    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Birth Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Birth Certificate: 1926-45005

    Notes:

According to the MHS Birth Index, a William Richard Erickson was born in Hennepin County on 21 Nov 1926 to a mother whose maiden name was Kruse.

At the time of his mother’s death in June of 1945, he was “in the service.”

William and Charette G Erickson lived in Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1957 according to that city’s directory. He was a chemical engineer for the Marbon Chemical Corporation.

A William R Erickson, b. Nov 1926, lived in Lakeland, Florida, in 1993.

He and Charette lived in St. Paul at the time of his sister’s death in 2001. (This seems unlikely.)

William R. "Bill" Erickson, 82, of Stuart, FL. passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9th, 2009 at Treasure Coast Hospice Residence, in Stuart due to renal failure.

Born in Minneapolis, MN, he has resided in Stuart for the past year and a half moving here from Lakeland, FL. Prior to retiring he was the Owner and Chemical Engineer of Phosphate Engineering and Construction Company, in Lakeland for many years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a graduate of The University of Wisconsin.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Daniel William (Bill) ERICKSONDaniel William (Bill) ERICKSON was born on 21 Dec 1894 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota (son of Daniel ERICKSON and Brita (Betsy) JONSDOTTER (JOHNSON)); died on 17 Jan 1972 in Ramsey County, Minnesota; was buried on 19 Jan 1972 in Oak Leaf Cemetery, Bethel, Anoka County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1972-MN-002268
    • Occupation: Machinist
    • Social Security Number: 397-03-0897
    • Wisconsin Death Certificate: X01021

    Notes:

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, he is listed as Daniel W., 6 months old.

He registered for the draft as William Daniel Erickson, born 21 Dec 1894 in Minneapolis. He was a machinist for Ford Motor Company of 5th Street and 5th Ave North in Mpls. He was married with a wife and mother who were dependent upon him. The date of the registration is not clear but it is probably June 5, 1917, because only “wife and mother” and not “mother and wife and son” are mentioned as dependent on him for support. William lived at 1409 East Lake Street. He was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and light hair.

He and Selma lived at 1408 Clinton Avenue when Vernal was born. He is identified on Vernal’s birth certificate as William Daniel, age 23, a mechanic.

In the 1920 census, he is William D Erickson, living with wife Selma and son Vernal at 332 East 17th Street in a rented apartment not far from Lila Fortier (#252). (Mpls. ED 100, image 1 of 30). William is a machinist in a factory.

A William D Erickson married a Margie B “Faltz” in Hennepin County on 26 Aug 1922.

At the time of William Richard’s birth in November of 1926, Bill and Amy lived at 3227 Morgan Avenue North. Bill was a sheet metal worker for Economy Sheet Metal (his nephew Maurice Carlson’s business).

The 1926 Minneapolis city directory shows him as Wm D Erickson, tinner, living at 3227 Morgan Ave N. That is the same address as Amelia Hedburg lived at in the same directory.

In the 1927 Minneapolis directory, William D, tinner, still lives at 3227 Morgan Ave N and still works for Economy Sheet Metal Mfg Co. Amy Hedburg is not listed in that directory.

He is not listed in the 1928 Minneapolis city directory. There is neither an Erick nor a William D in the 1928 Milwaukee city directory.

In the 1929 Milwaukee city directory, he is William Erickson, laborer, wife “Aimee”, living at 88 Austin.

In the 1930 census, Bill and Amy and family are renting a duplex at 88 Austin Street in Milwaukee. Bill is shown as “Erick D. Ericson”, is 34 years old, and is a machinist at a sandblast shop. He was 21 years old when he was first married so Amy is not his first wife. He was not a veteran. Amy L, his wife, is 28 years old and was 23 when first married so Bill is her first husband. Amy’s parents and Bill’s parents were born in Sweden. Bill was born in Minnesota and Amy in Iowa. Living with them is Bill’s son, Vernal, 12, whose mother was born in Minnesota, William R., 3 years and 6 months, and Jean L., 1 and 6 months. The two younger children had a mother born in Iowa.

He is not listed in the 1931 or 1932 Milwaukee city directories.

