    He graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1980, attended Alexandria Technical Institute. He had been a diesel mechanic in Billings before moving to the St. Cloud area in 1985. At the time of his death, he was employed by St. Cloud Trucking and Sales. He lived in Sauk Rapids, his wife and daughters in Brandon, Minnesota.

    An article in the Star Tribune said that he was of Sauk Rapids and was fatally injured late Saturday night or early Sunday when his motorcycle went into a ditch along County Road 38 outside Urbank, Minnesota.

    Arthur Stanley Peterson

    Arthur Stanley Peterson, age 72, of rural Battle Lake, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer Monday evening, February 18, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. He was born on April 9, 1929 in rural Vining to Sankey and Alma (Floen) Peterson. He was baptized in Vining and confirmed in the Grue Lutheran Church of rural Ashby. He attended rural School Districts 67 and 1 in Otter Tail County and then continued his education at the Battle Lake Public School until he started farming with his father. In 1955 he entered the U.S. Army, serving two years, and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge he enrolled at the Wahpeton Science School where he studied plumbing. On March 10, 1962, he married Karen M. Stangvik at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. He was employed with Dieseth Construction and then drove milk truck for Harold Miller Trucking. After this, Art and Karen started dairy farming and later grain farmed, and during the summer months he would work road construction with Karold Evavold Construction and Eagle (Jake Henneman) Construction. He enjoyed work, visiting, and was a family man who especially enjoyed his granddaughters. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and had served on the Church Board. He had also served several years on the Battle Lake Creamery Board and the Clitherall Township Board. He is survived by his wife, Karen; one daughter, Kari (Mark) Miller and granddaughter, Deidre of Battle Lake; one daughter-in-law, Lori Peterson and granddaughter, Samantha of Brandon and granddaughter, Crystal Peterson of Alexandria; five sisters, Corinne (Arthur) Wentzel of Fergus Falls, Francis (Armond) Grage of Fridley, Lucille Eckhardt of Erhard, Marjorie (Virgil) Smith of Dent, and Arlene Carlson of Plymouth; one sister-in-law, Marcella Peterson of Fergus Falls; and by a very special person in Art’s life, Kurt Maethner of Battle Lake. He was preceded in death by one son, Todd in 1988; parents, Sankey and Alma; one brother, Milton; one sister, Alice, and two brothers-in-law, George Eckhardt and Lowell Carlson.

    Visitation: Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nilson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

    Karen Marie Peterson was born on July 4, 1940 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota the daughter of Marvel and Mabel (Olson) Stangvik. Karen passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the age of 69, at the Lakeland Hospice House.  She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls and graduated from the Fergus Falls High School in 1958.  

    Karen and Arthur S. Peterson were married on March 10, 1962 at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake, Minnesota where she remained a member.   After their marriage they lived in Moorhead. In 1969 they moved to their farm in Clitherall Township in rural Battle Lake.   Art and Karen dairy farmed, grain farmed, and raised beef cattle.   She enjoyed every aspect of farming with Art.  Karen liked the outdoors, doing yard work and took great pride in her home.   She loved baking, cooking and was also an avid reader. She also enjoyed doodling, puzzles, and playing games with her grandchildren. Karen also very much enjoyed shopping with her daughter and granddaughter. Karen also took great pride in watching her granddaughters Deidre, Crystal, and Samantha grow up to be such wonderful young women that they are today. She also enjoyed the time that she got to spend getting to know and love her great-granddaughter Danica. They have and will always enjoy the great memories that they had with their Gram. 

    She is survived by one daughter, Kari (Mark) Miller of Battle Lake; three granddaughters, Deidre Miller of Battle Lake, Crystal Peterson of Wheaton and Samantha Peterson of Fargo; one great-granddaughter, Danica Peterson of Wheaton; one brother, Steven (Clydene) Stangvik of Fergus Falls; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Eckhardt of Fergus Falls, Marge (Virgil) Smith of Dent and Arlene Carlson of Plymouth and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

    Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Art on February 18, 2002; son, Todd on June 19, 1988; parents, Marvel and Mabel Stangvik; father and mother-in-law, Sankey and Alma Peterson; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Corinne and Art Wentzel and Frances and Armond Grage; one brother-in-law and his wife, Milton and Marcie Peterson.

