Generation: 3

  1. 6.  James Kenneth OLSON was born on 7 Oct 1872 in Iowa (son of John Peter OLSON and Stina Gullicksdatter KJØLSET); died on 7 Apr 1939 in Iowa.

    Notes:

    Went by Kenneth.

In the 1900 census, he was a farmer in Ashton Twp, Monona County, Iowa.

In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, he was a farmer in Lake Twp, Monona County, Iowa.

James Kenneth Olson was born, October 7, 1872 and died April 7, 1939, at the age of 66 years. He was the oldest son born to Mr. and Mrs. John P. Olson pioneer residents of Fairview Township and co-founder of the Albaton Lutheran Church.

Kenneth was confirmed in this church in the year 1889.

Mr. Olson married in October 1892 to Martha Maria Solon who preceded him in death in December 1903. To this union were born four children, James Newel of Whiting; Mrs. Martin Yackel of St Paul, Minn., Mrs. Harold Hall of Sioux City, Iowa and Mrs. Ted Napier of Fonda, Iowa.

On January 24, 1906 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Carrie E. Zurcher and five children were born to this union, Mrs. Malcolm Patrick, Denver, Colorado, Mrs. J.J. Weiner, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Dudley Delashmutt, Onawa, Iowa, Elsie Vivian and James Kenneth, Jr., Elsie Vivian and James Kenneth Jr, preceding their father in death.

Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step-daughters, Mrs. Raymond Hughes of Huron, South Dakota and Mrs. Leo G. Keller, Sioux City, Iowa and John T. Zurcher, deceased. Three sisters, Mrs. Julia Olson, Sloan, Mrs. Stella Allison of California and Mrs. Ed Haakison of St. Paul, Minnesota and five brothers, George E. of Sloan, Will H. of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, Gus A. of Whiting, Len S of California and John S of Sloan, and many friends who mourn his loss. He will be remembered as a man who enjoyed life to its fullest extent.

Mr. Olson was a resident of Monona County his entire life, the greater part of which was spent on his farm six miles west of Whiting. Except for a few years when he and Frank Jennewein were partners in the oil business in Whiting. It is indeed a strange coincidence that these two pioneers should both be called by death so close together.

Mr. Olson also served his community in various capacities of public office.

Interment was made in Albaton Cemetery.

James married Martha Marie SOLLIEN. Martha (daughter of Nils Andersen SOLLIEN and Mathilda) was born in 1875 in Iowa; died on 22 Dec 1903 in Iowa; was buried on 24 Dec 1903 in Fairview-Albaton Cemetery, Albaton, Monona County, Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1917-MN-024154
    • Baptism: 14 Jun 1846, Østre Toten, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

Mrs. Stena Olson was born in Norway, April 21st, 1848 and died in St Paul, December 4, 1917. The deceased was 71 years, 7 months and 13 days old.

When six years old she came with her parents to this country and settled in Wisconsin. Later they moved to Monona County where she has since made her home.

On April 24th 1870 she was married to John P Olson. Mr. Olson preceded his wife in death on March 5th 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Olson were the parents of eleven children two of which died in infancy. The living are; Mrs. Chas Olson, Sloan; James K Olson, Whiting; George E Olson, Sloan; Will H Olson, Watertown, S.D; G.R. Olson, Sloan; Leonard Olson, Sioux City; John S Olson, Sloan; Mrs. Walter Allison, Whiting and Mrs. Ed Haakinson, of St. Paul. Besides the children two girls were given a comfortable home and reared to young womanhood, Mrs. Ethel Stewart, of Villisca and a granddaughter, Pearl Olson, who has been an immediate member of the family since infancy.

Mrs. Olson is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Strand, of Underwood, Minn. and Mrs. Johanna Bakke. The funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church at Albaton of which she was a member. The six sons acted as pallbearers carrying the remains to the final resting place. Interment was made in the Fairview Cemetery.

    Children:
    1. 6. James Kenneth OLSON was born on 7 Oct 1872 in Iowa; died on 7 Apr 1939 in Iowa.

  3. 14.  Nils Andersen SOLLIEN was born on 15 Jan 1844 in Vardal, Oppland, Norway (son of Anders Olsen SOLLIEN and Marte Christiansdatter); died in 1908 in Iowa; was buried in Fairview-Albaton Cemetery, Albaton, Monona County, Iowa.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 11 Feb 1844, Vardal, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he was the 22 year-old Niels Andersen, an unmarried blacksmith, living with his parents, brother, and grandfather on Skikkelstadsæter (Rummet) in Hunds Annex, Vardal, Oppland.

He was Nels Solon, a blacksmith in Fairview Twp, Monona County, Iowa, in the 1880 census.

He was Nils Solien in Iowa’s 1885 census. He was still a blacksmith and was still living in Fairview Twp.

In the 1900 census, he is Nels Sollien, 57, a farmer living with his wife Mathia, 56, in Fairview Twp. The couple had been married for 26 years and Mathia had had only the one child, still living.

In a delayed birth record recorded in Iowa in 1942, an Oscar Solin claimed to have been born on 17 Sep 1892 in Albaton, Monona County, Iowa, to Nils O. Solien and Josephine Christianson. He offered as supporting evidence his baptismal record dated 16 Oct 1892. The ELCA birth records agree with this. The baptism was at the Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton. It must be a different Nils, however. The implication is that Nils and Josefine are married.

A Nils Anderson Solien, age 22 from Vardal, is recorded as landing at Quebec in June of 1866. There are farms named Sollien (#11) and Sørlien (#42) in Vardal in Oppland.

Find A Grave, in an entry created by “Gal Clark”, has him as the son of Anders Olsen Sollien and Martha Christianson. Except for getting the birth year wrong, the Find A Grave entry agrees with the birth record in the church book. That record shows the father’s farm as Skikkelstad.

    Baptism:

Nils married Mathilda about 1874 in Iowa. Mathilda was born about 1845 in Norway; died in 1905 in Iowa; was buried in Fairview-Albaton Cemetery, Albaton, Monona County, Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Mathilda was born about 1845 in Norway; died in 1905 in Iowa; was buried in Fairview-Albaton Cemetery, Albaton, Monona County, Iowa.
