    Notes:

Dorothy was abandoned by and, apparently, completely forgotten by both of her biological parents.

Couldn’t find her in the 1920 census. In the 1930 census, she was Dorothy Minske, living with her paternal grandfather and his 2nd wife, Ernest and Bertha Minske, in Minneapolis.

In the 1940 census, she and her family lived in the village of Pine River in Cass County. Five years earlier she had lived in Minneapolis. Her husband John M is a farm laborer. John was not employed but was seeking work. John had a seventh-grade education, Dorothy had had two years of high school.

Her birth certificate showed that she was child #2 of her mother. Her birth was legitimate.

Her first and middle names were added to her birth certificate on 18 Oct 1967. Dorothy died of a heart attack associated with diabetes. The informant for her death certificate was her daughter, Mrs. Verlon Larson of Bingham Lake. Mrs. Larson knew that Dorothy’s parents were Earl “Minski” and Francis Carr. Dorothy died as the widow of Jonathan M Martin.

Neither Dorothy nor her children are mentioned at all in Frances’s obituaries.

    Notes:

Nothing in MHS death records for this name. Nor is there anything in SSDI.

This Earl Minske registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. At that time he was still single. He lived at 3026 15th Avenue S. in Minneapolis and was a chauffeur. He was born in Minneapolis on 2 April 1896. He was described as short and stout with blue eyes and medium hair.

Earl E Minske married two other women in Hennepin County in the 1920s (the first of whom died the following year).

In the 1930 census, he is the 31 year-old Earl Minski, an automobile mechanic working in a garage, living in a rooming house in Milwaukee.

A brief mention in the Minneapolis Star’s 10 Oct 1933 edition (p. 17 in Vital Statistics) notes that he was granted a divorce from Hazel Maud.

He had five children with Lillian Esther Forehand in the period between 1935 and 1941 although MOMS does not have a marriage record for Earl and Lillian. Lillian died in Wisconsin on 9 Aug 2001 as Lillian E. Branch. More on the family that Earl had with Lillian can be found at The Sprague Project.

The newspaper article on his funeral noted that he was survived by his wife Lillian, five sons (Ernest, Ronald, Laird, Donald, and Robert) and one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Phelps. There is no mention of Dorothy.

    Birth:
This date according to his draft registration card and Minnesota Births and Christenings. The 1900 census says April, 1895.

    Died:
funeral notice in the 27 Oct 1954 Eau Claire Leader -Telegram

    Notes:

According to the 1900 census, was born in Minnesota. According to later censuses, was born in Canada.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, Charles, 12, Francis, 9, and Ruth, 6, were living in Minneapolis with a large number of other young children in what must have been an orphanage at 3200 Stevens Avenue. Indeed, it was the Stevens Avenue Home for Children and Aged Women.

The Minneapolis Tribune’s 25 Feb 1915 edition featured a photo of Frances with a story headlined “Young Wife, Missing Five Days, Returns to her Mother’s Home.” Frances had stayed with a friend for five days, unhappy with her treatment at the hands of her husband and too proud to return to her mother’s home. The article says that “late in 1912, Frances Carr was a student at West High when Frank Augustine appeared at her mother’s home in answer to an advertisement for a roomer. He lived there until February 3, 1913, when the pair eloped and were married in St. Paul.” Frances’s mother said that they would “start divorce action against Mr. Augustine immediately.” The article never mentioned that Frances would have been five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

Frances and Frank were married and living at 2539 Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis at the time of Bill’s birth.

In the 1915 Minneapolis city directory, Mrs. Frances E Augustine boards at flat 2, 2539 Hennepin Avenue.

In the 1916 Minneapolis city directory, Mrs. Frances E Augustine resided at 2808 West 38th.

She was living in Osseo at the time of her son’s death. Her last residence was at 3110 Blaisdell in Minneapolis.

In the 1920 census, Bill is listed as the adopted son of 48 year-old Ada Marsh, a widow living with her two daughters, one granddaughter, Bill (age 4 and 8/12) and two female lodgers at 1619 Park Avenue. The two daughters are Frances Mincke, age 24, and Ruth Kirbach, age 21. Ada and Frances are shown as widows; Ruth is shown as married. Ruth is shown as having a daughter, less than a year old, also named Ada.

The older Ada was born in England; she and Frances emigrated in 1898 or 1899 and were naturalized in the first decade of the 1900s. Frances was born in Canada. Ruth was born in Minnesota. Little Ada's dad was born in Illinois as was Bill's father. Bill's mother is shown as born in Canada. Frances's occupation is shown as "practical nurse" in a "private home."

In the 1927 Minneapolis city directory, Frances Witzker was a bookkeeper for St Anthony Aerie No 1247.

In the 1930 census, Frances is living with her husband and her husband’s family at 4746 Elliot Avenue in Minneapolis.