Bill and Amy and the kids visited Maurice and Cora on Minnehaha on July 9, 1937, their first appearance in her diaries.

In the 1940 census, he and Amelia and their three children lived in Cudahy in Milwaukee County in a rented house, the same house in which they had lived in 1935. He was a machinist for a drop forge.

Bill “stopped in” to see Maurice on January 1, 1941, so the family may have been living in Minneapolis by that time.

He registered for the draft in 1942 as William Daniel Erickson of 404 Monroe Street, Anoka. He worked for Northern Pump in Columbia Heights. For the person who would always know his address, he gave his son John, then living at 5301 James Avenue N. He was described as having hazel eyes and gray hair, 5 feet 10.5 inches tall, 212 lbs.

In September of 1945, when he was living in Anoka, he sued his former employer, Northwest Automatic Products, where he had been a machinist, for a little over $400 for back wages and tools that he said had been destroyed in a fire. (The Star, 18 Sep 1945, p. 4)

Bill was still in the Twin Cities area at Christmas of 1946.

Bill and Marj lived in Huntington Park, California, in January of 1953 when Cora and Maurice visited them.

Living in Los Angeles at the time Erick died in 1957.

Living in California when Bess died. Elaine sent the thank-you card to “404 E. San Antonio Drive, Long Beach.”

“Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Erickson” signed Bess’s funeral guestbook.

On a card on a floral tribute at Bess’s funeral was handwritten: “Heavenly blessings to a dear and loving sister. Brother Bill and Marjorie.”

A William Erickson, b. 20 Dec 1894, died in New Richmond, Wisconsin (or at least that was his last residence), in January of 1972. His SS# had been issued in Wisconsin before 1951. The SS# for that William Erickson was 397-03-0897. Cora’s diary notes, for Monday, January 17, 1972, “Mayme called and said that Bill Erickson died this morning.” Although he died in Minnesota at Miller Hospital in St. Paul, and had a Minnesota death certificate, he also had a Wisconsin death certificate. His usual residence was in New Richmond, Wisconsin.

His Minnesota death certificate said that Bill died from uremia. He had been a machinist for the Deutsch Company. He was married to Marjorie. The informant for his death certificate was Jean L Beebe, Rt 1, Box 416, New Richmond, Wisconsin.

An Ancestral file record for Bill in FamilySearch shows a fourth wife: Mable Weiss. MOMS shows that a William D Erickson married a Mable Weise in Hennepin County on 23 Mar 1948. With that and the 1922 marriage to Margie B “Faltz”, it’s possible, probably likely, that Bill Erickson was married five times to four different women.

    Birth:
The Minnesota Births and Christenings database in FamilySearch shows a birth date of 20 Dec 1894.

    Died:
date per Cora’s diary; Wisconsin death index did not show a place of death but it did agree that he was 77 years old

    Buried:

Daniel married Amelia (Amy) Leavica HEDBURG. Amelia (daughter of August HEDBURG and Amelia CARLSON) was born on 3 Apr 1902 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa; died on 14 Jun 1945 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 16 Jun 1945 in Anoka County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Amelia (Amy) Leavica HEDBURG was born on 3 Apr 1902 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa (daughter of August HEDBURG and Amelia CARLSON); died on 14 Jun 1945 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 16 Jun 1945 in Anoka County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1945-MN-020492

    Notes:

Iowa Births and Christenings calls her Amelia Ludvico Hedburg. JoanErickson82 calls her Amelia Ludvievka Hedberg.

Both of her parents were born in Sweden.

In the 1920 census, she was living at home with her parents and siblings in Davenport, Iowa. She was a stenographer for a cigar company.

She was an accomplished pianist and was frequently included in musical programs broadcast by WAMD in Minneapolis. On several occasions, she accompanied her husband, “Wm. Erickson, tenor.”

Amelia L Hedburg is listed in the Davenport, Iowa, city directories from 1918 to 1924. She is listed in the 1926 Minneapolis city directory as Amelia Hedburg. At that time she was a stenographer for the E A Thayer Mortgage Company and she lived at 3227 Morgan Avenue North. In that same city directory, William D Erickson, tinner, lived at that same address.

