Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Josefina Carolina CARLSON was born on 11 Jul 1865 in Torup, Hallands län, Sweden (daughter of Unknown and Emelie/Emmeli Wilhelmina (Emma) LUNDBERG); died on 6 Feb 1890 in Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Confirmation: 1880

    Notes:

In the födelsbok, only her mother’s name is given, no father.

Probably not the daughter of Salomon. Called Josefina Carolina Albertine in the 1861-1866 Torup Household Examination (p. 95).

Emigrated May 16, 1881, according to Jan Webb. The portion of the family leaving Sweden at that time were Emma, Josephine, Charlie, Ida, and Hedda Sofia. Carl Oscar and Johan Alfred stayed behind in Sweden. The oldest, John, emigrated the year before.

A Josephine Carlson married a Charles Smith in Hennepin County on 4 Jun 1883 (#00210435).

A Josephin Carlson, age 16 (b. ca 1865 in Sweden), spinster, arrived in New York aboard the City of Berlin on 5 Sep 1881. That is the best match for Josephi* or Josef* arriving from Sweden in 1881.

A Josefina C Carlsson, b. 1865, kvinna, from Stamnared Halland län, destination “Lemont”, is in the Swedish emigration records (EmiHamn) as departing from Göteborg on 19 August 1881. The handwriting on the original manifest, for the Romeo bound for Hull, is not clear so “Stamnared” and “Lemont” are best guesses but probably not correct. (The Gothenburg index interprets birth place as “Stainnand.”) Halland is quite clear, however.

From Jan’s research, this is probably the record of Josephine’s death:

Josefina married Charles Cady SMITH on 4 Jun 1883 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Charles (son of Seagrave SMITH and Susan Almira CADY) was born about 1856 in Connecticut; died on 10 Jul 1898 in Spokane County, Washington; was buried in Fairmount Memorial Park, Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. Children:
    1. Fred Jay SMITH was born on 7 Mar 1883 in Minnesota; died on 16 Aug 1957 in Los Angeles County, California; was buried on 21 Aug 1957 in Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, Los Angeles County, California.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Unknown

    Notes:

Probably more than one man. In the case of Mathilda Maria, the father was Aron Carlsson.

The record for her marriage to Salomon shows it to have been the first marriage for each of them.

Unknown married Emelie/Emmeli Wilhelmina (Emma) LUNDBERG. Emelie/Emmeli (daughter of Johan Mårten (Martin) Persson LUNDBERG and Maja Lisa LIND) was born on 20 Oct 1843 in Rydö, Torup, Småland, Hallands län, Sweden; was christened on 29 Oct 1843 in Torup, Hallands län, Sweden; died on 19 May 1903 in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin; was buried on 28 Jun 1939 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. 2. 3.  Emelie/Emmeli Wilhelmina (Emma) LUNDBERGEmelie/Emmeli Wilhelmina (Emma) LUNDBERG was born on 20 Oct 1843 in Rydö, Torup, Småland, Hallands län, Sweden; was christened on 29 Oct 1843 in Torup, Hallands län, Sweden (daughter of Johan Mårten (Martin) Persson LUNDBERG and Maja Lisa LIND); died on 19 May 1903 in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin; was buried on 28 Jun 1939 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 29 Oct 1843, Torup, Hallands län, Sweden

    Notes:

Emma Wilhelmina in her birth record in the Torup church records.

Terry says: Emma lived near Kånna in Sweden and at one time lived in town there with Salomon. At the time that she emigrated, they had been living at farm Berghem Vastergarden in Kånna Parish, Kronoberg län, Småland, South Sweden. (From the Household Exam records, she had moved the family from Andersgarden to Westregarden in 1879.)

The two women with whom Karl Oskar and Johan Alfred are shown as living with in the 1882-1891 Kånna Household Examination, Ingrid Kajsa Erlandsdatter (b. 1834) and Caroline Erlandsdatter (b. 1844), are also living in the Grönlund apartment in Berghem Westregard in the 1877-1881 Household Examination.

Cora said that Al had told her that Emma was a genteel lady, used to servants. She was supposedly part French and Al was proud of this. It’s unlikely that the servants part is true. The French part certainly isn’t.