In the 1940 census, she is Frances Witzker, age 43, either married or single (the census form says both) living with two other women at 623 East Franklin. She had had two years of high school. She was a demonstrator of rug-making equipment for a retail dry goods store. Jacqueline Witzker lived with the Fosses in Champlin Twp, Hennepin County.

In the 1950 census, she and Jackie live in apartment 22 at 1517 La Salle Avenue in Minneapolis. Frances works as a floor supervisor at a “five and dime store.” Frances is a widow.

She signed Maurice’s funerary book as Mrs. Frances Witzker.

In January of 1961, she was a senior regent of the Women of the Moose, Minneapolis chapter 390.

The informant for her death certificate was her former son-in-law, Robert E Ness of 5516 Knox Avenue S. Frances died suddenly of a stroke or heart attack at her home at 3110 Blaisdell Avenue S, #1705. Frances had high blood pressure and had previously had a stroke. Her occupation was shown as buyer, general merchandise.

Her obit said that she had been a buyer for Woolworth’s and was a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church and the Order of the Moose. Her obit said that she was survived by four grandchildren (Bill’s and Jackie’s children) but did not mention Dorothy.

    Buried:

    Notes:

In the 1900 census, he and Martha and their two boys lived on Lyndale Avenue North in Minneapolis. He had no occupation.

In the 1910 census, he and Martha and the boys still lived on Lyndale Avenue North in Minneapolis. Ernest had an automobile repair shop. Living with them were Arthur and Lydia Bonnin, “brother” and “sister” and a roomer named Louis Archer.

In the 1920 census, he and Martha lived in Morristown in Rice County. He had no occupation.

In the 1930 census, he and Bertha and his granddaughter Dorothy live on Lyndale Avenue North in Minneapolis. He has an automobile repair shop. His parents were born in Germany.

In the 1940 census, he and Bertha lived in Barclay Twp in Cass County in the same house in which they’d lived in 1935. He was a farmer. Both he and Bertha had an eighth- grade education.

The informant for the information in his death certificate was not named. Ernest was a farmer who lived in Pine River. He died from tetanus resulting from frostbite or frozen toes and hands.

    Birth:
This is the date in the 1900 census, Other sources say Apr 1864. His death certificate says 19 July 1869.

    Died:
    St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd

Ernest married Martha BONIN on 14 Dec 1892 in Morristown, Rice County, Minnesota. Martha was born in Jun 1872 in Minnesota; died on 19 Feb 1923 in Rice County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Martha BONIN was born in Jun 1872 in Minnesota; died on 19 Feb 1923 in Rice County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, she had had only the two children.

She is probably the Martha Minske who died in Rice County on 19 Feb 1923.

    Birth:
the date in the 1900 census

    Children:
    1. Laird Arthur MINSKE was born on 25 Oct 1893 in Waseca County, Minnesota; died in 1944.
    2. 6. Earl Ernest MINSKE was born on 2 Apr 1896 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; died on 23 Oct 1954 in Wisconsin.

  3. 14.  Charles Edgar CARR was born on 14 Mar 1854 in London, England (son of Charles Bishop CARR and Sarah Susannah PHILPOT); died on 9 Oct 1922 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1922-MN-005134

    Notes:

According to Mike, a Charles Edgar Carr, b. 1854, was arrested with his cousin Harriet for larceny and receiving stolen goods in 1882. He was also arrested in 1878 for forgery and again in 1883 for larceny in a dwelling. He got a five year sentence for the 1883 offense. When he was released, he married Eliza, who was already pregnant with their first daughter, and left for Canada at the end of 1888.

At the time of his marriage to Eliza Ada Burridge, he was a 32 year-old bachelor clerk living at 90 Blueton Road.

In the 1900 census (June 1st), the Charles E. Carr family was living at 1917 Hillside Avenue in Minneapolis in a house that he rented. The family consisted of Charles E. Carr, 46 (born Mar 1854), a stenographer, Ada E., 28 (born Jan 1872), Sarah A., 11 (born Dec 1888), May Marie, 9 (born June 1890), Charles, 7 (born October 1892), Frances, 4 (born June 1895), and Ruth L., 1 (born November 1898). Charles and Ada were both born in England and had been married for 12 years. Ada had borne 5 children, all still living. Charles had come to this country in 1888; no similar information is shown for Ada or the children. Sarah is shown as having been born in England. May Marie and Charles were born in English Canada, and Frances and Ruth in Minnesota.

In the 1905 state census, he was living alone on Clark Avenue in White Bear in Ramsey County. He was a contractor and builder. His three youngest children, Charles, 12, Francis, 9, and Ruth, 6, were living in Minneapolis with a large number of other young children in what must have been an orphanage at 3200 Stevens Avenue.

In the 1910 census, he and his son are living in Mason City, Iowa, as lodgers in the home of a private family. The older Charles, age 55, is an architect in the building trade and is shown to be married for the 2nd time although no wife is identifiable in the household. The younger Charles, age 18, is a house carpenter. Both came to the U.S. in 1891.

