Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Kenneth Oscar LANGEVIN was born on 28 Oct 1928 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada (son of Henry Eugene LANGEVIN and Sophia Matilda JOHNSON); died on 18 Nov 2007 in Trail, British Columbia, Canada.

    Notes:

Survived by stepsons: Jason Phillips of Calgary, Jeramie Phillips of Aldergrove, and Nathaniel Pelletier of Calgary; daughter-in-law Diana Pelletier, and his seven grandchildren (in order of ages): Tyler Langevin, Dallas Langevin, Nikki Van Ryssel, Mandy Van Ryssel, Jordon Langevin, Myhrsades Pelletier, and Zach Langevin, along with many nieces and nephews.

Although Ken lived most of his life on the west coast, he had many friends across Canada. Many of us will remember him driving happily across Canada and the States in his 18-wheeler, listening to his trucking tunes, talking on the CB. He had many good memories of the friends he made the hours spent with his sons on the road, eating at truck stops, sleeping in his cab, and passing each other on the highway. I can remember many a holiday visiting those same truck stops, checking to see who might be in town. He was a man known for his laughter and loyalty to friends. He loved to play jokes on people, and so he was also the receiver of many jokes as well. He was a treasure, a million times more valuable than the ones some people spend a lifetime trying to find. He was someone whom anyone would be privileged to know. He was not only a fantastic friend; he was a tremendous, rare and extraordinary person, a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and husband. He will be missed by all who knew him. This world is a better place because he walked through it. Celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 1st from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at his son Gord and Jan Langevin's home.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Henry Eugene LANGEVIN died in Unknown.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Carl Oscar JOHNSON LUNDBERG was born on 18 Dec 1873 in Torup, Hallands län, Sweden (son of Johan August (Gus) LUNDBERG and Albertina Josefina Wilhelmina ROSENGREN); died on 6 Mar 1962 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 9 Mar 1962 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

    He married his first cousin.

Supposedly had relatives living in Boston. On the ship’s manifest, he is referred to as “son Carl O. Lundberg, Boston” as the relative that his parents and three youngest living siblings were to meet in Boston. His sister Emma is also mentioned as meeting the family in Boston.

The Södra Hestra Household Examination for 1891-1897 (p. 209) shows him leaving for N. Amerika on October 6, 1891.

Terry says: I found Oscar Johnson leaving Sweden in year 1892 and arriving finally in Foreston, Minnesota, where my family lived and my grandmother Annie Josephine was born. It is near Milaca, Minnesota.

In the 1899 Superior city directory, and going by the address shown for him and his family in the 1900 census, he is Oscar Johnson, laborer, 1205 N 3d. In the 1900 city directory, he is shown as still at the same address and working as a laborer for the “St P and W Coal Co.” He is probably then the Oscar C. Johnson in the 1901 city directory who is a laborer for the St P & W Coal Co and lives at 510-1/2 Bay.

Shown in the 1900 census, and the 1910 census, as having come to the U.S. in 1890.

In the 1905 state census, he and his family were farming in New London Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. He was Oscar J. Lundberg, 30. His household was Mrs. Tilda Lundberg, 28, Esther, 8, Sophie, 4, and Nellie, 9 months. The family had been in the present location for 2 years. Oscar claimed to have been in Minnesota for 20 years and Tilda for all 28.

In the 1910 census, he and his family were farming in Grove City, Swede Grove Twp, Meeker County, Minnesota.

Terry’s check of the border crossing records: On June 14, 1911, Oscar Johnson and his father Johan August Lundberg cross the border {going from the U.S. to Canada} at Emerson, Manitoba by train. Their destination: Englefelt, Saskatchewan, which is the closest railway station to the Naicam area at that time. On the same train is J. J. Quaid, husband of Annie Rebecka Lundberg but his destination is Edson, Alberta. At that time it was a small town.

