  1. 1.  Mathilda Emelina ELLINGBOE was born on 22 Apr 1885 in Goodhue County, Minnesota (daughter of Andreas (Andrew) J ELLINGBOE and Emilie BOE); died on 4 Mar 1954 in Lane County, Oregon.

    Other Events and Attributes:

A note in the “Bemidji” section of the Duluth Evening Herald’s Saturday, August 27, 1904, edition said, “Miss Tillie Ellingbo, who has been the guest of Miss Cora Ralston for the past three weeks, returned Tuesday to her home in Crookston.”

An article on Tillie Ellingboe’s wedding to William Gilbert, a “well known Great Northern railroad man”, appeared in The Evening Times, later called the Grand Forks Herald, in its 2 Feb 1911 edition. “The bride had been visiting her parents who are spending the winter on a claim near Kelliher for a few weeks and returned to the city unannounced for the marriage ceremony. It was performed Friday evening at the home of her aunt by Rev. T.T. Ove and the happy couple are now cozily settled in apartments in the Rauch block.”

The marriage was recorded in the records of the Crookston United Lutheran church. The witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Austin.

Mathilda married William Lloyd GILBERT on 27 Jan 1911 in Polk County, Minnesota. William was born on 28 Nov 1883 in Lake Preston, Kingsbury County, South Dakota; died on 14 May 1971 in Ramsey County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1933-MN-000803

    Notes:

He may have been a policeman in Crookston in the early 1890s. A newspaper account from that period, exact date not given, mentions a “policeman Ellingbo.”

Andrew and family were living in the city of Crookston in Polk County, Minnesota at the time of the 1900 census. The children were still in school and Andrew was a saloon-keeper. (He was a bartender in the 1895 state census.)

In the 1905 state census, the family is living in Crookston. Andrew is a teamster. Tillie is a clerk.

In the 1910 census, the family is living at 511 Woodland Avenue in Crookston. Julian is a machinist in the automobile industry and Matilda is a saleslady at a dry goods store. Andrew is a bartender in a saloon.

In the 1920 census, he is Andrew J. Ellingboe, 62, living in the city of Crookston, Lowell Twp, Polk County. He is retired. Living with him is his wife Emily, single son Julian, 27, a race-car driver, and his daughter Mathilda, 34, and her husband, William L. Gilbert, 36, a railroad conductor.

In the 1930 census, he and Emily are living with their daughter Matilda and her husband in Crookston.

The informant for his death certificate was Jules Ellingboe. Andrew died of heart exhaustion.

    Birth:
His burial record shows 5 Oct 1858.

Andreas married Emilie BOE. Emilie (daughter of Iver BOE and Ingeborg) was born on 1 Jun 1860 in Norway; died on 3 Oct 1936 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Emilie BOE was born on 1 Jun 1860 in Norway (daughter of Iver BOE and Ingeborg); died on 3 Oct 1936 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1936-MN-023762

    Notes:

A good possibility is that she is the Ingeborg born in Vang on 1 Jun 1861 (bapt. 14 July) to the unmarried couple Iver Syversen Eltun and Ingeborg Johnsdatter Hermundstad. The father, Ivar Syverson (1836-1902), was likely the unmarried son of Sjugurd Gudbrandsen Uvdal, Vang A, p. 265, and his wife Anne Ivarsdatter Eltun (1813-1849).

Several sources call her Bella Klokkargarden, b. ca 1863. The source for that claim is attributed to Jim’s VS. It would seem that Ingeborg Austinson and Ingeborg Ivarsdatter and Emily Boe are different names for the same person. Perhaps she was also called Bella Klokkargarden somewhere along the line.

In the 1900 census, she is shown to have had only the two children. She came to this country in 1862. The 1900 census shows her birthdate as June of 1861.

An entry in the Wednesday, October 10, 1923, edition of the Thief River Falls Tribune: “Mrs. A. Ellingbo, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Gilbert of Crookston, spent last Monday in this city as a guest of Mrs. Oscar Evenson. Mrs. Ellingbo is an aunt of Mrs. Evenson.” Here, Mrs. Evenson was most likely Lottie A Austin, b. ca 1891, who married Oscar M Evenson in Pennington County on January 10, 1923. The couple, with their twin sons (Calvin and Charles, b. 10 Apr 1924 in St. Louis County), lived in Hibbing in the 1930 census. That Lottie died in 1937 (1937-MN-014320).

The 1930 census shows her having come to this country in 1882.

    She died of cervical cancer.

