As Johan Andreassen Ness, he emigrated from Saxhaug in late May of 1887. Nina says he came to Fergus Falls and then lived in Duluth.

In the 1900 census, a John Ness, b. July 1868 in Norway, was a single man rooming in Fargo. He was a laborer.

In the 1920 census, he was John A Ness, 51, a farmer in Berthold Twp, Ward County, North Dakota.

The family was still together and living in Berthold Twp in the 1930 census.

John, Hanna, and Lester lived in Berthold Twp in the 1940 census in the same house in which they had lived five years earlier.

Johan married Hannah JOHNSON. Hannah was born on 13 Feb 1875 in Sweden; died on 2 Sep 1974 in Ward County, North Dakota; was buried in Wild Rose Cemetery, Berthold, Ward County, North Dakota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He was a huuseier jagtseiler (something to do with huntsman) on the Strømmen Strandsted farm in Saxhaug, Inderøen, Nord-Trøndelag, in the 1865 census.

In the 1875 Norwegian census he was Andreas Aageson Nes, b. 1830, strandsidder, søfarende kystfart, living with his wife and their seven living children on the Beretstuen (Strømmen) residence in Inderøy.

In the 1900 Norwegian census, he was Andreas Aagesen Næs, fisherman, b. 1830, living on Strømmen #29 in Inderøen. His household includes his wife, Beret, b. 1833 in Værdalen, and a fosterson (actually his grandson), Andreas Hermansen Næs, b. 1896 in Trondhjem.

FamilySearch gives his last name as Stomen. Other sources give his last name as Aarfald.

He lived at “Beretstua” (Strandstua), Strømmen.

FamilySearch gives her last name as Aarfald and her husband’s last name Stomen. She may have taken the surname Johnson somewhere along the line.

In the 1910 Norwegian census, she was living in Trondheim with her son Herman and his family.

Notes:

An Aage Jonssen, age 28 and unmarried, was living as a servant on the Høe farm, Salberg parish, Inderøe, in the 1801 Norwegian census. Aage was a soldier in the national army.

Occupation shown as “Rid jæg u k” in source 95 for Anne’s birth. This suggests that he may have been a soldier.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as living in or on the Maritvoldvald domicile in Verdal with his wife and son Charl Henrik. He is shown as “Selveier med Jord.”

In the listings of his children’s births in Digitalarkivet, his residence is shown variously as Ør, Østvoldvald, Øhr, Maritvoldvald Øren, Øren, and Maritvoldvaldet.

He was a strandsitter, “a person who rents a house on a larger farm near or at the coastline.” At his death he was a husmann on Borgenvald and his last name was Maritvoldvald.

Kari Yamane calls him Johannes Hansen Borgen.

Among the baptism sponsors listed for her were Guru Olsdatter Leerfald and Biret Olsdatter Ness, her aunts. Her name was entered in her birth record as Gürü.

The November 30, 1832, date is the marriage date shown in Olianna’s birth record. It is also the marriage date shown in the Verdal church book. Other sources suggest March 1, 1833.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Gurru and having been born in 1809.

Shown in the 1875 Norwegian census as the widow Guru Halvorsdatter, b. 1809 in Vinne, Verdalen, “Svigermoder” and “for 2 Maal Jord”, living with Martinus and Olianna on Maritvoldvald.

Their first child was born out of wedlock.

None of the children remained in Verdal; four of them emigrated to the U.S.