From Jan in June of 2005: The info I have is that the Lundberg/ Lind families were what is called "Travellers" - kind of like Gypsies. The Travellers went all over Europe, USA and Canada. They say they are not Gypsies. They moved around a lot, some of them were quite violent. Some arrested for theft and one was listed as beaten to death. Some did own property in Sweden but they were not well treated, maybe because of their violent nature and reputation? If you search on the internet , you will find several websites that tell you about the "Roma people." It seems each country calls them a different name. In Sweden they called them "Travellers."

“Got her moving papers May 16, 1881.”

Frank, 35, “Anna”, 37, Carl, 16, Ida, 14, and Sandy, 4, were in Cannon Falls in the 1885 Minnesota state census.

Emelie and Frank were still in Cannon Falls in 1895 according to entries in the 1895 Minnesota state census. The family consisted of Frank, 43, a tinner born in Sweden; Mrs. F, 42, born in Sweden; Oscar Fogelquist, 19, a common laborer born in Sweden; and Emil Fogelquist, 14, born in Minnesota.

The 1900 census said that she had 13 children, 7 of whom were living. We can identify only 6 still living at that time so either the 7 is simply incorrect or there is another child alive in 1900 that we don’t know about.

From Carl Johan’s sources, Emelie’s maternal haplogroup may be J1b3a.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Johan Mårten (Martin) Persson LUNDBERG was born on 3 May 1817 in Kristianstad, Skåne län, Sweden (son of Andreas Pehrsson (Anders Persson) Berger LUNDBERG and Elin STRÖMGREN); died on 22 Apr 1872 in Torup N Lumpsamlare i Rydö Pappersbruk, Hallands län, Sweden.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: “Rag man”, coppersmith

    Notes:

According to Carl Johan, Johan was called Johan i Ryd because of where he lived (Rydöbruk). Carl Johan also says that he was Johan Martin in his birth record.

Carl Johan and Jan have found information suggesting that Karl Olaf Wigren, a sailor, may have been the biological father of Johan Mårten. In the birth records for Johan Mårten, he is shown as the illegitimate son of Elin Strömgren, no father listed. However, in the household examination for the fortress of Varberg and Karlsborg, Anders is stated as Johan’s father.

    From Diana’s research:

Before he went to Torup, Halland, Johan was a millitary man in Karlsborg with the number 25. There he called himself Johan Mårten Persson Lundberg. Before he moved to Karlsborg he lived in Mariestad. He moved from Mariestad to Karlsborg in 1835. He and Maria Elisabet Lind married 12 Jan 1840 in Karlsborg. Maria Elisabet moved from Undernäs to Karlsborg in 1839.

Johan is referred to as Arb. No. 25 M. Persson in the record for his marriage.

He and Maja and his first son are listed in a clerical survey in Karlsborg. By the 1840s the family is in Rydö.

The census image for Johan in the late 1860s and very early 1870s seems to say April 1st. The May 3rd birth date is confirmed in another census or church record that Jan has received from a contact in Sweden.

At the time of a census in the late 1860s and very early 1870s, the family consisted of the parents plus Johan Alfred, Carl Oscar, Carl Gustaf, Johan August, Leander, and Vilhelm (Wilhelm) born in 1864.

Rydö is a place in Torup in Halland. There is or was a paper mill there too. Johan Lundberg worked as a rag-man and sold rag to the paper mill.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Andreas Pehrsson (Anders Persson) Berger LUNDBERG was born on 14 Oct 1789 in Lyngby, Skåne län, Sweden (son of Petter Swensson LUNDBERG and Elsa Catharina BORGSTRÖM); died on 16 May 1832.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Lumpsamlaren Och Artilleristen

    Notes:

He was in the military in Karlsborg and had the number 39. The family moved from Varberg, Halland, to the Karlsborg garrison in 1831.

Carl Johan says that Anders Lundberg was an artillery man at Varberg and Karlsborg between the years of 1824 and 1832. Carl Johan also believes that Anders Lundberg was convicted of theft at least three times in Skåne in the years before 1824.

