Her obit said that she and Frank were in North Dakota between 1903 and 1911. Etta was a Methodist. She was a charter member of the Pepin Lakeside Camp 3184 of the Royal Neighbors of America. (This was basically a women’s social organization, that later became a life insurance company targeted towards women.)

Etta Engels and family were living in Garfield township, Polk County, on January 13, 1920, the day they were visited by the census "enumerator", Hazel Wolf.

Etta is shown as 41, a widow, and a farmer. She is shown as born in Wisconsin but her father was born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania.

Children living with her are: Helen, 21, born in Wisconsin, Shirley (occupation:farmer), 16, born in North Dakota, Viva, 14, also born in North Dakota, Dorothy, 6, born in Wisconsin, and Donald, 3, born in Wisconsin. (Gertrude, the oldest, was married and gone by 1920.)

Donna says: “Etta was a young widow..You know that she lived near my grandparents and she and grandma Marta were friends. Etta was mom's Bible School teacher and taught at her house. Poor Etta had to raise kids alone and keep that farm going which she did.”

Shown as Etta J. Engels in the 1930 census. Living with her at that time were Shirley J., his wife, Letha or Latha R., their daughter Margerie A., Etta’s daughter Viva E., Etta’s daughter Dorothy, and Etta’s son Donald F.

    Notes:

The family name was spelled in the 1860 census as Engle, in the 1870 census as Ingles, in the 1880 census as Engel, and in the 1900 census as Engle.

His son William’s obit referred to August’s farm as “on Big Hill.”

In the 1895 state census, he is August Engel. His household consists of 6 males and 2 females, 7 of whom were born in the U.S. and 1 in Germany. This suggests that Sarah may have died by 1895 and that one of the girls was not living at home.

According to the 1900 census he came to the U.S. in 1854.

August Engel, 63, retired farmer, and Anna, 49, are living in the village of Pepin at the time of the 1905 state census.

In the 1910 census, he lives in Pepin County. Living with him are the widow Lousia Anderson, housekeeper, age 24, and her two children, Vernon H., 2, and Elma E., eight months. (She may be the Mrs. Lucy Anderson who was a witness to August’s will. She later filed a claim against the estate and was awarded $600.)

The probate of his estate was initiated by his son William, as executor, in March of 1916. That proceeding was completed on 25 March 1918 in Pepin.

August’s real estate at the time of his death was described in the probate documents as follows:

SW ¼ of NW ¼ of Sec 3 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres, valued at $2800.
    W ½ of SE ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 34 of Town 24 Range 14, 20 acres valued at $300.
SE ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 4 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres valued at $375.
SW ¼ of SE ¼ of Section 4 of Town 23 Range 14, 40 acres valued at $1525.
South end of Lot no. 6, Section 22, Town 23 Range 14, 22 acres valued at $150.
Lots 9, 10, and 11 of Block 8, Village of Pepin, valued at $1800.
Lot 1 of Block 8, Village of Pepin, valued at $75.
SW corner of SE ¼ of NE ¼ of NW ¼ of Section 25, Town 23 Range 15, illegible but perhaps valued at $600.

August’s estate also contained a note from Schruth Brothers, 1915, valued at $250 and one horse valued at $150.

Can’t find them in Pepin County in the 1870 census.

Find A Grave notes that there are two unidentified graves in spaces 3 and 4 of plot 161b in Oakwood that are listed for Fred. Those two graves are probably for the two children who died in the 1870s. Alternatively, they may have been saved for his sons by his first marriage.

Frederick married Eliza Ann FLEMING on 4 Oct 1863 in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Eliza (daughter of James Clinton FLEMING and Susannah PENCE) was born on 19 Jun 1847 in Pennsylvania; died on 25 Nov 1923 in Wabasha County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Eliza Young was a 32 year-old new widow, and pregnant, heading up her household in Pepin in the 1880 census. She and her family lived a few houses away from, and very near, the August Engel family. Living with her were her children Mary E., 14, Albert C., 11, Caroline S., 9, Anna R., 7, Frederick W., 5, Clara B., 3, and Julietta 1. Also living with her were her step-sons George Young, 19, and John Young, 18. The father of all of her children and step-children was born in Bremen. The mother of John and George was also born in Bremen.

In the 1900 census, she and Frank and family are living in Wabasha. She is shown to have had 15 children, 12 still living. Living with her and Frank are Etta, 16, James, 13, Jessie, 12, Archie, 11, and Cathy, 7.

By September of 1918, she was living with her son James in Chisholm.

  3. 10.  William F SADDLER was born on 28 Jul 1828 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania; died on 21 Mar 1893 in Pepin County, Wisconsin; was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin, Pepin County, Wisconsin.

    Notes:

From Find A Grave and Cynthia and the History of Chippewa County, published in 1891-1892.

William F. Saddler was born in Armstrong county, Pa. July 28, 1827, a son of Isaac P. Saddler, D.D., and Sarah C. (Philliber) Saddler, who were of German descent. When he was six years of age his parents removed to Oliver, Jefferson county, Pa., which was then a wilderness.

