John Theodore Melina, 47, of Virginia, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in his home following a brief illness. He died suddenly and unexpectedly.

He was born May 6, 1964, in Minneapolis, the son of Robert and Jerrimay (Connor) Melina. He graduated from high school, and worked as a baker.

John is survived by his loving mother, Jerrimay (Bob) Klima; his brother, Robert (Teresa) Melina; a niece and nephew; his aunt, Suzie; uncle, Marlin; cousins, Kelly and Erika and their families; and many friends.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Robert Melina.

Robert Bob Melina, 72, of Menahga, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born March 26, 1937 in Minneapolis to Robert and Bernice (Smith) Melina. He attended school in Minneapolis and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He was a P.B.X. installer and repairer for Northwestern Bell Co. in Minneapolis for 33 years. He retired in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Menahga; two sons: Robert Bobby (Teresa), of Minneapolis and Johnny, of Eveleth; a stepson, Keith Mayry, of Zimmerman; two half-sisters: Margo and Debbie; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Rocky; and a half-sister, Roberta.

He is a 14 year-old lodger living in Minneapolis in the 1930 census.

In the 1940 census, he and Bernice and Robert lived in south Minneapolis. The senior Robert was a truck driver for a WPA project.

An article in the Star on 31 Jan 1943 says that Robert A Melina of 1601 Portland Avenue was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and had been promoted to Corporal.

He was a veteran of World War II, Pacific theatre, and met Isabelle while stationed in Nouméa.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, Robert was a janitor for the public library. He lived at 1601 Portland Avenue.

He died at University Hospital and the hospital’s information was used for his death certificate. He was the son of Nick Melina and Evelyn Christy. His wife was Isabell. Robert was a veteran of WWII and worked as a self-employed service station operator. His usual residence was 2900 2nd Avenue North (2910 in his obit). He died of a heart attack, complicated by pulmonary edema.

At the time of his daughter’s birth in 1916, he and Evelyn lived at 605 11th Avenue North in Minneapolis. He was a 24 year-old baker who had been born in Italy. That daughter was Evelyn’s second child. The surname was spelled Melena throughout the birth certificate for his daughter.

According to the 1920 census, he came to the U.S. in 1905.

A Nick Melina married a Maria Cappella in Hennepin County on 2 Feb 1935.

In the 1940 census, a 52 year-old Nick Melina and his wife Mary, 37, also born in Italy, lived in Minneapolis. Nick was a candy maker.

He was living in Italy at the time of his son Robert Arthur Melina’s death in 1961.

He was age 24 at the time of his daughter’s birth in 1916. However, he was 32 in the 1920 census, and 52 in the 1940 census.

An Evelyn Christy married Nick Melino (MOMS calls him Melind) in Minneapolis on 6 Oct 1914.

In the 1920 census, she is the 20 year-old Evelyn Melina, wife of Nick, mother of Boby and Doly. In that census, the family lives in Minneapolis. Nick had come to the U.S. in 1905. Included in the household in that 1920 census are two of Nick’s brothers, who also came to the U.S. in 1905, Martin and Ralph. Nick and his brothers worked as laborers.

In the 1930 census, Evelyn was single and lived at a rooming house in Minneapolis. She had no occupation. If we combine the census entries for her and her son, it appears that she and Robert are living with Kenneth McKenzie, 28, Orpha McKenzie, 25, and Elma McKenzie, 7 months, among others, at 1816 Nicollet. One of those “others” was Raymond Jones, 34, a taxi driver.

She and her husband lived at 993 Aldrich Avenue North at the time of her death.

She died of a heart attack. Her death certicate noted that she was a General Hospital Clinic patient and that an “ambulance was called and found patient dead.”
