of Joel and Thomas, until they sold the business to Leutholds.  About the same time, 1911, Adolph managed a men’s clothing store at Cannon Falls, MN, for John M.  Ole and William worked at Lee Furniture, in Northfield, in the middle of the McGloughery block.  Ole later moved to Ladysmith, WI, where he had his furniture and funeral home.  William had a mortuary in Crystal Falls, MI.  Bertha married Hans Gunderson in 1904.  Hans was employed many years at the Northfield Independent.  Josie worked as a clerk in the general store, Elthon-Ellinboe.  Josie married Olavus Anfinson, of Northfield, on November 16, 1908.  Olavus was a barber in Northfield for over 50 years.  Josie and Olavus had 5 living children and lived in Northfield until he passed away in 1946, at which time she went to live with one of her children in Minneapolis.  Josie passed away October 9, 1972, at the Dilley Retirement Center of Northfield.