    Birth:

    University Hospital

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Farmer

    Notes:

Jon's family of 6 emigrated to Stoughton, WI, in the spring of 1850, then later moved to Northfield, Minnesota. Information found in the emigration list of 1850 (State Archives, Hamar, Norway): 9 March 1850... John Østeinsen Ellingbøe, 36, Margretta Øysteinsd., 31, Ambjor, 11, Ingeborg, 7, Ingerid, 4, and John, 1/2 .

According to Jim, Jon was from N. Bø; his mother was from Ellingbø (Bøkko). On 1 March 1830, when Jon was 15, his grandfather Andris (presumably, Jim means Jon’s grandfather Jon Andrisson) sold him Bøkko for 600 spd. with the provision that Andris could farm it as long as he was able. Andris died 16 days later. Jon's father farmed it for him for about 10 years until Jon took over and his father become a pensioner on the farm. Jon also gave a pension to Ivar Helgesson and his wife. See pp. 580-581 Ref. 1 for information to 1850. Some post-emigration information provided by John W. Ellingboe, Lloyd W. Ellingboe, William L. Ellingboe. Other information from census records, obituaries, etc. See photographs of cabinet painted with names of Jon and his wife. The cabinet was exhibited in the lobby of the Grindaheim Hotel by Marit and Helge Ellingboe. When the hotel was sold, the cabinet was moved to the nearby new house of Leif Solemsli, Jr.

In the 1870 census he and his family live in Stoughton, Dunkirk Twp, Dane County. The family consists of John Ostenson, 55, Margaret, 52, John, 20, Austin, 18, Andrew, 12, Thomas, 9, and Mathius, 8.

Living in Dunkirk, Dane County at the time of the 1880 census as John Austinson, 65. Living with his wife Margaret, 61, and sons Andrew, 22, and Matthew, 18.

In the 1900 census, he is an 85 year-old widower living as a boarder with the Andrew Morgan family in Pleasant Springs, Dane County, Wisconsin. He is still a farm laborer and is shown as having come to the U.S. in 1850.

An article in the Wisconsin State Journal, 6 Sep 1902, says that he came to the U.S. “over 50 years ago, settled two-and-a-half miles east of Stoughton, lived there 19 years, then went to Minnesota. He returned to Dane County 8 years ago last December and since that time has been living with a granddaughter, Mrs. Knud Soine, near McFarland.” … “He was the father of Mrs. J. O. Cold and Matt Ellingbo, of Stoughton. There are three other sons: John Ellingbo of Northfield, Minnesota, Andrew O. and Austin Ellingbo, of Milton, North Dakota, and four dead children (one son and three daughters), two of whom are buried here.”

The article goes on to say: “Mr. Ellingbo landed here following the period of hostilities between Black Hawk and the whites and years before the red men had wholly vanished. He was one of those brave farmers who transformed the woods and the prairies into beautiful homesteads, before the days of the telegraph and railroad.”

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Farmer

    Notes:

Øystein farmed Nigarden, N. Bø, from ca. 1810-1830, then sold farm to eldest son Aslak 2 Nov 1830 for 400 spd. and pension, moved to Bøkkadn (N. Ellingbø), to which his wife had rights. He farmed Bøkko from 1830-1840 with the help of his son Jon, who was the owner from 1830 (age 15) and who took over farming in 1840, giving them a pension that consisted of 2 barrels of barley, 2 cows, 1 heifer, 4 goats and sheep, the southern most storehouse, the use of a 1 mål parcel of land on North Klokkarhaug, lower part, with right to cultivate 1 mål of it, and the pasture land Neståkerreina. Jon's whole family emigrated in the spring of 1850. Trond Ø. Bø Ellingbø emigrated to Minnesota in 1853. Trond Ivarsson Uvdal took over Bøkko 1850, but emigrated to America in the spring of 1862. Øystein and his wife moved back to N. Bø in ca. 1865. The farm was divided into three subfarms, two under Bagetun and one under Nordigarden Ellingbø. In 1867 and 1868 (when Trond Øysteinsson returned to Vang) the farm was divided into four parts (See Vang A, p. 582), the main part being Bøkko (#33/3). Trond Ivarsson sold Bøkko to Knut Ivarsson Eltun for 500 spd. on 25 April 1868. It is said that it was Embrik and Helge Ellingbø who bought Bøkko from Trond and sold a half part to Knut, and that Jon Endresson and Torstein (son of Helge) took over each of the remaining half parts.
