In the 1880 census, he is Charles Fortier, 26, living in the town of Perinton, Monroe County, New York. Charles’s occupation is engineer. His wife Mary is also 26 and they have four children: John J, 6, Julia A, 5, Charles, 3, andd Allen, 2.

In the 1900 census, he is Charles S Fortier, 46, living in Plainfield Twp, Kent County, Michigan, with his second wife and his children Joseph (b. 1878), Dorah, and Willie.

In the 1910 census, he is Charles S Fortier, 55, living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the 1910 census. Ann Fortier, 73, “mother”, was living with him and his wife Sarah. Charles was a stationary engineer. Sarah was his second wife. She and Charles had been married for 17 years. She had had three children, none still living.

The Michigan record for his marriage to Sarah shows his birth place as Brighton, Canada. The 1900 census shows his birth date as March 1854.

Notes:

In the 1860 U.S. census, John was a cooper. He lived with his wife and children in Greece, Monroe County, New York.

In the 1870 census, he is the 43 year-old John Fortier, a cart-man, living in Perinton, Monroe County, New York.

In the 1880 census, he is the 53 year-old John Fortier living in Perinton, Monroe County, New York. John is a watchman for what looks like “salination works” (probably sanitation works). His wife is Ann, 46. Both were born in “P. Ontario.” John’s father was born in France and his mother in England. Ann’s father was born in Connecticut and her mother in “P. Ontario.”

John married Ann SHERWOOD. Ann was born about 1835 in Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

In the 1880 census she is 46 and was born in “P. Ontario.” Her father was born in Connecticut and her mother in “P. Ontario.”

She was living with her son Henry in Minneapolis at the time of Minnesota’s 1905 state census. She had been in Minneapolis for 6 months and was shown as 72 years old.

She is living with her son, Charles Fortier, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the 1910 census.
