Arden E. Toso, age 91, of Fargo, ND, died Sunday, December 6, 2009, in Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.

Arden Eugene Toso was born on April 10, 1918 to Ole and Annie (Dolan) Toso in Grygla, MN. He grew up and attended school in Grygla. Arden worked as a farmhand in Grygla until 1945 when he moved to Moorhead. He worked at Riverside Cemetery as a maintenance person before becoming a groundskeeper at Concordia College in 1949. Arden retired from Concordia College after 33 years of service in 1982.

He is survived by nephew, Mike (Dee) Bonde of Fargo, ND, great-nephew, Ryan Bonde of Fargo, ND, cousins, Marian Miller of Cederedge, CO and Denise Miller of Baltimore, MD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Orville, Clifford and Teddy and one sister, Helen Bonde.

Visitation: One hour before the service.

Funeral: Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon, MN.

He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Valley, Marshall County, Minnesota, as Ole C. Toso, born November 26, 1889, in Ehard, Minnesota. His current residence is Grygla, Minnesota. He is married and is a self-employed farmer in the Town of Valley. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

In the 1910 census, as Ole Tosso, he is still single and living on the Christian Grover farm in Moland Twp, Clay County, as a “hired man.” His brothers Anton and Martin are also hired men on that farm.

In the 1920 census, indexed as Ole Taso, he is the Ole Toso living in Moorhead, Minnesota, with his wife Anna and his son Arden. He is a laborer doing “city work.”

Ole married Anna DOLEN about 1911. Anna was born about 1885 in Norway; died on 7 Apr 1947 in Clay County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1900 census, Christ and his family were farming in Maplewood Twp, Otter Tail County. Christ came to the U.S. in 1880, his wife Maria in 1881.

The family lived at Rt #7, Erhard, Otter Tail County, at the time of Mabel’s death in 1920. Christ was the informant for Mabel’s death certificate.

In the rural part of the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory, he may be the C A Toso who owns 80 acres in section 19 of Maplewood Twp.

In the 1940 census, he lives with his son Henry.

Christian married Maria Eriksdatter FRÖSLIE about 1882. Maria (daughter of Eric Johnsen FRÖSLIEJE and Siri OLSDATTER) was born on 3 Nov 1860 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway; died on 26 Apr 1938 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried in Maplewood Lutheran Cemetery, Erhard, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. According to Marilee, Anders took the surname Toso from a glassblower that he apprenticed under while in Norway. His original farm in Otter Tail County is still in the family.

Some sources say he was born in Hallingdal, Buskerud.

In the 1865 census, Anders and family lived on the Brænna farm (apparently not far from the Nordthosø farm of Jens Torgerson) in Jevnaker, Oppland. The family consisted of Anders Hansen, husmand med jord (tenant farmer with some land), b. 1821 in Jevnaker, Randi Olsdatter, b. 1821 in Flo, Hallingdal, and their three sons, all born in Jevnaker: Hans Andersen, skrædder (tailor), b. 1845, Ole Andersen, b. 1851, and Martin Andersen, b. 1861.

Anders married Randi Maria Olsdatter BRENNA on 20 Jun 1846 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. Randi (daughter of Ole Engebretsen) was born about 1818 in Hallingdal region, Buskerud, Norway; died on 2 Jun 1869 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