In the 1916 Canadian census, as Oscar Johnson, he, Tillie, and family were in St. Peter in Humboldt, Saskatchewan (39, 19, 2, St. Peter). The household consisted of Oscar, 45, Tillie, 43, Esther, 19, Frieda, 17, Sophia, 15, Emma, 12, Josie, 9, Myrtle, 6, and Charley, 5. They had come to Canada in 1910. (Although we know that Carl was born in Minnesota in March of 1911.)

Terry says that Oscar was denied Canadian citizenship but no reason was given. The 1916 census shows that Oscar became a Canadian citizen in 1915.

Terry says: Oscar Johnson and Tilley homesteaded west of Naicam about ten miles and moved into Naicam later. They had the cafe and rooming house above across the street from the railway station near the bank on the corner. (The cafe was on Railway Avenue according to Claudia.) They moved east of Naicam in the country later and had some land there. In later years they moved to the City of Saskatoon, Sask., where Tilley died and was buried in the Naicam Cemetery. Oscar Johnson also died in Saskatoon, I think.

According to his obit, Oscar had resided in Saskatoon for 15 years when he died in 1962.

According to Terry, Harlen Vollum, Oscar’s grandson, remembers Oscar Johnson arriving by bicycle from central Saskatchewan for a visit to his North Dakota daughter and family at age eighty plus.

Carl married Thilda Maria (Tillie) LUNDBERG on 4 Sep 1907 in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. Thilda (daughter of Carl Gustaf (Charley) LUNDBERG and Britta Maria (Mary Or Mare) SVENSDOTTER) was born on 20 Mar 1875 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden; died on 7 Dec 1941 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 12 Dec 1941 in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Thilda Maria (Tillie) LUNDBERG was born on 20 Mar 1875 in Kånna, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden (daughter of Carl Gustaf (Charley) LUNDBERG and Britta Maria (Mary Or Mare) SVENSDOTTER); died on 7 Dec 1941 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 12 Dec 1941 in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

    She married her first cousin.

Born in Björkelund, Berghem Andersgard. (The Berghem south of Ljungby.)

    Lived in Naicam, Saskatchewan.

Her birthdate is shown as Jan 1871 in the 1900 U.S. Census. Shown as having come to this country in 1875.

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris.

A Tilda Lundberg, of legal age, married Andrew J Swanson in Red Wing on 20 Nov 1891. The witnesses were John Lundberg and Ann Anderson. The “M.G” who performed the ceremony, Gustaf Rast, also performed the Blixt marriage.

Her father “Charles Lumberg”, had to give his consent for her marriage to Oscar Blixt in 1892. That consent form said that “Tilda Marie Lumberg” was 17 although actually she would have been still 16.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, Tillie is 21 and living with her parents and siblings in Athens Twp, Isanti County.

Jan says: Oscar Johnson and wife Thilda Maria lived in West Superior in year 1900 for a while as some of his children were born there in Wisconsin.

In the 1900 census, Oscar and Tilda and their family are living at 1205 Third Street in Superior. The family consists of Oscar, Tilda, Ester, and Alfreda. These are the only two children Tilda had had at that time. Also living with them is Charlie Johnson, still single, and relatively recently arrived in the U.S. in 1898. Both men are shown as day laborers. Charlie may be Oscar’s brother Karl.

In the 1910 census, Tillie is shown as having had 5 children, all 5 still living. That seems to exclude Josephine who was not listed with the five daughters in the 1910 census.

Perhaps there was an earlier marriage. Family sources also have 27 May 1896 or 27 May 1894.

    Birth:
    her gravestone says 1874

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Johan August (Gus) LUNDBERG was born on 8 Jun 1852 in Rydö, Torup, Småland, Hallands län, Sweden (son of Johan Mårten (Martin) Persson LUNDBERG and Maja Lisa LIND); died on 14 Sep 1939 in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried on 17 Sep 1939 in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 8 Jun 1852, Torup, Hallands län, Sweden

    Notes:

Had 6 kids. Also emigrated to North America.

