Sadie C. Orson, age 95 of New London, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 am. Friday, August 3, 2012, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be from 5 until 8:00 pm Thrusday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London on on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Sadie Cora Orson was born on Nov 18, 1916 in Wilton, ND, the daughter of Clarence and Sophia (Ellingboe) Hjelle.  She grew up on the family farm in Arctander Township where she attended country grade school in Dist. #56.   On April 2, 1938, Sadie was united in marriage to Walter Orson at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church.  To this union, five sons and one daughter were born.  They made their home in New London where they owned and operated Gamble Hardware Store for 30 years.  She also worked as a nurse’s aid at GlenOaks Care Center for many years and volunteered as a foster Grandma at Prairie Woods Elementary. Sadie and Walter were able to share in 41 years of marriage before his death on Nov 1, 1979. 

Sadie was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church where she served in ladies aid.  She also served in Civic League and as a Cub Scout den leader when her children were young. She enjoyed needlework, flowers, baking and spending time with her family. 

Sadie died on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 95. She is survived by her children, Wilbur Orson, Wayne Orson, Ronald (Marsha) Orson, Marlys Bjur (friend, Ed Marklowitz) and Marlyn (Jackie) Orson; 5 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene (Ed) Mrzena and sisters-in-law, Ethel Hjelle and Evelyn Hjelle. 

Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Clifton and brothers, Orlando, Marvin, Elvin and Kermit.

Clarence married Sophia ELLINGBOE on 2 Apr 1910 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Sophia (daughter of Andrew J ELLINGBOE and Sigrid LIEN) was born on 2 Apr 1888 in Minnesota; died on 23 Nov 1978 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota; was buried in East Norway Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pennock, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Notes:

He is Andris Jørnson Ellingbø (#I22261) in Jim’s Valdres Slekt tree.

He farmed in Norway Lake Twp, Kandiyohi County. He came to the U.S. in 1872 according to the 1900 census.

A Norway Lake church history says that Andrew first came to Wisconsin in 1872.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he is most likely Anders Jørgenssen, age 13, son of Jørgen Evensson and Anne Thomasdatter of Pladsen farm in Vang.

The 1886 land ownership map for Norway Lake Twp in Kandiyohi County shows A J Ellingboe owning three separate parcels: 1) a 159 acre parcel in the southern half of Section 19, a 40 acre parcel in the northern half of Section 19, and a 40 acre parcel in Section 7.

In a 1915 land ownership map of Kandiyohi County, Andrew owned 160 acres in the southern half of Section 19 of Norway Lake Twp. This plot was a mile from Sunburg and abutted the county line border between Swift and Kandiyohi Counties.

He died of laryngeal tuberculosis which led to asphyxiation. The Willmar newspaper’s obit (February 15th edition) said that the death was unexpected and caused by a complication of bronchial troubles and pneumonia.

Sigrid (daughter of Ole Knudsen TØRSTAD and Anne Olsdatter FRAMSTAD) was born on 8 Nov 1859 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 16 Jun 1921 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota; was buried on 20 Jun 1921 in West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Sunburg, Norway Lake Twp, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Jim’s Valdres Slekt tree shows Sigrid as #I54394. It has her birthdate as 3 Nov 1859 and her death date as 16 June 1921. Vang church book has her birth date as 8 Nov.

In the 1900 census, she had had 15 children, 12 still living. (The list below includes the 13 children alive at the time of the 1900 census.) Those numbers are 17 and 12 in the 1910 census.

She came to the U.S. in 1861. A Norway Lake church history says that Sigrid came to Iowa in 1861 and moved to Norway Lake in 1871.

In the 1920 census, she is a widow, head-of-household, living on a farm in Norway Lake Twp with her children and daughter-in-law and “step-father” Asle Frövold.

Sigrid died of diabetes.
