[Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Berthe Andersdatter MAREIM was born on 1 Aug 1825 in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; was christened on 14 Aug 1825 in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway (daughter of Anders Andersen MAREIM and Anna Eriksdatter OPHEIM); died in United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 14 Aug 1825, Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

    Notes:

Shown in birth record as illegitimate.

Does not seem to be listed in the 1865 census.

According to Arne, citing Øyane in the bygdebøk, Bertha emigrated to America in 1861 and there married the Norwegian husmannssonen Peder Olson frå Bakken under Kroken i Luster in 1840. According to Øyane, Berta died in 1868 and Peder in 1908, likely in America.

The Hafslo emigration record shows the unmarried Britha Andersdatter Marheim, age 31, leaving on April 18, 1861.

In his further research, Arne found:

“Bertha and Peder married in Stoughton, Dane, Wisconsin 30 August 1861. They had one daughter there, Oline, born 23 March and baptized 10 October 1862. Later on, it seems they moved to Winneshiek, Iowa, and had two children: Erik, born 15 July and baptized 19 October 1864, and Elise, born 25 February 1866. It seems to me, they were still living in Winneshiek, according to the 1870-census, even if the age is wrong for Peder, Oline, Erik and Elisa.

“I have not found them in later censuses, or death records. It seems obvious, however, that Bertha did NOT die in 1868, and we do not know for sure if Peder died in 1908 as stated by Øyane.”

    Notes:

Age 44 and of Marem according to marriage record.

Anders and his family are included in the bygdebok for Marheim on pp. 383-386. Arne Fastebust’s family says Anders was a “husman på Kåstoveplassen under Marheim.”

    Died:
    “74 aar”

Anders married Anna Eriksdatter OPHEIM on 28 Nov 1827 in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Anna (daughter of Erik Jenssen OPHEIM and Benthe Jørgensdatter JORANGER) was born in 1802 in Opheim, Jordanger, Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; was christened on 12 Sep 1802 in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; died on 3 Jan 1849 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. 4. 11.  Anna Eriksdatter OPHEIM was born in 1802 in Opheim, Jordanger, Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; was christened on 12 Sep 1802 in Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway (daughter of Erik Jenssen OPHEIM and Benthe Jørgensdatter JORANGER); died on 3 Jan 1849 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 12 Sep 1802, Opheim, Jordanger, Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

    Notes:

Of Opheim farm according to Berthe’s baptism records and confirmed in marriage records.

She was 26 when she married Anders.

She does not seem to be listed in the 1865 Norwegian census.

We do not know the dates and circumstances for Anna’s death. The best guess, endorsed by Arne, is described in Lars E Øyane’s bygdebøk: Gards- og ættesoge for Luster kommune Band VI (1986). On page 383-85, Øyane claims that Anna Eriksdotter “probably died from cholera in Bergen 3 January 1849.” Arne concedes that Anna ending up in Bergen, rather far from Sogn, is problematic.

Arne’s summary: As to Anders’s and Anna’s seven children, all born in Marheim, three of them (Berthe, Kari and Anders) emigrated to America, one (Erik) lived in Bergen, Norway, two died early (the first Anders and his sister Anna), and only one (Brithe) stayed in Hafslo.