A FamilySearch Ancestral File shows her marrying William Erickson on 14 May 1925 in Hennepin County. This marriage is not in MOMS. What MOMS does have is Amelia Hedberg marrying John Kruse on June 1, 1925, in Hennepin County.

A John Kruse was a prohibition enforcement officer in Minneapolis at this time.

Called Amy L Kruse in William Richard’s birth record.

According to the 1940 census, she had had two years of college.

Her residence at death was 404 Monroe Street in Anoka. She died from a skull fracture and resulting cerebral hemorrhage due to a fall in her bathtub.

Her obit in the Davenport Daily Times, 15 July 1945, said that she had moved to Minneapolis in 1923 and married William Erickson in 1925. There is no mention of anything related to Kruse.

    Died:
    Minneapolis General Hospital

    Buried:
    Cora and Maurice attended funeral.

    Children:
    1. 2. William Richard ERICKSON was born on 21 Nov 1926 in Minnesota; died on 9 Oct 2009 in Stuart, Martin County, Florida.
    2. Jean Lorraine ERICKSON was born on 8 Oct 1928 in Wisconsin; died on 27 Aug 2001 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota; was buried on 30 Aug 2001 in Cylon Cemetery, St. Croix County, Wisconsin.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Daniel ERICKSON was born on 17 Aug 1854 in Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden (son of Eric ERICSSON and Brita Hansdotter BEYER); died on 13 Feb 1910 in St. Francis, Anoka County, Minnesota; was buried on 15 Feb 1910 in Oak Leaf Cemetery, Bethel, Anoka County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1910-MN-000189
    • Occupation: Mason, Farmer
    • Baptism: 18 Aug 1854, Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden

    Notes:

Greg Loftness’s family tree on Ancestry calls Daniel “Mårs Daniel Erickson,” born on or in Mårs in Rättvik.

The marriage record for Daniel and Brita in Rättvik church book shows that Daniel was born in Wikarbyn 46 and Britta was born in Oja 5. In Bess’s birth record, Daniel’s birth place is Vikarbyn.

The parish record for Rättvik, Kopparberg, Sweden, shows that Daniel and Brita emigrated to the U.S. with one child, Brita. Daniel Erickson is shown as having been born August 11, 1854, his wife Brita Jonsdatter is shown as having been born March 25, 1857, and their daughter Brita is shown as having been born September 12, 1877. An accompanying parenthetical comment that is hard to read suggests that the family actually left the parish in 1883. This is further suggested by the fact that their entry in the parish’s 1884 emigration log does not have a date. The family’s residence is given as Wikarbyn 55. Their folio number in the förhörsboken is 276/2.

In the 1878-1887 Household Examination (at 276 in Vol. 2), the family’s entry contains the note that the family left for Minnesota in N. Amerika. The note seems to indicate that although the household examination says 1884, the out-migration record says 1883. Nevertheless, the last entry for Daniel in the household examination is in 1880. Column 1881 is empty and the column for 1882 says, simply, “i Amerika.” Brita, on the other hand, has full entries for 1881 and 1882. This suggests that Daniel may have emigrated up to two years before Brita and Bess. The 1900 U.S. census shows 1882 as the arrival date for Erik and Betsey.

EmiHamn has a Daniel Eriksson, b. ca 1855, leaving Grangärde, Dalarna Län, bound for New York, on 16 Jul 1880.

The 1881 Minneapolis city directory includes a Daniel Erickson, laborer, living at 29 20th Ave S.

The 1882 Minneapolis city directory records a Daniel Erickson, stone mason, with his business (and perhaps his residence) at 1825 3½ Avenue S.

The 1884 Minneapolis city directory has Daniel Erickson, bricklayer, residing at 2009 22nd Ave S and a Daniel Erickson, mason, residing at 2009 Franklin Ave S.

In the 1885 state census, he is probably the “D Erickson” living in Minneapolis (no age given but born in Sweden) with “K Erickson”, age 28, born in Sweden, and “Betsy” Erickson, age 7, born in Sweden. The household includes a 28 year-old male, B. J. Johnson. The census-taker was not Swedish.

