He purchased Østerness on July 16, 1891, for 4000 crowns plus kår for her parents. Two years later the mudslide seriously damaged the farm. All of the people survived a traumatic rescue but the farm buildings were destroyed and the farm animals perished. Elias bought a small farm (Øver-Skjørdalen) nearby and moved his family there while he rebuilt Østerness. He moved the buildings to a small hill where it is today. He sold off several parcels of his farm where new owners established smaller farms.

He moved back to the new Østerness farm in 1904 and operated it until 1935 when his son Marius took over.

Elias and Laura had 10 children.

Elias married Laura Olsdatter NESS. Laura (daughter of Ole Olsen NESS and Guruanna Larsdatter STIKLESTAD) was born in 1863; died in 1950. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1865 and 1875 Norwegian censuses, he and his family lived on Næss østre where Ole was owner.

Ole married Guruanna Larsdatter STIKLESTAD in 1860. Guruanna was born in 1834 in Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway; died in 1889. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1801 Norwegian census, he was listed as age 9.

Ole took over Østerness in 1828 for 1000 spd. plus a large kår (to his parents).

In 1835, Østerness’s assets were 3 horses, 12 cows, 26 sheep, 12 goats, 2 pigs, plus ? barrel of wheat, ¼ barrel of rye, ? barrels of barley, 13 barrels of oats, ? barrel of peas, and 9 barrels of potatoes. This was quite a prosperous farm.

Ole married Beret Marta Halvorsdatter HEGSTAD in 1822. Beret was born in 1795; died in 1876. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Her father was Sheriff Halvor Olsen Hegstad.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, she was a 71 year-old widow living on Næss østre with her son Ole and his family. Her position in the household was a Føderaadskone.
