Kimball Hugh BRADSHAW

Notes:

Kimball, a friend to everyone he met, passed away at 5:30 a.m., September 25. He was a grizzly old bachelor who spent most of his life engaged in physical activities: work and play. He was a long-distance runner, using both workplace and his beloved hills as his racecourse. But his runs were always solitary.

His working life was also one of physical vigor, working as a custodian for the University of Utah for almost 20 years, working on machining equipment at both Easton Aluminum and Black Diamond. He also did temporary custodial work for the Salt Palace and South Towne Exposition Center. He also kept his mind active reading scholarly books of many technical and historical subjects.

He was the first of the three children born by his mother, Beth J. Bradshaw, deceased 2011. He is survived by his siblings, Daniel Reed Bradshaw, and Claudia B. Herrera, and by his father, Dennis B. Bradshaw, (Of course, there are also nieces and nephews who survive him.)

At his request, there will be no funeral service and no viewing. Kimball will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered on the hills that he loved to run.

Dennis married Maggie Beth JOHNSON on 12 Sep 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Maggie (daughter of Joseph B JOHNSON and Mida DASTRUP) was born on 16 Dec 1923 in Utah; died on 10 Aug 2011 in Utah. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1920 census, the Johnsons’ only daughter was named Gwendolyn, age 5 months.

In the 1930 census, the daughter named Gwendolyn is 6 years old and Maggie B is 10 years old.

In the 1920 census, in which his age is shown as 28, he and Mida and their son Joseph H and daughter Gwendolyn live in Sigurd Precinct, Sevier County, where Joseph was a merchant in the hardware business. The Dastrups, presumably Mida’s parents and siblings, lived next door. One of the Dastrups, 21 year-old John O, was also listed as a merchant in a hardware store.

In the 1930 census, he and his family lived in Richfield, Utah. He was a carpenter. He was not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife and younger daughter are still there. His older daughter Gwedndolyn is listed with the family but noted as “ab” and was probably away at college.

Joseph married Mida DASTRUP on 28 Jan 1914 in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. Mida was born on 4 May 1893 in Utah; died on 6 Sep 1973 in Salt Lake City, Utah; was buried on 10 Sep 1973 in Richfield City Cemetery, Richfield, Sevier County, Utah. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Called Lydia in the 1930 census. Called Mina in the Utah Cemetery Inventory. That Inventory says that her mother was Minnie Snow.

He may be the 28 year-old Martinius Johannessen of Herstad who moved from Nes to Ringsaker, Sauseie, on 28 December 1880. That Martinius was shown as unmarried, however, and there is no corresponding record for Anne Marie.



All of the children were living with their widower father in Sevier County in the 1900 census. Martin’s birthplace is shown as Denmark. Martin is shown as coming to the U.S. in 1885 and all of the Norwegian-born children in 1886.

In the 1910 census, in Richfield, he’s Martin Johnson, still shown as born in Denmark. His occupation is house carpenter. Of his first family, only May is still living with him and his second wife. He apparently has had three sons by the second wife: Evan, Leonard, and Monte. Also in the household are two step-sons, probably Eliza’s from an earlier marriage: Ferdinand and Carlos.

According to his death certificate, the last two to three weeks of Martin’s life were complicated by uremia from retention due to an enlarged prostate.

The informant for the information on his death certificate was Mrs. Ellen Gurr of Richfield.

Many sources erroneously give his year of birth as 1853. His death certificate, for example, says 21 Jun 1853.

This is the date in the Utah Death Index. It shows Martin as 85 years old at death. October 29th is also the date in the Utah Cemetery Inventory.

Martin married Anne Marie Olsdatter on 18 May 1875 in Næs, Hedmark, Norway. Anne (daughter of Ole Christian Anderson FLØTTUM and Antonette Gülbrandsdatter AARLIEN) was born on 2 Nov 1854 in Aarlien, Næs, Hedmark, Norway; died on 24 Jan 1899 in Richfield, Sevier County, Utah; was buried on 27 Jan 1899 in Richfield City Cemetery, Richfield, Sevier County, Utah. Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as “his daughter.”

There is no mention of her as having come to the U.S. with the rest of her family in the late 1860s. She apparently emigrated to Utah with her husband and family in the late 1880s.

Anne Marie and Martin apparently converted to the LDS faith in Norway on 22 Mar 1882, their baptism dates. Up until that date, Anne Marie and Martin had had their children (Johanne, Ole, and Agnette) christened in the Norwegian church. After that date, they did not. (Berthe and Anne Mathilde were born in Norway but, apparently, were not christened in the Norwegian church.) Anne Marie and Martin waited until they got to Utah to baptize their oldest two children into the LDS faith which they did soon after arriving. However, for some reason, Agnette was not baptized into the LDS until 1963, over 4 years after her death. Berthe and the ensuing children were baptized in the LDS faith on schedule after their 8th, but before their 9th, birthdays, as is the custom. Olga, who never made it to her 3rd birthday, was apparently never baptized.