Carl Johan believes that Fredrik Lundberg, b. 1741 in Skåne, d. 1789-1792, may be the father of Anders and Anna Sophia Mentzner, b. ca 1740-1752, d. 1800, may be the mother of Anders. Alternatively, and perhaps more likely in Carl Johan’s opinion, is that Frederick Lundberg was Anders’s grandfather and that Anders’s father was Frederick’s son Petter, b. ca 1773 in Gothenburg, who would have fathered Anders at age 16.

By Carl Johan’s research, Frederick joined the military in 1776 at Malmö and was dismissed in 1789. Peter Lundberg served in the military from 1796 to May of 1798 when he was convicted of forgery.

Frederick also had a daughter, b. ca 1768 in Gothenburg, who died in 1778.

Petter Lundberg had a daughter named Anna Catharina with Sara Wennergren in 1796. Later, Sara had a daughter with Samuel Gustav Blom who was born in Abild parish, Halland county, on 23 Aug 1800. Anna Catharina Blom, having taken her step-father’s surname, had children with a man named Lindqvist, naming them with the combined surname Blomqvist. Quite interestingly, three of Johan Lundberg’s six sons married or had children with women with surnames Lindqvist or Blomqvist.

Anders also had a son name Johan Petter.

Carl Johan also found an old newspaper from January of 1798 which describes that the priest who had been asked to marry Petter Lundberg and Sara Wennergren demanded proof that Petter was not already married to another woman. Perhaps he had made up his own paperwork evidence to show that he was not married to another woman! Nevertheless, Sara Wennergren had a child with Blom two years later.

From all of his research, Carl Johan offers the following best guess, reasoning that we must be related to these people as they were the only Traveller Lundbergs in Sweden at that time:

Petter Lundberg. Soldier 1796-98 at Landskrona garnison. Born 1772 in Gothenburg. Engaged with Sara Wennergren 1796-98. Convicted for forgery in 1798 and dismissed from the Army.
Children: (here’s where the best guess comes in) son Anders born 1789 in Skåne, mother unknown. Daughter Anna Catharina born 1796 in Skåne, mother Sara Wennergren.

Fredrik Lundberg. Soldier from 1776 to around 1790 at Malmö garrison and wanderer (Swedish vandringsman). Born 1741 in Skåne, died around 1792 (perhaps in the war against Russia in 1790). Married with unknown women before 1782, married to Anna Sofia Mentzer (b. 1760-1752, d. 1800) after 1782.

Children: daughter Maria Helena born around 1767 in Gothenburg, died 1778 in Kronoberg. Son Petter born 1772 in Gothenburg. Daughter Sara Christina born 1782 in Skåne (mother Mentzer). Daughter Albertina born 1784. Daughter Fredrika born 1788, death 1789.

Further elaboration on Anders by Carl Johan:

“Anders Lundberg lived a short life: 42 years old when he died. He began his career as a farm hand and later at the age of 18 he went on to become a soldier, hussar, at Skånes Husarregemente. In all, Anders was a hussar, naval gunner, artillerist, vagabond and ragman at Klippan's paper mill. In 1811, 200 years ago, he was dismissed from the Army and began wandering the roads as a vagabond. It is clear that he came in contact with Travellers and befriendend them. He adopted a Traveller lifestyle that resembles that of other "real" Travellers of that time (e.g., working as naval gunner, ragman, coppersmith, etc.). He may have been seen as a Traveller by other Travellers. However, the only "real" Gypsy blood in his descendants comes in when his son Johan marries Maja Lisa Lind and when their children marry into other Traveller families. It can also be noted that Anders at 3 times was convicted for thievery and in 1821 he was sentenced to 10 days of water and bread.”

Also from Carl Johan: “In 1812 Anders was convicted for theft and got 40 lashes. Later a second time for theft with 40 lashes again and a third time for theft on water and bread.”

    Notes:

Not tattare. (And, apparently, neither was Anders.)

Carl Johan comments: “At a unknown date, Anders’s first wife Kersti dies or get divorce and he marries Elin Strömgren at an unknown date. Since Anders in the 1810ths was a naval gunner in Karlskrona, and that fact that Elin travelled in the same area as Anders, I suspect he was cheating on Kersti with Elin. In order to get a passport to Skåne, Elin told the authorities that she was to visit her uncle Henrik Bengtsson in Trelleborg. The problem is that she had no uncle Henrik so she obviously lied.”