The 1885-86 Minneapolis city directory records a Daniel Erickson, bricklayer, residing at 237 14th Avenue S.

The 1887 Minneapolis city directory records a D. Erickson, bricklayer, residing at 821 28th Ave. S.

The 1888 Minneapolis city directory records a Daniel Erickson, bricklayer for B Aronson, living at 821 28th Avenue S.

The 1890 Minneapolis city directory records a Daniel Erickson, “mason” living at 2700 East Franklin Avenue.

The 1892-93 directory records a Daniel Erickson, bricklayer, at 2700 Franklin Avenue.

The 1894-1895 and 1895-1896 directories record Daniel, bricklayer, at 1923 Washington Avenue S.

In the 1897 Minneapolis city directory, he is Daniel Erickson, bricklayer, living at the rear of 1416 S 3rd.

Daniel was a bricklayer who worked on the construction of the courthouse in Minneapolis. Construction of the Minneapolis City Hall/Municipal Building began in 1888 and continued through 1906.

All of the Erickson family records were destroyed in a fire.

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, the family is still in Minneapolis, apparently at 1923 Washington Avenue. The household is Daniel, 40, Betsy, 38, Erick, 8, and Daniel W., 6 months. The family had been in Minneapolis for 13 years. Daniel was a brick mason and had been employed for only 4 months the previous year.

In the 1900 census, Daniel and family were living on a farm they owned in the town of St. Francis, Anoka County. The family is listed as Daniel, 45 (born Aug 1854), Betsy, 43 (born March 1857), Erick, 13 (born October 1886), William, 5 (born December 1894), and John, 1 (born May 1899). Betsy had had four children, all still living. Daniel and Betsy had emigrated from Sweden in 1882. Daniel and Betsy had been married 24 years. Betsy is shown as being unable to read or write or to speak English. Daniel was able to do all three.

In the 1905 state census, Daniel and family were living in St. Francis, Anoka County, with a postal address of RFD #3. The family before him on the census form was the Charley and Augusta Youngquist family. One of the families listed not too many lines down was Wiese. Daniel’s family consisted of Daniel, 51, a bricklayer, Bitta, 48, Eric, 18, William, 10, and John, 6. They had been in the present enumeration district for 6 years.

He died from pleuro pneumonia (which he’d had for 7 days) complicated by heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver. Cora said Daniel was a drinker. Judy said he was not. Cora also said that Daniel’s death was precipitated by a fall down his stairs.

    Birth:
Wikadyn #36 according to the birth record. An erroneous August 11th or August 14th date appears in some sources, probably because a seven can look like a one or a four.

    Buried:
    Lot 2, Blk 11, Sec 2

Daniel married Brita (Betsy) JONSDOTTER (JOHNSON) on 28 Nov 1875 in Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden. Brita (daughter of Jon JONSSON and Brita ERIKSDOTTER) was born on 25 Mar 1857 in Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden; died on 31 May 1921 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 2 Jun 1921 in Oak Leaf Cemetery, Bethel, Anoka County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Brita (Betsy) JONSDOTTER (JOHNSON)Brita (Betsy) JONSDOTTER (JOHNSON) was born on 25 Mar 1857 in Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden (daughter of Jon JONSSON and Brita ERIKSDOTTER); died on 31 May 1921 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 2 Jun 1921 in Oak Leaf Cemetery, Bethel, Anoka County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1921-MN-018320
    • Baptism: 25 Mar 1857, Rättvik, Dalarnas län, Sweden

    Notes:

Greg Loftness’s family tree on Ancestry calls her “Björk Brita Betsey Jonsson,” born on or in Björk in Rättvik.

Brita Jonsdotter in Bess’s birth record.

An unmarried Brita Jonsdotter gave birth to a son, Carl, on April 1, 1874, in Rättvik. No father’s name shown.

In EmiHamn, she is probably the Brita Ericsson, b. ca 1858, leaving “Gagnef Dalarna Län” for “Anoka” on 18 Nov 1881. If true, that is in conflict with a later record showing the whole family leaving in 1884.

