His birth certificate was amended on January 3, 1955, to change his name from “Babe.”

George married Rachel Elizabeth WESTON on 13 Mar 1928 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Rachel was born on 8 May 1905 in Minnesota; died in Jun 1993 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Arthur George CHRISTY was born on 24 Oct 1881 in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, England (son of Richard Watson CHRISTY and Emma C CRAFT); died on 24 Jan 1941 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Jan 1941 in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1941-MN-018300
    • Occupation: Masseur, Turkish Baths
    • Baptism: 1 Nov 1881, Weston, Hertfordshire, England

    Notes:

    Buried as George Arthur.

According to the England and Wales Christening Records on Ancestry, an Arthur George Christy, born 24 Oct 1881, was christened 1 November 1881 in Weston, Hertfordshire, England. His parents were Richard and Emma Christy.

According to his son George’s entry in the 1930 census, Arthur was born “at sea, under England flag.”

His birth date is unclear in the U.S. censuses: the 1930 census record was difficult to read. The 1900 census shows his birth year as 1880. The 1880 birth year would also be more consistent with the ages noted for him on his childrens’ birth certificates. His date of emigration was also difficult to read: it may be 1898 in the 1930 census. In the 1900 census, it’s 1890. In the 1910 census, George’s date of emigration appears to be 1882.

George and Dolly and family were living on Aldrich Avenue in Minneapolis in the 1905 state census. George was a masseuse.

The 1900 census shows an Arthur Christy, 19 (born October 1880), married one year to a Sarah, 18 (July 1881), no children, living on Eastman Ave. in Minneapolis next door to, or perhaps in the same apartment as, a Cuthbert family. The head of the Cuthbert family is a man whose name begins with a C (maybe Clement), 46 (July 1853), wife Sofa, 36 (January 1864), daughter May, 15 (November 1884), Clarence E., 13 (September 1886), and Sheridan, 12 (June 1888). Because Sofa is shown as having had 8 children, 4 still living, Sarah is probably her oldest child. Arthur is a day laborer as is his father-in-law.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he is Arthur G Christy, “attendant,” living at 1408 20th Ave. N.

The 1910 census shows that the family was living in a rented apartment at 1202-1/2 20th Ave. W. This census also has Turkish baths as the industry of George’s occupation. The actual occupation may have been proprietor because he is shown as an employer rather than an employee. The census form is not clear.

Office was on 7th and Henn.

Registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, as Arthur George Christy. Claimed to be native born. Employed in a turkish bath by H. L. Turner at the Lumber Exchange in Minneapolis. His nearest relative is his sister, Mrs. A.E. Warren. He is medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair.

He is probably the 48 year-old Arthur G Christy listed in the 1920 census as a single man lodging at 1504 4th Avenue South in Minneapolis. That Arthur was born in England and was a hotel clerk.

An Arthur G Christy married a Rebecca J Meehan on 21 Aug 1921 in Hennepin County.

George and his young new wife Evelyn are living with Mae and Rhodes in an apartment at 740 Chicago Avenue at the time of the 1930 census.

He is a single divorced man living at 628 8th Avenue S in Minneapolis in the 1940 census. He was a high school graduate and is shown on the census form as born in Minnesota. He was employed as a masseur in a Turkish Bath.

    Birth:
Hitchin district; the birth date on his draft registration was 24 October 1878

Arthur married Dollie (Sarah) CUTHBERT on 7 Nov 1899 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Dollie (daughter of Clement CUTHBERT and Sophia GILROY) was born in Jul 1881 in Minnesota; died on 3 Sep 1947 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 5 Sep 1947 in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Dollie (Sarah) CUTHBERT was born in Jul 1881 in Minnesota (daughter of Clement CUTHBERT and Sophia GILROY); died on 3 Sep 1947 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 5 Sep 1947 in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1947-MN-022810

    Notes:

The 1910 census says Dollie or Dottie. In that census, her father was born in Michigan, her mother in Minnesota.

The maiden name of Cuthbert comes from the entry on Emma Mae’s death certificate.

Buried as 61 year-old Dolly Christy.

Dolly (as Sarah) and her husband Arthur lived next door to her parents in the 1900 census.

An article in the Tribune on March 21, 1914, describes a search for Dolly Christy, wife of George Christy of 1519 Park Avenue, who had been missing from her home for five days.

She is probably the 32 year-old Dollie living with her apparent husband, Fred Bungert, in Omaha at the time of the 1920 census. Living with them was E. Ernest Christy, 17, “step-son.” The Dollie living with Bungert was born in Minnesota to a father born in Kansas and a mother in Pennsylvania. Fred was a cattle buyer.

Fred and Dollie Bungert live in Minneapolis in the 1930 census with their (his? her?) 15 year-old son Joseph. That Dollie is still shown as born in Minnesota to father born in Kansas and a mother born in Pennsylvania. They live at 1825½ Minnehaha Avenue in south Minneapolis.

She died as the widow of George Arthur Christy at her home, 406 E 15th Street in Minneapolis. The informant for her death certificate was Ernest E Christy of 5545 36th Avenue S. She died from stomach cancer.

    Birth:
the date in her death certificate was 17 July 1886 in Waterville, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 12 Jun 1840, Weston, Hertfordshire, England

    Notes:

From 1868 until his departure for the U.S., Richard ran the Lannock Mill in Weston, North Hertfordshire, that had been built by his father in 1860. This five-storey tower windmill ground corn and had four pairs of millstones. The mill tower still stands but without its wind engine or any of its other machinery. It was last used as a production mill in the 1920s. In 1882, Richard sold the mill to Thomas Sanderson.

He and his family arrived in the U.S. in New York City on 20 February 1882 aboard the SS City of Montreal. The family traveled in a cabin, not in steerage. In the 1895 Minnesota census, he and his family were living in Worthington, Minnesota, where he was a baker. Still at home with him and Emma were Ernest, 20, Bernard, 16, Ethel, 14, and George, 13.

In the 1900 census, he was a salesman living in Minneapolis with his wife, son, and granddaughter. The household consisted of Richard, Emma, Bernard B., and granddaughter Fannie Simpson born in April of 1892 in Minnesota with an Irish father.

    Birth:

The 1909 Minneapolis city directory shows her as Emma, the widow of Richard, boarding at 4415 Xerxes Ave. S. (the home of her daughter Ethel).

In the 1910 census, she is a 67 year-old widow living with her daughter Ethel and her family at 4415 Xerxes in Minneapolis. Emma has had 11 children, 9 still living.