    A special thanks to Lakeland Hospice of Fergus Falls for the warm and loving care that Karen received over the past several months. All the staff were so kind and compassionate to Karen and were very special to Karen. They will always have a place in the hearts of her family.

    In the 1941/42 Fergus Falls city directory, he and Mabel lived at 407 Bancroft Avenue West. He was a fireman for Otter Tail Power Co.

    Marvil C. Stangvik, 95, Fergus Falls, died Friday, April 9, 2004, in Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls.

    Mr. Stangvik was born June 9, 1908, in Dalton, Minn., where he grew up. On April 10, 1937, he married Mabel Amanda Olson in South Dakota. They lived in Fergus Falls, where he worked for Otter Tail Power Co. and became superintendent of the Hoot Lake plant, retiring in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

    He is survived by two sons, Steven (Clydene), Fergus Falls, Philip, Faribault, Minn.; a daughter, Karen Peterson, Battle Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

    Mabel Stangvik Mabel Stangvik, 92, of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born on March 3, 1909, in Otter Tail County, the daughter of Gustav and Petrina (Hanson) Olson. She grew up in Sverdrup Township, attending the Barnhard School. The family moved to Fergus Falls when she was a child. She later worked for the Liberty Garment Factory. On April 10, 1937, she married Marvil Clenny Stangvik in Sisseton, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Fergus Falls. For most of her life she was a homemaker and will be remembered for her excellent cooking, baking, sewing, and her beautiful flower gardens. Mabel cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. In addition she enjoyed her canaries, and wonderful collection of birds. She had also assisted as a lunch room server at Eisenhower School in Fergus Falls. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its ladies aide in Fergus Falls. She was also a member of the "My Night Out Club." Preceding her in death were her son-in-law, Arthur S. Peterson, grandson, Todd Peterson; three brothers, John, Julius and Palmer; and half-brother, Olaf Krogh. Survivors include her husband Marvil Stangvik of Fergus Falls; two sons, Philip Stangvik of Faribault, and Steven (Clydene) Stangvik of Fergus Falls; and daughter, Karen Peterson of Battle Lake; grandchildren, Kari (Mark) Miller of Battle Lake, Sean (Kimberly) Stangvik of Fergus Falls, Jodi Stangvik of Fargo, N.D., and Jennifer Stangvik of Fergus Falls; great-grandchildren, Deidre Miller, Crystal and Samantha Peterson, Steven and Shane Stangvik, and Paige Stangvik; and three sisters, Agnes Anderson and Helen Miller, both of Fergus Falls; and Olga Hagen of Winton, Calif.     It is sad that this obituary omits mention of Mabel’s two murdered grandchildren and her murdered daughter-in-law.

    “M. O. Stangvik” was one of the signatories to the petition for incorporation of the Village of Dalton that was signed on January 23, 1905, and presented to the county commissioners on March 21, 1905.

    He operated a restaurant in Dalton at the time of the 1905 state census. According to that census, he had been in the state for 12 years and 1 month. His wife had been in the state for 28 years and 4 months. The family had been in that enumeration district for 2 years and 5 months.

    He was a butcher in a meat market in the 1910 census. At that time he was living in Dalton.

    He was a section laborer for the Great Northern Railroad and living in Dalton, Minnesota, when he registered for the draft in Fergus Falls on April 12, 1918. He was married to Christine at that time. He was described as tall and stout with blue eyes and dark hair.

    He was still a section laborer for the railroad in the 1930 census. He and Christine and Marvil lived in Fergus Falls.

    In the 1935/36 Fergus Falls city directory, he was a laborer for the Great Northern Railway. He and Christine lived at 501 Concord Street. Same in the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory. Same in the 1941/42 Fergus Falls city directory
