  1. 2.  Oscar Theodore THOMPSON was born on 20 Jul 1889 in Kaukauna, Outagamie County, Wisconsin (son of Helge (Harry E) THOMPSON and Marian HOUGEN); died on 26 Oct 1947 in Wisconsin; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.

    Notes:

Oscar registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Kaukauna. He was single and was a salesman for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in central Wisconsin. Oscar was described as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. He had “defective eyes.”

In the 1920 census, he is probably the Oscar T Thompson living with his wife Veneta in Milwaukee. Although that Oscar’s father was said to be born in Wisconsin and his mother in Norway, the census-taker most likely got things turned around because the Milwaukee Oscar’s occupation, salesman of rubber goods, is the same as our Oscar had in the 1917 draft registration.

In the 1930 census, Oscar is back in Neenah. (He is indexed as Oren T Thompson with wife Weneta.) Oscar is now doing well. He is a staff superintendent in a paper mill, lives in a house that he owns and that is worth $8000 (338 East Columbia Avenue), and employs a 26 year-old live-in servant named Hazel Belling. Veneta’s mother, Mae Beck, a 62 year-old widow, also lives with them. Oscar was not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, he and Veneta and Dorothy live in Neenah. Oscar is staff superintendent at a paper mill. They live in the same house, 338 East Columbia Avenue, in which they all lived five years earlier. Included in their household is Una Beck, a 40 year-old divorcee who had lived in Milwaukee in 1935. She is called “sister-in-law” and is an unemployed public school teacher. Oscar is a college graduate, Veneta and Una have two years of college.

In his World War II draft registration, he was employed by Kimberly Clark of Neenah.

    Notes:

She was the daughter of Charles and Mary Beck of Wausau. The parents of Charles and Mary were born in Germany. In the 1910 census, Veneta is 16 years old and has an 11 year-old sister named Una. In the 1920 census, Charles, Mary, and Una live in Milwaukee. Veneta is not living with them.

According to her entry in the Connecticut death index, she was the widow of Oscar and had been a teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools. She resided in Darien at 18 Pilgrim Road, the home of her daughter. According to the SSDI, her SS# had been issued in Massachusetts in 1962.

    Notes:

Jim has Helge as #6825. According to Jim, Helge was a businessman in the U.S. and married a Marianne Hougen (b. 1859, d. 1956, m. 27 Jun 1888) and died 30 Dec 1942 in Manitowoc County or in Kaukauna.

In the 1930 census, he is Harry E. Thompson, 74, with wife Marianne, 71, who lived in Kaukauna. Living with them is their 31 year-old daughter, Marcella, who is a high school teacher. Harry is apparently retired because he has no occupation. In the 1920 census, he, Marion, and Marcella live in Kaukauna. Harry came to the U.S. in 1869. He is the proprietor of a shoe store. In the 1910 census we learn that they also have a son Oscar, 20, and that Oscar and Marcella are the only two children that “May” has had. Harry is a merchant with a shoe store and Oscar is an “apprentice merchant.” In the 1900 census we learn that Harry came to the U.S. in 1870.

In the 1940 census, Harry, Marianne, and Marcella live at 114 West 9th Street in Kaukauna. That is the same house that all three of them had lived in five years earlier. Harry, 84, has no occupation. Marcella, 42, is a school teacher.

In the 1880 census, he was 24 year-old Harry Thompson living with, and working in the shoe shop of, Knut K Strande and his family of Cato, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.

In the 1910 Kaukauna city directory, Harry E Thompson’s occupation is “full line shoes” on 2nd. He and Marion reside on 9th.

In the 1936 Kaukauna city directory, Harry E Thompson and wife Marion reside at 114 W 9th.

There is a biographical sketch of Harry in the History of Outagamie County, p. 783, published in 1911:

HARRY E. THOMPSON, a well-known and successful shoe merchant of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, who is the proprietor of the oldest establishment in this line on the south side, has been intimately connected with civic affairs in Kaukauna during the past few years. Mr. Thompson was born in Norway, February 1, 1856, and came to the United States in 1871 with an uncle, on whose farm in Manitowoc county, Wisconsin, he worked during the summer months, while attending school during the winter time. In 1873 he went to Cato, Wisconsin, to learn the trade of shoemaker, and later was located at Alexandria, Minnesota, and Bismarck, North Dakota. After one year at the latter place he returned to Cato, from whence after a short period he came to Kaukauna and opened a shoe store, in 1884, in the Mills Block. In 1897, his increased trade demanding more space, he came to his present location, where he has a modern establishment, equipped with every convenience and facility known to the shoe trade. Mr. Thompson is possessed of much business ability, and his business has demanded much of his attention, but he has still found time to devote to public matters, and has served very acceptably as alderman and poor commissioner, and is now acting in the capacities of water commissioner and school treasurer. His fraternal connections are with the Modern Woodmen of America and the Masons. Mr. Thompson was married June 27, 1888, to Marion Haugen, of Valders, Wisconsin, and two children have been born to this union: Oscar T., who is a student at the University of Wisconsin, at Madison; and Marcella, aged fourteen, attending the public schools. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson are members of the Lutheran faith, but are attending the Congregational Church at Kaukauna.
