Paul R. Mayer, age 94, died February 23, 2021 after a valiant fight to recover from complications after a fall.

Paul was born and raised in Minnesota but moved to Savannah, GA to work as a plant engineer for Hobart Corporation in Richmond Hill. After his retirement, his practical and analytical side kept him active and busy finding new uses for old things. Calculating, measuring and re-working everything filled his days.

Paul is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn O. Mayer, and his two sons, Mitchell G. Mayer and Daniel D. Mayer. He is survived by daughters Lynda Reis (Robin) of Waleska, GA, Karrie Walker (Michael) of Savannah, GA, daughter-in-law Rebecca Lynn Mayer of Pooler, GA, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

As a U.S. Army WWII veteran, Paul’s life will be honored in a private service at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA when COVID restrictions are lifted.

Registered for the draft on June 5th in Rosetown, Ramsey County. He gave his address as Route #3, Merriam Park, St. Paul. He was employed as a machinist and auto mechanic by Stahl Manufacturing Company of 903 17th Avenue S.E. in Minneapolis. He was single and listed his mother and (presumably her) two children as relying on him for their support. He was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair.

In the 1930 census, he and his family lived in Rose Twp, Ramsey County. Louis was a machinist in steel manufacturing.

In the 1860 census there is an 8 year-old Engelbert Meyer, son of Johann and Anna Hefenmeyer, living with his parents and siblings on a farm in Freedonia, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Both parents had been born in Bavaria.

Both parents were born in Germany according to the 1900 census.

In the 1880 census, the young family is living in the town of Winona, Winona County, Minnesota. Ingelbert, 29, is a wagon maker. His wife is Wally, 21, and the children are Fanny, 1, and Henry, 3 months.

In the 1885 state census, the family is still in Winona. He is 34, his wife, Wally, is 26, and their children are Fanny, 6, Henry, 5, Carrie, 4, John, 3, and Dalla 1.

An Engelbert Mayer, carriage manufacturer, is listed in the 1889-91 Minneapolis city directory living at 13 and 15 N E 4th.

In 1893, he purchased part of block 7 in the Prospect Hill development near or in St. Paul.

In the 1900 census, Engelbert and his large family were living in Rose Township, Ramsey County. His wife is shown as having bore 16 children, 15 still living. The 13 children living at home at the time of the census (June 15th) were: Frances, 21 (Nov 1878), Carrie, 19 (May 1881), Della, 16 (Mar 1883), Frank, 14 (Sep 1885), Laurie, 12 (Aug 1887), Ealvis (son), 10 (May 1890), Joseph, 8 (Mar 1892), Mary, 8 (Mar 1892), Louis, 7 (Mar 1893), Lussey, 6 (July 1894), Sophie, 4 (Apr 1896), Irine, 3 (Sep 1896), and Julia, 1 (Feb 1899).

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, the family is indexed as Meyers. They live in Rose Twp, Ramsey County, and have lived there for 12 years. The household consists of Ingbert, 54, a farmer, Walburga, 46, Francis M, 26, a seamstress, Henry A, 25, a clerk, Della A, 20, a clerk, John A, 21, a painter, Frank P, 19, a clerk, Louisa C, 18, a clerk, Elfince R, 16, a laborer, Mamie M, 14, a domestic, Joseph L, 14, a farm laborer, Lucy K, 10, a domestic, Louis, 12, a farm laborer, Sofie A, 9, Katie I, 8, Julie M, 6, and Thomas E, 4.

In the 1910 census, the family is still farming in Rose Twp. Walberga has had 17 children, 16 still living. Children at home were Loretta, 23, Richard, 21, Anny Mary, 19, Joseph, 19, Louie, 17, Lucy K., 15, Sophia, 14, Katerine, 12, Julia, 11, and Thomas E., 9.

Engelbert married Walberga GRADL on 28 Jan 1878 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Walberga (daughter of Steven GRADL and Mary SCHMIDT) was born on 6 Jan 1859 in Bavaria, Germany; died on 15 Dec 1940 in Ramsey County, Minnesota; was buried on 18 Dec 1940 in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. She was born in Bavaria according to her son Frank’s separate entry in that census.

In the 1930 census, she is living with her daughter Loretta Jeffery and family in St. Paul.

In the 1940 census, Walberga lived with her daughter Lorretta Jeffery and family. Walberga had a fifth grade education.

She died of stomach cancer. Her daughter Loretta, of 1067 Hague Street in St. Paul, was the informant for Walberga’s death certificate. Walberga died at Loretta’s home and had lived there for 15 years.
