    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 15 Dec 1861, Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

Berith is mentioned on p. 104 of the Vang B bygdebok but she is erroneously referred to there as “Randi.” The bygdebok identifies her mother as Randi Eiriksdotter Kattevøl.

In the 1880 U.S. census, she is Berit Pedersen, daughter of A. Pederson and his wife Randi of Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County. The rest of the children shown for that family are quite a bit younger although there is a daughter Kersti, age 10 (so born in 1869 or 1870) born in Norway. That implies that A. Pederson and Randi were together in Norway before coming to the U.S. in about 1870. Their 10-year-old son, Gustav, was born in Minnesota.

In the 1910 census, she is 48 years old, has been married for 29 years, and has had 15 children, 14 of whom are still living, and 13 of whom are still living at home. She came to the U.S. in 1872.

  1. 8.  Ole Severson RUDNINGEN was born in Dec 1828 in Norway; died on 29 Dec 1911 in Nerstrand, Rice County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

From Rice County Families, published in 1981 (via Dalby):

    Rudningen Family.

Ole Rudningen and his wife, Gunhild, came from Halengdal, Norway, in about 1853 and settled in Beloit, Wisconsin, for a short time. In the spring of 1855 they started their journey to Minnesota in a covered wagon. Gunhild chased their cattle on foot to their new home, a 160-acre farm in Wheeling Township, 2 miles north of Nerstrand. They had 4 sons:  Ole, Sever, Andrew and Adolph, and a daughter, Anna. The children all grew up on this farm and then Ole, Adolph, and Anna moved to Sunburg in western Minnesota.

Sever stayed on the home place and Andrew homesteaded on 80-acre farm in Wheeling Township, Section #5, and later bought the adjoining 80 acres. On March 7, 1885, Andrew married Anna Hanson and they have 2 sons, Sigvard and John. When Andrew started to farm, all he had was a team of horses, 4 cows, and a few pieces of machinery. One morning 5 horse-back riders rode into Andrew’s yard and watered their horses in the creek; they talked to Andrew for awhile and then left. A couple of days later, Andrew learned that the First National Bank in Northfield had been robbed and that the 5 men he had talked to were Jesse James and his gang.

Sigvard and John farmed with their dad until Sigvard married Mary Vesledahl and moved to the old home place and farmed with his Uncle Sever until Sigvard died in 1916. John married Theresa Severson, daughter of John and Anna Quie Severson, on March 9, 1927, and they had 1 son, Arnold. John farmed with his dad until 1940 when Andrew died; then he farmed with his son, and all during World War II they sawed lumber for the government. On June 28, 1952, Arnold married Ramond Eisen and in 1953 left the farm.  John continued to farm until 1966 when he passed away; Theresa stayed on the farm until 1969 when it was sold. Theresa died in May of 1980. Arnold is in his 26th year at the Owatonna Tool Company and he and Ramona live on a 40-acre farm in Walcott Township. They have 3 children: Mrs. Alan (Lynne) Minske, Mrs. David (Julie) Kobliska and John William (Bill), and 2 grandchildren--Jason William and Brianna Lynne Minske.

Ole married Gunhild Andersdatter. Gunhild was born in 1834 in Norway; died on 23 Apr 1909 in Rice County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Gunhild Andersdatter was born in 1834 in Norway; died on 23 Apr 1909 in Rice County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

From the Rice County Journal, 28 April 1909, via Dalby:

On Friday last, April 23, wood place in a kitchen oven to dry was left so long that it became ignited. When Mrs. Gunhild Rudningen, 75 years old and residing on a farm near Nerstrand, opened the oven door and admitted the air, the flames darted forth setting fire to her clothes and enveloping her whole body, causing burns from which she died. Mrs. Rudningen was alone in the house at the time but her cries brought the neighbors. When help reached her, however, she was found dead from burns and shock.

    Children:
    1. 4. Ingebret O RUDNINGEN was born on 17 Mar 1862 in Minnesota; died on 21 Dec 1914.
    2. Olof O RUDNINGEN was born on 22 Sep 1856 in Minnesota; died on 20 Jan 1938 in Swift County, Minnesota.
    3. Andrew O RUDNINGEN was born in Mar 1858 in Minnesota; died on 23 Nov 1940 in Rice County, Minnesota.

  3. 12.  Even Helgessen HØVERSTAD was born in 1803 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (son of Helge Kristoffersson MØSAKER and Sigrid Eivindsdotter SUNDSHELLA); died on 12 Apr 1896 in Minnesota; was buried in West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Sunburg, Norway Lake Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.

He is I4561 in Jim’s VS.

He later married Marit Andrisdatter Stele in 1866 when he became gaardbrukar on Hamre 59/1 Nerre Nordigarden.

Jacob married Randi Erichsdatter KATTEVOLD. Randi (daughter of Erich Christophersen KVÅLE and Kjersti Endresdatter KATTEVOLD) was born on 31 Oct 1838 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1905 in Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

She is I8781 in Jim’s VS.

Although she is illegitimate, her parents later married.

Anders Olsen Kattevold was her “responsible person” or principal sponsor at her baptism. That Andris (I1993 in Jim’s VS) was gaardbrukar of Kattevold 45/ Øvre at the time of Randi Erichdatter’s birth. Other baptismal sponsors listed for Randi were: Niels Nielsen Böe, Christopher Tostensen Kattevold, Margrethe Christopherdatter Kattevold, and Anne Johannesdatter Böe.

There was no other Randi Eriksdatter shown as born in Vang around 1838. Randi’s parents, Erich Christopherssen Qvale, age 36, and the maiden Kjersti Endresdatter Kattevold, age 26, later married in Vang on 7 Jun 1842. For this marriage his father was Christopher Tostenson and her father was Endre Thronsen.

Quite incorrectly, Jim’s VS shows this Randi marrying Andris Thomassen Høyne, b. 1830, and having four children with him between 1857 and 1862 in Vestre Slidre.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, Rangdi Eriksdatter, age 28, seamstress, and her daughter Berit Jakopsdatter, age 5, both born in Vang, were lodgers on the Anders Olsen farm on Søndrebøe østre 37/ in the Hoved Sogn subparish in the Vang parish.