According to the parish register of Långaryd, 1881-1890, Johan August was 1/24 part owner of Gässlingabo farm. They had moved to Långaryd from Torup in 1881. Johan was found guilty of theft in 1882.

There is also a record of Johan August as half owner of Segelsbo farm in Långaryd. The family (less Emma, who emigrated in April of 1889) moved to Södra Hestra parish on October 7, 1890. There is a suggestion that Johan August was found guilty of theft again on March 5th of some year.

In the 1890 Swedish census, according to one of Terry’s researchers, the family was living in Kindhult, Södra Hestra parish, Jönköping län. Terry believes that Johan August owned the Kindhult farm.

The Södra Hestra Household Examination for 1891-1897 shows the family living on Kindhult Södra until October of 1894 at which point they moved to Spjuthult Nestra, still in Södra Hestra. They (Gus, Albertina, Karl Johan, Laurentia, and Mathilda Charlotta) emigrated to North Amerika in 1896.

Johan August Lundberg, född 1852-06-08 i Rydö, Torup N. Hemmansägare
    i Sandshult, Torup N. Långaryd N 1882-?. (f).

The 1867-1876 Torup Household Examination shows that Johan August left for Transhult in 1875.

Johan August, age 44, his wife Albertina, 45, and their three youngest children, Carl, 19, Laurentia, 17, and Matilda, 14, arrived in the U. S. in the port of Boston, on May 17, 1896, on the S.S. Cephalonia. This ship had departed from Liverpool on May 7th. The Lundbergs’ last residence is shown as S Hestra, Sweden. The ship’s manifest lists their son, Carl O. of Boston, and their daughter, Emma Miller of Boston, as relatives already in the U. S. who will be meeting the immigrants. Emma’s address is shown as 129 Telestron Street, Boston. The family is noted as having arrived with the sum of $650.

There is a reference to a Johan August Lundberg being a member of the Norden Society in Minneapolis in the period 1903-1906.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, August and “Mrs. Albertine” Lundberg, ages 53 and 54, respectively, are living by themselves on a farm in New London Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, where they had been for 2 years. This census also shows that they had been in Minnesota for 7 years.

In the 1910 census, August and Albertina are living in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, Minnesota with an 11 year-old adopted son named Antone Anderson who was born in Minnesota. The census form says that the couple had been married for 38 years and that Albertina had had 6 children, 4 still living. The census erroneously lists their arrival date in the U. S. as 1866 instead of 1896.

In the 1916 Canadian census, August, Albertine, and Anton live in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Also in the household were their daughter Emma Griffin and her husband William.

Terry says: JOHAN AUGUST LUNDBERG also came to Canada {apparently Winnipeg}. I do not know what name Johan August Lundberg used in the USA but I suspect it was CARLSON or Johnson . I only have border crossing records for him visiting his daughters in Orr, St. Louis County, Minnesota and the other daughter in the Boston, Mass. area named Elsie MacFarlane. I have a complete residential addresses for the daughter in Boston but I have not been able to check any further yet on her.

The border crossing records show two crossings for August Lundberg. On June 19, 1923, he crossed at Ranier, Minnesota. He was a farmer from Watson, Saskatchewan, and he gave as his nearest relative his son Oscar Lundberg of Watson. August’s destination is Boston, Massachusetts, where he intends to visit his daughter, Elsie MacFarland of 22 Edgerton Road. He intends to remain in the U.S. for 5 months. He is described as 6 feet tall, of medium complexion, with gray hair and brown eyes. He gives as his place of birth “Heaplopsocher, Sweden.” August claimed to have been in the U.S. from 1896 to May of 1906.

The other border crossing is for John August Lundberg, a farmer of Watson, Saskatchewan, who is leaving Canada at the port of Winnipeg in September of 1919 with his destination Orr, Minnesota. He still claims to be a Swedish citizen.

Terry says: Johan August Lundberg came to Saskatchewan, Canada and takes out a homestead and in his records he claims to be a USA citizen (?). I also found him again travelling to the USA in the American Border records claiming to be Canadian and going to visit another daughter in Orr, St. Louis County, Minnesota.