He is probably the Charles Carr who died in West Minneapolis in 1922. That will be assumed in the information included here. That Charles Carr was born in England in 1852. He was a draftsman and the informant for his death certificate, Albert Moore, was apparently unsure whether Charles was married or divorced. Charles died of senility and arteriosclerosis. His body was donated to the anatomy department of the university although there was a “personal” burial on October 17th. This older Charles is not in the 1920 census. It is possible that Charles was a patient at an asylum.

Charles married Eliza Ada BURRIDGE on 1 Apr 1888 in London, England. Eliza (daughter of William Frederick BURRIDGE) was born on 22 Jan 1871 in England; died on 25 Mar 1941 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 28 Mar 1941 in Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Eliza Ada BURRIDGE was born on 22 Jan 1871 in England (daughter of William Frederick BURRIDGE); died on 25 Mar 1941 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 28 Mar 1941 in Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1941-MN-019332

    Notes:

She is probably the Eliza Ann Burridge whose birth was registered in the July-Sep period of 1871 in the Pancras district of London, Middlesex.

At the time of her marriage to Charles Carr, she was a 20 year-old spinster living at 228 Millfield Road. (She was actually 17.)

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, she was Ada Carr, a nurse, age “over 21”, living with eight other people at 2735 Hennepin Avenue. She had been in the state for 9 years but had been at her present enumeration district for only a month. In that same census, her three youngest children, Charles, 12, Francis, 9, and Ruth, 6, were living in Minneapolis with a large number of other young children in what must have been an orphanage at 3200 Stevens Avenue. (It was the Stevens Avenue Home for Children and Aged Women.)

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, she is Mrs. Ada Carr, nurse, living at 904 E 18th Street.

In the 1910 census, Eliza A. Carr, now a 38 year-old widow (perhaps actually a divorcee), was living with all of her 5 children at 904 East 18th Street in Minneapolis in an apartment that she rented in a multi-family dwelling. Her occupation is shown as nurse, industry is illegible.

A notice in the want ad section of the Minneapolis Tribune’s 28 Apr 1910 edition says that she “will not be responsible for any debts that have been or may be contracted by Sarah, May or Charles Carr. Mrs. Ada Carr.”

In February of 1915, when Frances went missing for five days, Eliza lived at 3014 Chicago.

Frances's occupation is shown as "practical nurse" in a "private home." I can't make out the older Ada's occupation. Ruth is not shown as having an occupation.

In the 1930 census, William C. Marsh, 14, is living at 1619 Park Avenue South with his grandmother, Eliza A. Marsh, 57, a widow, his aunt (Eliza’s daughter), Ruth L. Anderson, 31, his aunt’s husband, Arthur J. Anderson, 36, his cousin, Ada R. Korbach, 11, and 3 “roomers”: Cecil J. Betz, Bruno A. Hanson, and Edna Hander or Harder. Eliza is the head of the household. She pays $55/month rent and the household has a radio. Eliza and her parents were born in England. Eliza was first married at age 17. Ruth was born in Minnesota and was first married at age 18. Arthur was born in Minnesota, his parents in Sweden, and was first married at age 34. William’s father was born in Illinois and his mother in Canada. Ada’s father was also born in Illinois and her mother (presumably Ruth) was born in Minnesota. Eliza appears to have come to the U.S. in 1895, is a naturalized citizen of the U.S., and is a superintendent of some sort of registry. Ruth is a beauty operator in a beauty shop. Arthur is a dentist and appears to be a veteran of the World War.

In the 1934 Minneapolis city directory, she is Ada E Marsh, widow of Geo, superintendent, Nurses Aid & Bureau, residing at 3539 Dupont Ave N.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, she is E Ada Marsh, widow of Geo, nurse for A G Anderson, and residing at 3539 Dupont Ave N.

In the 1937 city directory, she is E Ada Marsh, widow of Geo E, residing at 2114 Russell Ave N.

In the 1938 city directory, she is Eliza A Marsh, widow of Geo, residing at 2114 Russell Ave N.

In the 1939 city directory, she is Eliza A Marsh, wifow of Geo, residing at 4308 34th Ave S.

In the 1940 city directory, she is Ada E Marsh, widow of Geo, residing at 2642 Colfax Ave S.

In the 1940 census, as Liza Ada March, she is a 69 year-old widow, a nurse but no longer employed, living at 2642 Colfax Avenue in south Minneapolis. She had had four years of college.

She is not listed in the 1941 city directory.

She died at the home of her daughter Ruth who lived at 4308 34th Avenue S in Minneapolis and was the informant for Eliza’s death certificate. The death certificate said that Eliza’s usual residence was 2642 Colfax Avenue S. Eliza was a retired nurse and was the widow of George Ernest Marsh.
