    The Rev. Cecil M. Johnson, 87, Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in the nursing home.

    Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 24, 1918, in Minot, N.D., where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1935. In 1940, he earned an education degree from Minot State University. From 1940 to 1941, he taught high school in Zahl, N.D. From 1941 to 1943, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft, Los Angeles. On Dec. 24, 1941, he married Eleanor Granstrom in Appam, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from Luther Seminary, St. Paul. From 1949 to 1956, he served at a four-point parish in Starkweather, N.D. He then served at a two-point parish in Pelican Rapids, Minn., until 1969. He received an honorary doctorate from Concordia College in 1969. From 1969 to 1981, he served as district president (bishop) of the northern Minnesota district of the American Lutheran Church. He worked for Oak Grove (Minn.) Lutheran High School from 1981 until his retirement in 1983. She died in 2004.

    He is survived by a son, The Rev. Timothy (Susan), Anoka, Minn.; two daughters, Kathryn Benson, Moorhead, Sita (Norman) Johnson, Richfield, Minn.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

    Visitation: Monday from 5 to 7 in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, and Tuesday from 10 to 11 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.

    In the 1905 Fergus Falls directory, she was Miss Hilga L and was employed at the State Hospital.

    A 21 year-old Gust Johnson, both parents born in Norway, was listed as a nurse at the state hospital in the 1905 state census.

    Cecil Johnson of Pelican Rapids was the informant for his death certificate. Gustaf was a car man for the Great Northern Railway. Gustaf was a widower and his usual residence was 1006 Sheridan Street in Fergus Falls. He died of uremia and kidney failure.

    In the 1910 census, he and Helga live in Devils Lake, North Dakota. The couple had been married for 2 years and had had no children. Gust was a tin smith in the “shops.” According to the birth record for Alice, he was a coppersmith.

    In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he and his wife and son lived in Minot, North Dakota. Gust was an air man for the steam railroad.

    His obit noted that he was a carman for the Great Northern Railway for 41 years, and a member of the railroad carmens and pensioners association.

    In the 1900 census he is Charles H. Johnson, 48 (b. Dec 1851), living with his wife and family at 323 Bismark Avenue in Fergus Falls. He was a butcher. He had come to the U.S. in 1872.

    In the 1902 Fergus Falls city directory, he, as Charles H Johnson, works for his brother and, with wife Mary, resides at 323 Bismarck Avenue E.

    In the 1905 state census he is Charles S. Johnson, 53, a laborer living at 323 Bismark Avenue East with his wife and family. The family consists of Mrs. Mattie, 42, Constance, 13, Julia L, 11, and Ruth 4. Charles S. had been in Minnesota for 25 years and in this enumeration district for 14.

    Charles Johnson, 58, is still living in Fergus Falls with his wife and family in the 1910 census. That Charles married his wife in about 1881 and came to this country in 1872. The children at home were four daughters: Constance, 17, Judith, 15, Gyda, 12, and Ruth, 9.

    He died from chronic nephritis. The informant for his death certificate was his daughter Constance Johnson. His residence at death was 323 Bismark in Fergus Falls.

    In the 1900 census she had had 9 children, 6 still living. She came to the U.S. in 1880. In the 1910 census, as Marie, she had had 12 children, 6 still living. She had come to the U.S. in 1863.

    In the 1920 census, she is probably the Marie Johnson living with her daughter Judy and some woman named Ella at 323 somewhere (probably Washington Avenue, see below) in Fergus Falls. Judy is a clerk in a dry goods store.

    In the 1930 census, she and her daughter Judith L. and granddaughter Edith are living in Fergus Falls at 323 Washington Avenue.

    In the 1935/36 Fergus Falls city directory, she is listed as Mrs. Mary C. Johnson, died July 5, 1935, age 74.

    The informant for her death certificate was Mrs. Elias Pederson who was probably her daughter Judith. Mary’s residence at the time of her death was 323 Washington Avenue. Mary died of uterine cancer.

    In the 1865 Norwegian census he was Henrik Henriksen, 16, living with his mother, step-father, and half-brother on the Storøen farm in Vinne, Verdalens. His mother was Marit Andersdatter, 53, his step-father was Peder Hanssen, 63, and his half-brother was Carl Peter Pedersen, 9.

    He was confirmed as Henrik Bÿvald on 7 October 1866. His place of birth was Valstadvald.

    He left Trondheim on 2 Jun 1870, bound for Black River Falls. He arrived in New York aboard the Sidonian on June 24, 1870.

    In the 1880 census, he is a farmer in Dane Prairie Twp, Otter Tail County. With him is his wife Lina C., 22, and their daughters Matilde Cicilie, 4, and Marie Christine, 1. Also living with them on the farm is his mother-in-law Marta, 58, his brothers-in-law Ove Hansen, 26, and Christian Siverson, 19.

    In the 1900 census he was a farmer living between Carl Bye (b. Oct 1859 in Norway) and Ole O. Bye (b. Jan 1839 in Norway) in Sherman Twp, Sargent County, North Dakota. Both Henry and Lina came to the U.S. in 1870 and have been married for 28 years.

    In the 1903 and 1905 Fergus Falls city directories, he was Henry H Bye of the business Jackson & Bye. He and Lena lived at 702 Cascade Street S.

    Henry Bye and his family were living on Cascade Street in Fergus Falls in the 1905 state census. The household consisted of Henry, 55, Mrs. Lena, 48, Helga, 23, Arthur, 21, Nettie, 17, Cecil, 8, and Charles, 48, born in Norway. Arthur, Nettie, and Cecil had been born in “Dakotah” and Helga had been born in Minnesota. Henry was a merchant.

    In the 1907 Fergus Falls directory, he and Lena are still at 702 Cascade but Henry is no longer associated with Jackson & Bye and is now working as a carpenter.

    In the 1909 directory, he is a carpenter for John Lauritzen. He and Lena reside at 212 Alcott Avenue E.

    He was at one time an officer of the Park Region Mutual Telephone Company incorporated on March 10, 1906, with switchboards in Underwood and Dalton.

    In the 1910 census he was a carpenter living with his wife, son, and granddaughter in Trondhjem Twp, Otter Tail County.

    In the 1920 census he was a carpenter living with his wife Lina and son Cecil (b. North Dakota) in the Village of Dalton. He came to the U.S. in 1870 and his wife in 1869.

    He was the informant for his brother Stephen’s death certificate.

    He was a 76 year-old widower lodging in Fergus Falls in the 1930 census. He had no occupation and came to the U.S. in 1870.

    In the 1931 Fergus Falls city directory, he boarded at 116 Bancroft Ave E.

    According to his death certificate, his father was Henry Bye, his mother was Marit Sivertson. When he died he was a widower. His occupation had been carpenter. He died of pneumonia. He lived at 116 Bancroft in Fergus Falls.

    Her death certificate identifies her father as Severson. Her mother’s name was unknown to her son Arthur who was the informant. She died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

    In a 1912 land ownership map, Lena H Bye owned about 180 acres in the northeast quarter of Section 24 of Tumuli Twp in Otter Tail County. That parcel is still ascribed to her (Lena H Bye) in the 1934 Fergus Falls rural directory. The particulars were 156.61 acres in section 24 of the Tumuli township.