As Terry points out, the John Lundberg living next door to Charlie and Ida in the 1911 census may be Gus.

An old news clipping given to Jan by Rose shows that Gus sold his farm land, and, presumably, moved into town in 1919.

Terry also says: One relative remembers a relative named "Gus” who died upstairs above their cafe in Naicam, Sask., and who was rooming there. {This is the cafe Oscar and Tilley owned.} He said he was a relative and was very old. In the Lutheran Church records in Naicam they have named Charley Lundberg as dying there but Charley actually died in the City of Nelson, years later, so I assume it was Johan August Lundberg who died above the Naicam cafe located across the street from the train station.

A couple of the locals remember Gus’s house burning down in 1927 which may be the reason that he ended up living above the cafe.

Jan found a border-crossing record for Gus visiting his daughter Mrs. Charles Okman in April of 1928. At that time, Gus was living in Naicam and was expected to spend six months in “Salmon”, Oregon.

Johan married Albertina Josefina Wilhelmina ROSENGREN on 28 Dec 1874 in Drangsered, Hallands län, Sweden. Albertina (daughter of Johan Fredrik ROSENGREN and Fredrika Wilhelmina HOLM) was born on 28 Oct 1851 in Dagsås, Hallands län, Sweden; died on 16 Apr 1919 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Albertina Josefina Wilhelmina ROSENGREN was born on 28 Oct 1851 in Dagsås, Hallands län, Sweden (daughter of Johan Fredrik ROSENGREN and Fredrika Wilhelmina HOLM); died on 16 Apr 1919 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada; was buried in Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada.

    Notes:

From Jan’s source in Sweden: You asked about the parents of Josefina Albertina but that is impossible to find. She was born in 1851 but in the birth record in Dagsås where she was born is she not. I found a Josefina Albertina in 1853 but that is not sure it's correct. In the census 1890 is she born in 1851.

    Lundberg, Johan August

(Barn), Karl Johan Herman 1876 Barn
    (Barn), Laurentia 1879 Barn
    (Barn), Mathilda Charlotta 1882 Barn"

So he did not leave Sweden at least until after 1890 census anyway.

    Birth:
or 29 Oct (Diana) or 9 Oct (Albertina’s gravestone)

    Died:
Other sources sat 16 April 1916. She is still alive in the 1916 Canadian census taken June 22-23 in her area. Her gravestone says 16 April 1919. Her death is not listed in the Saskatchewan Death Index which extends through 1916.

The 1871-1876 Kånna household examination suggests that Carl and Britta came to Ljunga, or at least Berghem Andersgård, on October 2, 1874, two months and twenty days before they were married.

They lived near or with his sister Emelie and family on Andersgård.

The Anbytartforum confirms this, saying: “Carl Gustaf came in December 1873 to Kånna from the parish of Thorup. He then moved in with his brother Carl Oscar at the Berget cottage under {near?} Kvänjarp. In October of 1874, he moved with his bride-to-be Britta Maria of the Björkelund cottage under {to? in?} Berghem Andersgård. They married that December. In October of 1877 they moved to Berget cottage under {in?} Berghem south farm. Then on July 17, 1881, the family emigrated to America.” (This may have been the date on which they were permitted to leave and actually left Sweden sometime in September.)

Lived in Kånna, a small town northwest of Södra Ljunga, until they emigrated. Left Sweden in September, 1881, with the destination of Red Wing, Minnesota. Terry says: They left from Malmo, Sweden on the Ship ALEXANDRA, arriving at Grimsby, England (east coast) taking the train to Liverpool. I have a picture of this ship. It never made it back to Sweden as it sunk in a major storm on the return trip to Sweden. Captain Johnson and crew probably all drowned but I never found about that yet. I have all the ship's crews names and home towns. The name of the ship owner was the South Sweden Steamship Company of Malmo, Sweden, which is on the south tip of Sweden directly across the Strait from Copenhagen in Denmark so there probably were Danish passengers too?