He received but little education, and at eighteen years of age began life as a laborer. December 21, 1848, he married Rachel S. Jones, who was born June 10, 1828, and died May 21, 1870. They had six children, as follows: Henry P.; Sarah A. (Mrs. A. Engel), born September 8, 1849; William I., October 5, 1851; John W., April 20, 1854 died November 2, 1886; Nancy E. (Mrs. G. Wartinby), December 4, 1856, died October 8, 1877; and Vinnie E., born February 18, 1870, died August 3, 1870. April 16, 1871, Mr. Saddler married Mrs. Eliza Fayerweather, and in April, 1855, the family removed to Pepin.

Mr. Saddler had just sufficient means to buy eighty acres of wild land on section nineteen, township twenty-three, range fourteen, and began working out to support his family. He helped to build the mill for Mills & Ingalls, and ground the first grain and sawed the first lumber there in in the spring of 1856.

[The Isaac Ingalls family was listed next to the Saddlers in the 1860 census. Isaac was born in Maine and was not, alas, related to Charles Ingalls, the father of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who lived in Pepin County in the second half of the 1860s.]

As soon as he was able he built a log house and began to improve his farm. His first team was a pair of calves reared by himself, and the vehicle was a sled hewed out by himself. The embryo oxen began to do duty as yearlings, drawing wood and water for the house, and soon after were set to plowing. By patient industry and perserverance the little farm was finally converted into a comfortable home.

August 30, 1862, Mr. Saddler enlisted in Company G, Sixteenth Wisconsin infantry, Chippewa guards. They took part in the battle of Corinth and the siege of Vicksburg, serving mostly in detached pioneer corps. He came home on furlough, with malarial fever, September 3, 1863, but returned in ninety days and was soon obliged to go to the hospital, where he remained until the close of the war, when he returned to the farm, where he lived till 1881, when he removed to the village.

Besides having considerable sickness in his family, Mr. Saddler met with several severe financial losses. He had about $1000 worth of horses killed by lightning and disease, which was very discouraging in those early days.

He takes an active interest in politics, taking the side of the Republicans. He has served as treasurer, assessor and supervisor of the town. He is also a notary public, and has declined nominations for assemblyman and county treasurer. He is a member of the American Protective association.

In the 1850 census, he and his family lived in Pine Creek Twp, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.

He was part of the 16th Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. He was in the service between 30 August 1862 and 10 May 1865.

William married Rachel S JONES on 21 Dec 1848 in Pennsylvania. Rachel was born on 10 Jun 1828 in Pennsylvania; died on 21 May 1870 in Wisconsin; was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin, Pepin County, Wisconsin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His parents' names were John and Sarah (Everett) Fleming. the Flemings are of Irish descent. James received but little education, and at nineteen years of age began life as a pilot ofn a lumber raft, running on the Allegheny and Ohio rivers. In 1837 he made a trip as far as New Orleans. He was married December 27, 1838, to Miss Susan, daughter of Henry and Betsy (Gumbert) Pence. She was born March 31, 1820. Seven children blessed their union, namely: John, born March 23, 1840, Nancy J. In 1854, he made a trip to Pepin and decided to move thither with his family. The following year he loaded his goods and family into a wagon and started to drive to Wisconsin. One horse became lame and he then shipped his outfit on a steamboat from Pittsburgh, paying all his ready money for their fare to Dubuque, Iowa. On the route he was seized with cholera and they were unable to proceed by team. Riding the horses out a few miles they were met and befriended by a farmer who kindly entertained the family, gave Mr. Fleming medicine, which soon caused him to recover, and advanced a small sum of money. The balance of his wagon having arrived in the meantime, the proceeds of which the journey was continued to Guttenburg, Iowa. Here he took passage by steamer to Read's Landing, Minn., agreeing to leave the goods as security for a portion of their fare, which was advanced by a merchant at Read's on their arriveal, who took security on the goods. Crossing to Pepin, Mr. Fleming began teaming, redeemed his goods, and the following year, 1856, made a claim on section seventeen, township twenty-three, range fourteen, built a log house, and continued to make improvements until his death. Mr. Fleming was a member of the Protestant Methodist church, and an active, enterprising man, respected by all who knew him.

The balance of his wagon having arrived in the meanwhile, the family drove to Le 'Claire, Iowa, where Mr. Fleming got work teaming, with the proceeds of which the journey was continued to Guttenburg, Iowa. Here he took passage by steamer to Reed's Landing, Minnesota, agreeing to leave the goods as security for a portion of their fare, which was advanced by a merchant at Reed's on their arrival, who took security of the goods.

Crossing to Pepin, Mr. Fleming began teaming, redeeming his goods, and the following year, 1856, made a claim on Section 17, Township 23, Range 14. Here he built a log cabin and began the work of developing a farm, continueing to make improvements until his death.

He was an active and enterprising man, a member of the Protestant Methodist Church, and respected by all who knew him. His wife died about 1894.