At the time of the 1910 census, Betsie is still living on the farm in Bethel. The farm is mortgaged. Betsie, 54, is now a widow living with her sons William, 15, and John, 10, and daughter Mamie, 8. Betsie is shown as having had 6 children, 5 still living. Betsie is shown as having emigrated in 1878.

In the 1914 plat map of Bethel Township, she may be the “B.E.” shown as owning a ten acre farm in Section 31. Specifically, it is the eastern 10-acre quarter of the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 31. It’s about half a mile southwest of Minard Lake.

In the 1919 Minneapolis city directory, as Betsy Erickson, she lives at 3146 Bloomington Avenue. She is the widow of Daniel.

In the 1920 and 1921 Minneapolis city directories, as Betsy Erickson, widow of Daniel, she lives at 1822 S 5th.

    At the time of the 1920 census, Betsy Erickson was living at 1822 5th Street in Minneapolis with her son John and three boarders: her daughter May, May’s husband Stephen, and a man named Oscar Dahl. Shown as having immigrated in 1882 or 1883. {Listed as Beaty Erickson in the 1920 Census index in Ancestry.com.}

From the city directories, it appears that Daniel moved his family to a farm in St. Francis in Anoka County in about 1898. Betsey, now widowed, returned to Minneapolis in 1917 and lived at several addresses, with John and Mayme, until her death in 1921. In 1917, she and her children were at Flat 3, 904 21st Avenue South. In 1918, they lived at 3840 29th Avenue South. In 1919, they lived at 3146 Bloomington Avenue. And by 1920, they were at 1822 South 5th Street where she lived until her death. Her death is mentioned in the 1922 city directory in which it lists the death of a Bettse Erickson on May 31, 1921, at age 64.

Referred to in the death notice in the Minneapolis newspaper as Bettse Erickson, 64, 1822 5th St. S. That was also her address in her death certificate. Al Carlson was the informant for her death certificate.

She died of intestinal cancer. She had had an exploratory operation shortly before her death.

    Birth:
    Öja 5

    St. Mary’s Hospital

    Buried:
Lot 2, Blk 11, Sec 2, as “Betse”

    Notes:

    Married:
As Daniel Ersson and Brita Jonsdotter. The entry for Bess’s birth record erroneously shows 22 Nov.

    Children:

    6. May (Mayme) ERICKSON was born on 27 Sep 1900 in St. Francis, Anoka County, Minnesota; died on 13 Mar 1995 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.

  3. 10.  August HEDBURG was born about 1863 in Sweden.

    Notes:

The Swedish spelling would probably be Hedberg.

According to the Gothenburg Passenger lists, an August Hedberg, age 22, left Sweden on 21 March 1884 on the Orlando bound for Hull. His destination was Lake City, Minnesota. He was born in Örebro Nora.

Called Andrew in his daughter’s death certificate. Called Gustaf in the 1920 census. Called Gus L in the 1930 census.

In the 1910 census, he and his family lived in Davenport, Iowa. He was a common laborer. The household consisted of August Hedburg, 46, Amelia (wife), 43, Amelia L (daughter), 7, Clarence J (son), 4, Bert Johnson, 21, and Ethel M Johnson, 18. The last two were the children of Amelia’s first marriage.

In the 1920 census, he was a grinder for a milling company.

August married Amelia CARLSON. Amelia was born on 1 May 1866 in Sweden; died on 16 Jul 1965. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Amelia CARLSON was born on 1 May 1866 in Sweden; died on 16 Jul 1965.

    Notes:

She celebrated her 93rd birthday on May 1, 1959, according to an article in that day’s Davenport Daily Times. She was born in Motala, Sweden. Her only grandchildren were Amy’s three. However, the article also says that this older Amelia had six great-grandchildren; she actually had eight.

    Children:
    1. 5. Amelia (Amy) Leavica HEDBURG was born on 3 Apr 1902 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa; died on 14 Jun 1945 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 16 Jun 1945 in Anoka County, Minnesota.
    2. Clarence J HEDBURG was born about 1905 in Iowa.