The name of the shipping carrier was the INMAN Line with tickets to New York destined for RED WING, MINNESOTA. The big ships from Liverpool were usually called CITY of xxx......... but I have not found the exact ship name they were on yet as some of these ships had six hundred people on them and there were many ships each day to New York. Annerstad is near to Kånna and South Ljunga in Kronoberg län, SMALAND, Sweden.

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma (but, apparently, not Charley) arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris which had sailed from the Swedish port of Malmö. The stated destination of the three was Red Wing, Minnesota. Carl Gustaf may have gone ahead earlier and then sent for his wife and children. All four are shown as leaving the Berghem Södregård parish at Kånna in 1881.

According to Terry, Charley, a 31 year-old tinsmith traveled from Glasgow to New York on the Devonia, arriving June 7, 1881.

In an 1885 census, the family was living in Cannon Falls Twp. The family consisted of Charles Lundberg, 35, Maria, 40, Mathilda M., 9, Nanny C., 6, Laurina, 4, and Alfred, 1.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, the family lives in Athens Twp, Isanti County. They had been there for a year-and-a-half.

In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was living in East Barton, Pierce County, North Dakota. The family consisted of Carl, 50, Maria, 54, Walter, 18, and Ida, 14. Both children had been born in Minnesota. Carl is a farmer, Walter a farm laborer, and Ida a servant. Carl and Maria came to the U.S. in 1881. Maria has had 8 children, 5 still living. Carl and Maria had been married for 22 years.

He moved to Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his second wife. But at the time of the 1910 U.S. census, he and Hannah were living in Milaca Township not too far from the John Quaid family.

Not listed in the 1911 Canadian census.

In the 1916 census, he and Hanna lived in Lake Lenore. He and Hanna came to Canada in 1911. Charles became a Canadia citizen in 1914, Hanna was still an American citizen. They were both Protestants.

As Jan found, Charey and Hannah lived in Preeceville Twp, Saskatchewan, in Canada’s 1921 census. They lived alone and were still engaged in farming. They still claimed, respectively, Swedish and Danish citizenship. Both claimed to be Lutherans.

Terry says: He probably never went to school since his land records in CANADA are marked by an " X" but even that I do not know for sure since he may have been able to write in Swedish and not in English.

Terry says: the LUNDBERGS in Sweden always used that name which is very unusual as most Swedes used Johansson, Svensson, Pederson, etc. and changed their name every generation. I have most of the Swedish records but can not find them in the USA; maybe they became Carlssons, Johnson, Anderson, etc. and thus so common a name it is hard to trace them in the USA....??

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 23 Aug 1845, Södra Ljunga, Småland, Kronobergs län, Sweden

    Notes:

Britta, Tilda, and baby Emma arrived in New York from Liverpool on October 14, 1881, on the City of Paris, originating from Malmö. They had departed from Malmö on September 22nd with their place of origin shown as Kånna. Their destination is shown as Red Wing, Minnesota. Presumably, Carl Gustaf had left Sweden earlier and was waiting for them in Minnesota.

From an entry found by Jan in the Anbytartforum, we learn that Britta Maria was born in the Jonsboda cottage on the Näs farm in Södra Ljunga. She was christened there on the 23rd. Witnesses were the soldier Johan Ekström from Hagatorp under {near? south of?} Össjö, farmhand Salomon Jonasson in Ljunga, maidservant Marie Jacobsdotter from {something to do with summer, summer estate?}, houswife Anna Lisa Larsdotter from Jonsboda.

A descendant of Johan Ekström says:

“His full name was: Johan Peter Jonasson/Jonsson Ekström [soldier surname] (1821-1868) whom I show living at torp Hagatorp, Össjö Norregården, S. Ljunga, Kronobergs län, Småland in Sweden in 1845. His son, Johan Salomon (1846-1928) emigrated to the US and settled with his family in Minneapolis, Minnesota.”
